Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the embodiment of cultural values in English textbooks for junior high school students. This research used a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The research data was in the form of a collection of discourse texts in the form of monologues, dialogues and exercises. The data were taken from two books entitled Scaffolding and In Focus, published by the Book Center of the Ministry of National Education. It is grade X. The data analysis procedure used in this research was qualitative content analysis. The process of validity was done through credibility, transferability, triangulation, dependability, and confirmability. The results showed that the dominant cultural value was the optimistic value of 43%. Then followed by the brotherhood value of 23.80%, the social value of 19% and the freedom value of 14%. Each cultural value found also describes some more specific values. The value of freedom contains character values, namely the value of independence and hard work. The value of brotherhood contains character values, namely friendliness and responsible; the optimistic value contains character values, namely courage, creativity, discipline, and curiosity, and social values contain character values, namely cooperation. This study concluded that English textbooks had the important value of increasing students’ character as cultural values.

Abstract

Guru diberikan kewajiban untuk menulis sebuah karya ilmiah sebagai salah satu syarat untuk kenaikan pangkat pada jenjang tertentu. Oleh karena itu, seorang guru harus dapat mendorong dirinya untuk selalu menulis, terutama menuliskan segala sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan bidang pendidikan pada satuan pendidikan tempat dia bekerja. Namun, guru-guru Bahasa Inggris di Kota Lubuk Linggau masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menulis artikel. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan sebuah pelatihan khusus menulis artikel untuk jurnal nasional agar guru dapat menghasilkan karya. Pelatihan yang diadakan berupa workhosp. Dari kegiatan tersebut, sebanyak 90% peserta merasa senang dengan kegiatan ini dan kegiatan ini memberikan banyak manfaat. Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Artikel, Jurnal Nasional

Abstract

Salah satu kendala dalam pengembangan profesinalisme guru saat ini adalah terkait dengan penulisan dan pelaksanaan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Penelitian PTK ini dapat dilaksanakan dengan terlebih dahulu merancang proposal yang berisi semua hal yang perlu dilakukan untuk melakukan penelitian tersebut. Agar guru dapat menulis proposal PTK, diperlukan suatu kegiatan sosialisasi membekali mereka dengan pengetahuan mengenai penulisan proposal PTK. Kegiatan pengabdian ini diharapkan mampu menjadi solusi untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan guru bahasa Inggris tentang cara menulis proposal PTK serta meningkatkan kesadaran guru akan pentingnya PTK dalam pengembangan karier sebagai guru.  Kegiatan pengabdian ini diikuti oleh 31 orang guru Bahasa Inggris di Tingkat SMP dan SMA di Kota Lahat Sumatera Selatan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode pelatihan yang dilakukan melalui tahapan 1) persiapan peserta dan perlengkapan kegiatan pengabdian, 2) pemaparan materi dan diskusi grup melalui Zoom Cloud Meeting, 3) Diskusi lanjutan melalui Grup WhatApps, dan 4) evaluasi kegiatan melalui pre-test dan post-test. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan guru tentang PTK mengalami peningkatan dari nilai rata-rata 8,322 pada pre-test menjadi 12,032 pada post-test. Selain itu guru-guru juga telah mampu merancang kerangka proposal PTK dan diharapkan kegiatan ini dilanjutkan dengan kegiatan seperti pembimbingan penulisan proposal dan pelaksanaan penelitian berdasarkan proposal yang dirancang.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui Peningkatan KBI bidang Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia bagi Civitas Akademika IAIN Curup. Sasaran kegiatan ini, yakni mahasiswa Prodi Tadris Bahasa Indonesia, Fakultas Tarbiyah, Institut Agama Islam Negeri Curup. Tujuan khusus PkM untuk mengetahui perubahan Sikap (mindset), Pengetahuan, dan Keterampilan dalam menggunakan Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia (EBI). Kegiatan PkM kerjasama Prodi S3 LT UNIB dengan Tim Penyelenggara Prodi Tadris Bahasa Indonesia IAIN Curup, dilaksanakan Senin, 22 September 2025, Pukul 09.00—12.00 WIB., di Aula Dekanat Fak Tarbiyah IAIN Curup dengan peserta sebanyak 50 orang. Kegiatan dengan metode pelatihan melalui ceramah, tanya jawab, dan diskusi terpimpin. Narasumber mempresentasikan materi pedoman umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia dengan memberikan latihan praktik penggunaan EBI melalui tahapan teknis; pretes, pemberian pemahaman materi, dan postes. Hasil kegiatan PkM dapat dikemukakan bahwa telah terjadi Peningkatan KBI bidang EBI mahasiswa Prodi Tadris bahasa Indonesia IAIN Curup. Khususnya, sesuai sasaran telah terjadi perubahan pola pikir (mindset), pengetahuan, dan keterampilan dalam menggunakan Ejaan bahasa Indonesia secara tertulis. Hal ini terlihat dari perubahan (1) pola pikir mahasiswa dalam menulis kalimat dan teks pendek telah memperhatikan kaidah Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia secara benar, (2) penguasaan pengetahuan dan kemahiran berbahasa Indonesia dalam menerapkan unsur pemakaian huruf, penulisan kata, pemakaian tanda baca, dan penulisan unsur serapan sudah sesuai ketentuan, yakni terjadi peningkatan dari hasil pretes kategori cukup (rerata 69,75) meningkat pada hasil postes berkategori tinggi (rerata 80,5), dan (3) aktivitas mahasiswa Prodi Tadris bahasa Indonesia dalam mengikuti pelatihan menjadi lebih antusias dan bersemangat. Hal ini juga ditunjang dengan bukti relevan hasil jawaban pertanyaan kebermanfaatan menyatakan, bahwa pelatihan Peningkatan KBI bidang EBI ini bermanfaat dalam membuka kembali wawasan kaidah bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

The increasing complexity and volume of medical record documentation demand students to read efficiently and accurately. However, conventional learning approaches often do not adequately support the development of effective reading strategies aligned with professional needs. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating speed reading strategies within the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model to improve reading speed among medical record students. This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 60 second-year medical record students at STIKES Sapta Bakti Bengkulu. The intervention was conducted over six weeks by embedding speed reading techniques into the stages of the PBL learning process. Students’ reading performance was assessed using pre-test and post-test measurements of reading speed. The data were analyzed using comparative statistical analysis to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading speed after the implementation of PBL-based speed reading activities. The average reading speed increased from 150 words per minute (wpm) in the pre-test to 250 wpm in the post-test, with the difference being statistically significant (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the integration of speed reading strategies within a problem-based learning environment effectively enhances students’ ability to process medical record texts more efficiently. In conclusion, integrating speed reading strategies into the Problem-Based Learning model is effective in improving reading speed among medical record students. This approach provides a relevant instructional strategy that supports the cognitive demands of medical record analysis and contributes to the development of effective learning practices in medical record education.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the most frequently used method in teaching English grammar at the senior high schools of Mukomuko regency and to reveal the reasons of using the most frequently used method. An explanatory mixed method design was carried out to collect and analyze the data quantitatively and qualitatively. Three instruments were used; Questionnaire, interview, and classroom observational checklist. Thirty-one English teachers filled out the questionnaire, four teachers were selected to be interviewed, and two of them were observed. The results of this study showed; first, Situational Language Teaching was the most frequently used method in teaching English grammar at the senior high schools of Mukomuko regency. Second, the English teachers implemented the most frequently used method for four reasons; 1) to encourage the students` motivation in learning the English language, 2) to facilitate the students to achieve the learningÔÇÖs objective, 3) to teach English grammar to the students contextually, and 4) to evaluate the students` understanding about the material given. Based on the results, it seemed that the English teachers picked the method of teaching grammar based on its simplicity and effectiveness to activate the EFL teaching and learning process. Moreover, the result provides teachers more insight and reference regarding to the method in teaching English grammar and applied it into their teaching process

Abstract

While TikTok has been increasingly explored in education, its role as a central pedagogical artefact in Project-Based Learning (PjBL) for tertiary EFL speaking development remains underexamined. This study investigates how TikTok storytelling projects and reflective writing facilitate students’ speaking skills.A qualitative case study was conducted with 14 tertiary EFL students in Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, student-produced TikTok videos, reflective writings, and instructional documents. Analysis employed Brown’s speaking descriptors to identify patterns in students’ speaking performance and development.The integration of TikTok as a project artefact promoted iterative speaking practice, peer rehearsal, and continuous reflection. Rather than uniform improvement, students exhibited varied speaking development, including enhanced inquiry, collaboration, and reduced speaking anxiety. The reflective phase was particularly significant, enabling students to recognize their communicative abilities and address psychological barriers to speaking.The findings highlight the pedagogical value of combining social media platforms with PjBL to create authentic, engaging, and low-anxiety learning environments. Reflection played a crucial role in consolidating learning and fostering self-awareness in language use.TikTok-mediated PjBL offers a promising approach to supporting tertiary EFL speaking development by integrating creativity, collaboration, and reflective practice. This study contributes a conceptually grounded framework for technology-enhanced language learning and suggests the need for further research on scalable and context-sensitive implementations.

Abstract

Pembelajaran abad ke-21 menuntut guru mampu merancang pengalaman belajar yang bermakna, sadar, dan menyenangkan agar kompetensi berpikir kritis, kreativitas, kolaborasi, dan komunikasi dapat berkembang secara optimal. Di Kota Bengkulu, banyak guru Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Menengah Pertama belum mempraktikkan pendekatan pembelajaran mendalam secara sistematis, sehingga diperlukan penguatan kompetensi melalui program peningkatan kapasitas yang terarah. Penelitian pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi pedagogik guru dalam menerapkan pendekatan pembelajaran mendalam pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan semangat kurikulum nasional. Kegiatan dilaksanakan melalui pelatihan tatap muka yang mencakup tahap persiapan, penyampaian materi, contoh penerapan di kelas, diskusi, serta evaluasi menggunakan instrumen pre-test dan post-test disertai refleksi terstruktur terhadap rencana implementasi di sekolah. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman konsep yang konsisten pada sebagian besar indikator, penguatan kemampuan merancang pembelajaran yang relevan dengan pengalaman peserta didik, serta komitmen peserta untuk menerapkan rancangan, media, dan aktivitas berbasis pengalaman nyata di kelas. Temuan kualitatif menegaskan perubahan perspektif guru ke arah peran fasilitator yang menumbuhkan keterlibatan dan refleksi belajar peserta didik. Disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan yang efektif memperluas wawasan pedagogik dan keterampilan aplikatif guru, serta direkomendasikan keberlanjutan melalui pendampingan di sekolah dan penguatan integrasi teknologi pembelajaran agar penerapannya menjadi konsisten dan berdampak luas.

Abstract

Video recording is used as a reflective tool to support students’ speaking development, yet limited research has examined how parents interpret these recordings and how their perceptions relate to students’ actual progress. This study investigated how video recordings serve as reflective feedback that connects parental perceptions with students’ speaking improvement. A mixedmethods design was employed involving 30 elementary-level EFL students and their parents. Students completed monthly video-based speaking tasks, while parents observed the recordings at home and provided reflective feedback. Data were collected through a perception questionnaire, pretest–post-test speaking assessments, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and Spearman’s rho correlation, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Findings indicated that parents held positive perceptions of video recordings as a tool for monitoring progress and supporting learning. Students’ speaking performance improved significantly from pretest to posttest (t = –12.138, p < 0.001), particularly in fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, accuracy, and confidence. Parents also reported clearer progress observations and increased motivation at home. However, the correlation between parental perceptions and students’ speaking scores was weak and non-significant (ρ = -0.050, p = 0.791), suggesting that improvement was driven more by learning activities, especially repeated video reflection, than by parental attitudes alone. Overall, video recordings effectively enhance speaking performance and provide parents with valuable insight into their children’s development, even though parental perceptions did not directly predict learning outcomes.

Abstract

This meta-analysis aimed to assess the overall effectiveness of Gen-AI-based interventions on learners’ English outcomes and to explore potential variations across educational contexts, broad language domains, and specific language domains. A total of 34 independent studies involving 2,579 participants were collected from three academic databases. The pooled estimate analysis revealed a statistically significant effect of Gen-AI on English learning outcomes. However, considerable variations were found across the included studies. This suggested that the effect varied depending on contextual and instructional variables. Further moderator analyses showed that Gen-AI was more consistently effective at the tertiary level and for productive skills, specifically writing skills. In contrast, evidence for other language learning domains and educational contexts remained inconclusive due to the limited number of available studies. Thus, future experimental studies are still needed, particularly to examine Gen-AI’s effects in underexplored areas. Finally, the findings suggest that ELT practitioners can use Gen-AI to support English teaching and augment learners’ outcomes. This meta-analysis offers evidence-based insights for policymakers to produce proper guidelines on Gen-AI use in ELT contexts.
