Abstract

This study is aimed to identify and analyze Balinese diglossia from the perspective of linguistic landscape. Balinese language used in public signs consists of two variations, namely alus and andap. The use of the two variations resembles the culture of Balinese people. Therefore, this study is also intended to provide a new way to view Balinese culture from seeing the Balinese language through non-interactive public signs because there are patterns on each variation used. Furthermore, the use of Balinese variations on signs can be a measurement to acknowledge its vitality; thus, this study is also aimed to measure Balinese language vitality in general and the vitality of its variations. The data of this study were 12 signs collected from banners, billboards, and information signs found in Bali through observation and documentation method. The data were analyzed by using referential identity method with a descriptive-qualitative approach. This study combined the theories of diglossia, context of situation, function of linguistic landscape, Balinese speech levels, and UNESCO vitality level. The result shows that Balinese language signs in public space are able to characterize the diglossia situation of the Balinese people by indicating four features, namely sign makers, participants receiving messages, caste and social status, and domains. The diglossic situation of the Balinese language is indicated by the variation of the Balinese alus, which is the high variety, and the Balinese andap, which is the low variety. The level of language vitality of Balinese high and low is 4, whereas in general is 5.

Abstract

Student motivation is crucial to success in learning a foreign language. This study focuses on analyzing the motivation of students studying Indonesian as a foreign language in the Bipas in-country learning program at Udayana University in Bali. Specifically, the study is aimed at investigating the motivations of foreign students learning Indonesian in the program, and whether students' learning motivation shifts by the end of the course. The study involved 38 foreign students and five Indonesian lecturers during the Spring 2024 semester as respondents, and applied an explanatory sequential mixed methods design which consists of two phases, namely a quantitative phase and a qualitative phase to collect data. The results show that, despite strong support from the Balinese community for using the Indonesian language, students' motivation shifted from instrumental to integrative at the end of the course. Integrative motivation, which is prevalent, is defined as a desire to connect with the culture and community. Instrumental motivation ,on the other hand,  such as the expectation that learning Indonesian will open up career opportunities or improve social status, remains relatively low. To increase overall motivation, the learning programme should combine the two types of motivation, strengthening the sense of social connection and emphasising the practical value and tangible benefits of learning Indonesian.

Abstract

Language plays a vital role in daily interaction, enabling people to convey meaning, build relationships, and coordinate social actions. In spoken discourse, adjacency pairs function as key structural units that organize conversation and guide turn-taking. Although conversational analysis has been widely explored in linguistic theory, its application to authentic or scripted dialogue—particularly in popular media—remains limited. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how adjacency pairs operate in exchanges between Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in the TV series Breaking Bad. The research identifies the types of adjacency pairs used and examines how the characters respond to each other’s utterances. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes transcriptions from the third season and categorizes data based on established adjacency pair types. The findings show that all types appear, with question–answer and request–accept/refuse pairs occurring most frequently. Overall, the study demonstrates how fictional dialogue mirrors real conversational patterns and reveals character dynamics.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact and efficacy of the Online Speaking Test (OST) application on students' motivation and self-efficacy to optimize English learning and produce students with greater English language proficiency. Using a variety of techniques, such as pre-test, observation, interviews, treatment in using the OST, and post-tests to see whether changes had occurred before and after the treatment, 102 university students from various faculties in Bali’s university participated in this study. Employing the OST, the research revealed variations between the factors of rising and decreasing student motivation, anxiety, and self-confidence following treatment and post-treatment. Nevertheless, there was a very small variation in the proportion of students whose self-confidence improved following therapy, which was brought on by variations in the students' English proficiency levels. The students with excellent proficiency inboth comprehending and using English did not encounter major challenges when using the online speaking test. Students who feel less confident, on the other hand, have a different experience. Due to differences in prior learning experience, learner characteristics, teaching and learning methods, learners’ motivations and the urgency of language acquisition, an OST may results differently according several factors affecting the learners intrinsically and extrinsically.

Abstract

This qualitative research of linguistic landscapes in Subak Sembung Ecotourism Area Denpasar. in order to understand how written language in the public domain portrays identity and social dynamics. The study uses a sociolinguistic approach to analyze 11 data samples according to the sign creator's category (top-down and bottom-up), the Spolsky and Cooper (1991) taxonomy, and Landry and Bourhis theory of language functions. The study's primary focus is on the use of language and its symbolic and informational functions in public texts at locations that combine traditional agriculture with sustainable tourism. According to research, the majority of public discourse is conducted in Indonesian, followed by English and Balinese. The use of Balinese script as a symbol of local cultural identity reflects the symbolic function, while the informative function is more prominent in the transmission of practical instructions. Nevertheless, there were overlaps in writing techniques and deviations from grammatical rules. The study concluded that, in the context of ecotourism, it is crucial to standardize writing in accordance with national standards and strengthen the Balinese script in order to preserve culture (Landry & Bourhis, 1997).

Abstract

Language plays a fundamental role in literature, particularly poetry, in shaping and directing the reader’s interpretation of the hidden meaning portrayed by the poet. In regard to this phenomenon, this study examines the construction of gender duality in selected poems written by Tempest in the anthology entitled Hold Your Own through a qualitative content analysis method utilizing retroactive reading and a purposive sampling technique. By juxtaposing the denotative and connotative meaning through the lens of linguistics and literary analysis, this research is theoretically grounded in Riffaterre’s Semiotics and Butler’s Gender Performativity theory. The data consist of thematically and strategically selected lines that reveal nuances of linguistics and literary patterns in representing gender identity. Findings demonstrate that feminime identities are predominantly articulated through lexemes or phrases corelated to softness, passivity, and negative light such as “watching them”, “school bench”, “be kind”, and “witch” meanwhile men are characterized by more assertive, dynamic, and power figure words such as “playing”, “football”, “kick”, “BMW”, and “above her”. The duality of gender is further illustrated through recurrent grammatical deviations such as “how many of yous”, “boy in her”, and “herself top boy” as well as frequent deployment of figurative devices such as simile, paradox, symbolism, hyperbole, and metaphor, one of which is “her shoulder is square”. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the ways linguistics and narrative strategies in Hold Your Own perform a fluid and complex gender identity, thereby engaging the myth of Tiresias and the contemporary discourse of gender.

Abstract

Loloan Malay is an endangered indigenous language which is also the identity of a minority Muslim community in Jembrana, West Bali. In the midst of the strong Hindu influence in Bali, the Loloan people try to maintain their different linguistic and cultural heritage through oral traditions such as Burdah and Ngelenggang—ritual performances presenting religious verse recitations accompanied by percussion performed during a seven-month pregnancy. This study aimed to explore how Loloan Malay language as their identity is maintained through Burdah and Ngelenggang rituals. Data were collected through interviews and observations, focusing on community leaders, ritual performers, and youths. The findings revealed that conducting the rituals maintains the language through the cultural materials and communication. Furthermore, the research also unpacks the language of having inconsistency in orthography, which affects not only the written communication but also the education. This study implies that sustainable religious practices can be markers of how well languages are maintained.
