Reading and searching for tweets from the @natanattda account is a method of collecting data in this study. The theory applied when conducting this study was proposed by Poplack in Romaine (1995) about analyze the different types of code-switching. Another theory was proposed by Hoffman (1991) about the reasons for using code-switching. In this study, two points were discovered through data analysis. The first point was about the various types of code-switching, including Tag switching, Inter-sentential switching, and Intra-sentential switching. The second point was about the reasons for using code-switching. The most dominant type of code-switching found in the data is Inter-sentential switching. From the seven reasons for using the code-switching theory proposed by Hoffman (1991), only two reasons found from this account's tweets include talking about a particular topic and being emphatic about something (expressing solidarity). The most dominant reason for using code-switching found in the data is talking about a particular topic.

Abstract

This study was focused on an analysis of code-switching used by Maudy Ayunda found in the youtube video Catatan Najwa bersama Maudy Ayunda, which was hosted by Najwa Shihab. This study aimed to identify the types of code-switching and to know the reason for using code-switching by Maudy Ayunda. This research was classified as qualitative research with a descriptive method. The data of this study were collected by watching the video on Najwa Shihab's youtube channel and then analyzed descriptively. The theory used to analyze the types of code-switching is the code-switching theory by Hoffman (1991). According to Hoffman (1991), there are four types of code-switching: intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, emblematic and establishing continuity. The code-switching theory by Hoffman (1991) was also used to describe the reason for using code-switching. Hoffman (1991: 116) classified the reasons to use code-switching into seven points, namely, talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor and expressing group identity. As a result, in the conversation duration of 26 minutes, it was found that Maudy used the most inter-sentential switching, and the reason was talking about a particular topic.

Abstract

Loloan Malay is an endangered indigenous language which is also the identity of a minority Muslim community in Jembrana, West Bali. In the midst of the strong Hindu influence in Bali, the Loloan people try to maintain their different linguistic and cultural heritage through oral traditions such as Burdah and Ngelenggang—ritual performances presenting religious verse recitations accompanied by percussion performed during a seven-month pregnancy. This study aimed to explore how Loloan Malay language as their identity is maintained through Burdah and Ngelenggang rituals. Data were collected through interviews and observations, focusing on community leaders, ritual performers, and youths. The findings revealed that conducting the rituals maintains the language through the cultural materials and communication. Furthermore, the research also unpacks the language of having inconsistency in orthography, which affects not only the written communication but also the education. This study implies that sustainable religious practices can be markers of how well languages are maintained.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the message of a person who committed suicide in a letter that was found on 7th September 2021. To define the messages in the letter, this study observed the realization of the theme and rheme types and structure. So, there are three focuses of this study; (1) how is the realization of theme and rheme in the letter, (2) how is the structure of the theme and rheme in the letter, and (3) what are the messages the person who committed suicide wanted the readers to know. The analysis defined three findings. First, most of the themes are in the type of single-ideational which explains the confession of the writer because the theory of ideational theme explains it as a theme for a statement or declarative mode of clause. In this first finding, the writer was identified as well-committed in his action of doing suicide. Second, all the themes from each clause are linked in a Constant thematic pattern. This second finding explains the cohesion of the ideas of the writer in his writings. Third, the statement of the writer which was indicated by the single ideational theme and the message unity which was explained the by finding of the constant thematic progression pattern explained 4 messages (1) a giving responsibility of his children to his wife, (2) complains about his wife disrespect to him, (3) a farewell to his children, and (4) a confirmation of his authorship in the letter. The messages which are defined in the letter tell that the motive of the suicide is “a long-term marriage conflict”.

Abstract

Since the pandemic has been over, a question come asking ‘Did online learning during the pandemic of Covid-19 enhance digital reading habits?’ Answering that inquiry, this study focuses on two questions (1) how are digital reading habits (preference and frequency) of EFL learners? And (2) Why does digital reading habit of EFL learners in that way? This is a qualitative descriptive study. This study collected data by administering written interviews via Google form to 24 informants. There are 15 questions asked to the 24 informants and after analyzing the data, the following findings are found. First, all EFL learners prefer reading digitally either for college assignments, articles, books, or novels. However, due to their preference, EFL learners are reading viral news on social media much more than other reading material. Related to the frequency, the highest frequency of reading is at the level of ‘seldom’ for all of the reading material. So, the digital reading habits of EFL learners are still in poor condition since their preference and frequency are far from accessing scientific articles and books digitally. Answering the second question of the reason for the EFL digital reading habit in that condition, the data analysis comes to the conclusion of learners’ bad digital literacy in accessing scientific articles and books digitally. From the interview questions and the informants' responses, there were found that even though the online learners had been for more than two years, the EFL learners’ digital literacy was in bad condition and so affected the reading preference and frequency in digital.

Abstract

This study explores person deixis whose context reflects a romantic relationship in the movie After. Person deixis is the use of personal pronouns usually used in a conversation. The purpose of this study is to explore the types of person deixis in the context of a romantic relationship using the Pragmatic theory proposed by Levinson (1983). Data were taken from the After movie and analyzed using documentation techniques and analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. This study found three types of persons deixis: first person deixis, second person deixis and third person deixis. These findings indicate the importance of context in interpreting deixis and contribute to a deeper understanding of how language shapes and reflects the development of relationships in cinematic narratives.

Abstract

Every language has a unique system of vowel and consonant sounds, for example, English has five (5) vowels and 21 consonants. Others like in Korean language, it has ten (10) vowels, and nineteen (19) consonants. Since every language has a different set of vowel and consonant systems, it might affect to the differences in the pronunciation of each sounds in each of the languages. Cho (2020) theory states that pronunciation errors result from the transfer of Korean phonological processes to English and the inability to acquire English phonological processes. This study observed three Korean natives, live in South Korea, and have no history of a mother tongue other than Korean. The three participants also came from different backgrounds and English-speaking experiences. The data were taken by recording and examining some English words contained and related to English bilabial consonant sounds. The voice recordings were analyzed to find the differences in their pronunciation applying the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) according to the standard English pronunciation. The finding showed that 1) the Korean speakers were able to pronounce the English Bilabial plosive and nasal /p, b, m/ at the beginning and middle of the word, but there was a tendency to add an extra vowel when the Bilabial consonant plosive /p, b/ placed at the end of the word, 2) the voiceless bilabial plosive /p/ was taken as a substitution consonant for the words that contained fricative consonant /f/, 3) the voiced labial-velar approximant /w/ was not pronounced correctly by having the two lips moving closer, but it was pronounced by either sounding the vowel [ʊ] first or [o] first. Those errors were caused by the different sound systems in Hangeul that influences the speakers’ English pronunciation.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation and effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in enhancing the English reading skills of tenth-grade students at an Indonesian senior high school. The research was motivated by the persistent gap left by traditional language teaching methods, which frequently emphasize grammatical accuracy and vocabulary memorization while often neglecting the development of practical reading abilities. To address this issue, the study systematically examined the application of TBLT through three structured phases: pre-reading, main reading, and post-reading tasks. Each phase was designed to promote active learning, critical thinking, and student engagement in the reading process. The methodology involved classroom observations, task-based instructional activities, and an analysis of student exam scores as the primary indicators of progress. During the pre-reading phase, students were encouraged to activate prior knowledge and predict content, which helped build contextual understanding. In the main reading phase, tasks focused on developing essential reading strategies such as skimming for general ideas and scanning for specific information.

Abstract

This study explores how 4-6-year-old children at Rumah Pelangi Sant Egidio use verbal, nonverbal, and multimodal communication to express themselves and engage with their environment. Using qualitative methods like observation and interviews, the research applies Fleming's VARK model and Bruner's theories on active learning. At Rumah Pelangi Sant Egidio, communication includes verbal language, gestures, and body language, each enhancing understanding and interaction. Visual aids, storytelling, and multimodal approaches, integrating various sensory channels, are crucial for young learners. These methods foster language development, social skills, and cognitive growth. Children naturally use diverse communication styles, including activities like puzzle-solving and interactive technology, to develop teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity. By integrating these communication forms, educators can create effective and inclusive learning environments.
