Among the five functions, the directive is the most used speech function in the conversation of the movie. The function of speech can differ, depending on the data source used. Each data source has a different plot, theme, style, setting, and situation when the dialogues occur.

The data were analyzed by using referential identity method with a descriptive-qualitative approach. This study combined the theories of diglossia, context of situation, function of linguistic landscape, Balinese speech levels, and UNESCO vitality level. The result shows that Balinese language signs in public space are able to characterize the diglossia situation of the Balinese people by indicating four features, namely sign makers, participants receiving messages, caste and social status, and domains. The diglossic situation of the Balinese language is indicated by the variation of the Balinese alus, which is the high variety, and the Balinese andap, which is the low variety. Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the practice of Petang Megang tradition on indigenous Muslim Malay people in Pekanbaru Riau in welcoming the holy month of Ramadhan, and to investigate the influence of Hinduism on this annual tradition. Petang Megang ritual does not only function as a passed-on tradition, but also reflects the acculturation of Hindu and Islam, social interaction, and community culture. This research is a descriptive study, in which data obtained are presented, analyzed, and explained. This study found that Petang Megang tradition reflects a strong relationship between the two beliefs, Hindu and Islam. The relationship can be seen in the similar concepts of purification in Petang Megang which is similar to tirtayatra in Hindu and wudhu (ablution) in Islam. Despite bringing similarity to Hindu tradition, Petang Megang serves as a medium of Islamic dawah (propagation) where it introduces a cultural practice in its relation to religious event (Ramadan). This study suggests that Petang Megang is a symbol of longstanding harmonious co-existence between Hindu and Islam in the region.

Abstract

This research discusses the portrayal of the proletariat social class in AKMU's song entitled Dinosaur. This descriptive qualitative research focuses on finding out the class struggle suffered by the proletariat class in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis portrayed by the lyrics of Dinosaur by AKMU, from the Marxism theory by Karl Marx. The song title Dinosaur itself is a metaphor in the context of debt collectors. On that account, the view of the proletariat social class put forward by Karl Marx (1867) is a propitious match for a song analysis in Dinosaur by AKMU. Data were collected by observing the lyrics, music videos, and related interviews with AKMU as the writer, composer, and singer. The data was flocked together by the note-taking approach to discover data to latch onto valid information related. The conclusion shows that Dinosaur by AKMU portrays economic conditions between the proletariat and the ubiquitousness of debt collectors in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis. The solidity of the debt collector industry was bolstered by the emergence of families from the lower middle class who have entangled in the instability of the poverty rate in South Korea at the time the song Dinosaur was released.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying the types and functions of code-switching uttered by the characters in the novel “The Player”. The data was taken from the novel “The Player” by an Indonesian female author, Aliazalea published in 2020. This study used a theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to identify the types of code-switching. Furthermore, the theory proposed by Gumperz (1982) was used to identify the functions applied in the code-switching found in the novel. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data with descriptive presentation. As a result, 35 codes switching were found in the characters in the novel. The types of code-switching proposed by Hoffman (1991) are inter-sentential switching occurred 9 times, intra-sentential switching occurred 15 times, and emblematic switching occurred 11 times. There are 3 functions implied in the code-switching found from 6 functions proposed by Gumperz (1982). They are interjection, message qualification, and personalization. The other 3 functions are quotation, addressee specification, and reiteration which do not appear in the data. From the analysis, it could be concluded that intra-sentential switching is the type of code-switching most frequently used by the characters. Personalization is the function most frequently implied in code-switching as the characters tend to convey their thoughts by switching the language.
