Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many writings with educational content were produced. To state his position on facts or opinions, the writer needs to pay attention to the selection of hedges and boosters in accordance with the context. Based on 420 educational content presented on the Covid19.go.id, this study describes the forms and functions of hedges and boosters. This research was conducted in five steps, namely careful reading, recording the forms on data cards, data categorization, data analysis, and conclusion. The results are as follows. The Covid.19.go.id has more boosters than hedges. The most widely used forms of expression, both hedges and boosters, are epistemic adjectives and adverbs. The functions of hedges in educational content are to show uncertainty, avoid confrontation, show politeness, persuade, and provide alternative choices to readers. Meanwhile, boosters have functions to show a strong commitment, show information reliability, and close opportunities for negotiation between writers and readers.

Abstract

Critical discourse analysis (AWK) is one of the views on language in discourse analysis which views powers as always involved in the formation of subjects represented in language. The AWK model used in this paper is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. Critical discourse analysis which generally analyzes media texts can also be done to analyze literary works including short stories. The short story analyzed by Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis is Mbah Sidiq's short story by A. Mustofa Bisri which is presented in the book Collection of Short Calligraphy Paintings. In Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis, texts, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice are examined. Through the descriptive method, finally the three aspects of Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis can be answered. In the text section, the researcher can find three basic elements in the Norman Fairclough model, namely the elements of representation, relations and identity in Mbah Sidiq's short story. While this paper will only discuss one element, namely representation. Mbah Sidiq's short story above is an Islamic short story with a Javanese cultural background. The short story displays a portrait of the life of the Javanese and Indonesian Islamic communities. In addition, Gus Mus, through his short stories, also tries to criticize the behavior and social conditions of Javanese society and Indonesian Islamic society in general, which still cannot separate religious spiritual behavior from ancestral traditions which sometimes contradict Islamic teachings. This was done because Gus Mus in his daily life is a kiai, a preacher who cares for a boarding school, which incidentally is someone who has deeply studied and mastered the Islamic sciences.

Abstract

This research aims to find the translation shifts and the equivalencies of idiomatic expressions. Data in this research were idiomatic expressions found in the novel “The Name of the Rose” and its translation. The method of data collection used reading and recording technique with researchers as the instrument along with some parameters of idiomatic expressions that were proposed by experts.  In analyzing the data, this research used the referential and translational method with structural and componential analysis. The result found that there was another category shift that cannot be explained by the contemporary theory of translation shift. It happens because the contemporary theory of translation shift only focuses on the micro-linguistic level. This type of shift occurred in idiomatic expression due to the lack of equivalencies of the source text (ST) and target text (TT) whether in the grammatical system or the cultural difference. This research suggests that the theory translation shifts should be provided by semantic, pragmatic, discourse, and intercultural knowledge to bridge a gap between the two languages.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the translation of Indonesian cultural terms in the film Battle of Surabaya. It did not intend to pinpoint the exact translation technique used. The animated history of Indonesia and the variety of the language used in the movie, such as Dutch, English, Japanese, Indonesian, and local, motivated the researcher to conduct the research. The research method used mixed-method and translation theory as a ground theory for analyzing the data. The analysis found that 24 vocabularies contain Indonesian culture-each cultural term spread in every aspect. Socio-culture found 17 data or 71% of the total existing data; Material culture only found 1 data, Ecology 3 data, Organization 2 data, Gesture or habits also 1 data. The difference in translating cultural terms was only to equate equivalence in meaning between ST and TT. Bringing cultural aspects in various ways is the same as appreciating a culture, but the way to show it and transfer it becomes a challenge for the translator. The true meaning of a cultural term may not be fully conveyed due to a lack of data or only communicated to each other in a cultural group. It can be solved if the cultural term has a glossary and the translator uses it. This study also found that foreign cultures that have been in the local culture for too long can grow and become part of the local culture itself.

Abstract

The word choice of a name is considered important for every person. A proper name is not only used as a nickname but also as hope from the name giver. The use of proper names is motivated by two factors, socio-cultural and the knowledge of the parents. Ethnically, Javanese people give the name for their child by using an ethnic name. However, such a phenomenon has shifted. The existence of a new trend in naming makes young modern families started to leave the Javanese ethnical name. The young family tends to choose a foreign name as their child’s name. This research is conducted to figure out the shift from Javanese people’s names in 2000 to 2020 as well as specified identities found. The aim of this research is to explain the view of Javanese people towards modernization and globalization in choosing names. This research used a qualitative approach. The data obtained from Javanese people’s names are from Family Card and Information System and Village Connectivity (SIKDES). The result of this research is Javanese people names who were born in 2000 to 2020 tend to use English and Arabic words. The researcher also found the existence of a nomenclature pattern that is divided into religion, birth markers, admired characters, family names, and hopes.
