Abstract

Interactive metadiscourse markers in the discussion section of a journal play a crucial role in engaging the reader and facilitating a more dynamic interaction. In a discussion journal section, interactive metadiscourse markers may include phrases or expressions that invite the reader to consider alternative viewpoints, respond to the presented ideas, or reflect on the implications of the research findings. This research investigated interactive metadiscourse markers in research article discussion of language teaching within 30 articles published in local, national, and international journals. A mixed-methods approach was adopted and the instrument used in this research was a checklist designed to analyze interactive metadiscourse. The result of the inter-rater agreement of the co-rater and researcher indicated a kappa value of  90.2% (co-rater and researcher respectively) because it shows excellent agreement (above 80%). It shows that the highest frequency used of interactive metadiscourse category is transitions markers in the three-level journals. Evidential markers took the second position in frequency used followed by code glossed in third frequency. Endophoric markers and frame markers are less used by the writers in the article discussions. The research articles published in international reputable journals show the highest number of using interactive metadiscourse devices than the articles published in local and national journals.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) refer to the more advanced mental processes outlined in Anderson and Krathwohl's updated version of Bloom's taxonomy (2021), comprising analysis, evaluation, and creation.". This research aimed to investigate the composition of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) in language tasks and knowledge of the English textbook on titled “Pathway” To English For SMA/MA Grade X and to explain the dominant cognitive dimension used in this textbook. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research is classified as a content analysis. A table checklist based on the cognitive domain of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy was the instrument of this research. The findings of the research indicate that for language skills, this book is more concerned with HOT than LOTS with the percentage of HOTS at 58,34% and LOTS at 41,66%.  The result showed The most dominant level of thinking skill of language skill in this book is analyze (C4), followed by apply (C3), remember (C1), create (C6), evaluate (C5), and understand (C2).  For knowledge, it can be concluded that the composition of the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) presented in the instruction question on the English Textbook is not lower than the Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) with the percentage of HOTS at 20,83% and LOTS at 79,17%. The dominant composition is Apply (C3), followed by Remember (C1), Apply (C4), and Understand (C2).   The researcher concludes that for language skill and knowledge, the cognitive dimension of each instruction question is present in the imbalance portion. Based on the result, this book has followed the ministry of education regulation and mereka curriculum in providing HOTS material in the teaching and learning process for language skills and proving LOTS material for knowledge because grammar and vocabulary teach the basics of language. It is suggested for teachers who use this book to be innovative, and creative, even teachers can adapt from other sources in giving instruction to develop students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the need for online placement tests for Teaching Indonesian to Speakers of Other Languages (BIPA) at Bengkulu University. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach and the method was a semi-structured interview. Three international students from Cambodia were interviewed in different Zoom video call sessions during this research. The data collected were then analyzed by using the content analysis technique. There are some findings in this research. First, there was no placement test for BIPA students at Bengkulu University. Second, according to the existing condition of the students, they had different reasons, exposures, experiences, and frequencies in learning or using Indonesian language. Third, the students could not do written tests or paper-based tests (PBT) that required them to come to the test venue in Bengkulu University during the pandemic situation, so an online placement test was used as an alternative. Moreover, the students had some topic preferences to be learned and discussed in Indonesian language. These findings revealed that an online placement test is needed to find out the students’ abilities and to place the students into appropriate levels before conducting BIPA course at Bengkulu University. In the end, the result of this research can later be used to compile placement test materials in accordance with the needs of BIPA students.

Abstract

The Title is an integral part of a journal article because it advertises the article to readers; if it is attractive, readers will read it. However, studies on the characteristics of article titles published in reputable journals in Applied Linguistics and English Language Education are scarce in the literature. Based on quartile rankings, this study compares the linguistic features and content structure of scientific article titles in reputable international journals in Applied Linguistics and English Language Education. Using a content analysis design, 982 article titles from 12 international journals published between 2022 and 2024 were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that the title length varied according to quartile: Q1 and Q3 had a higher average title length than Q2 and Q4, reflecting the tendency to use more descriptive titles in highly reputable journals. Linguistically, noun phrases were the most commonly used syntactic structure, but Q1 journals used compound constructions and -ing verb phrases that reflected the complexity and dynamics of ideas. Regarding content, the research method feature appeared most frequently, followed by data and findings, especially in Q1 and Q3 journals. In contrast, topic-only titles were more dominant in Q4 journals. These findings confirm that the structure of article titles reflects a scientific communication strategy tailored to the Journal's reputation. This study offers a conceptual contribution through a combined classification framework between linguistic features and title content. It provides practical guidance for academic authors in designing effective titles according to the expectations of target journals.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of multicultural-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing basic reading comprehension among English language education students at three universities in Bengkulu, Indonesia. The objective was to assess whether integrating multicultural themes into PBL could improve reading comprehension compared to traditional teaching methods. A total of 140 students participated, divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group engaged with multicultural PBL activities, while the control group followed a conventional teaching model.  Pretest and posttest scores were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests, revealing significant improvements in the experimental group’s reading comprehension (p < 0.05). In contrast, the control group showed minimal change (p > 0.05). Qualitative data from student surveys and observational checklists indicated increased engagement, motivation, and cultural awareness among students in the experimental group. The study concluded that a multicultural-based PBL model is an effective approach for enhancing reading comprehension and fostering intercultural competence. It recommends incorporating multicultural PBL into language teaching curricula to improve both reading skills and global awareness among students.
