Abstract

Validating assessment instruments for local curricula presents unique challenges due to context-specific content and reliance on expert judgment. This study applies Generalizability Theory (GT) to evaluate the reliability of a curriculum validation instrument designed for the Social Studies Local Plants program in Fakfak, Indonesia. A fully crossed GT design was used involving 26 items evaluated by 3 expert validators, yielding 78 observations. Each expert rated all items using a 4-point Likert scale. Variance components were estimated using a linear mixed-effects model with REML, implemented via the lme4 package in R. The analysis revealed that item variance accounted for 98.2% of total score variance (σ² = 291.97), indicating strong item discriminability. Rater variance (0.2%) and item × rater interaction (1.1%) were minimal, demonstrating high inter-rater consistency. The Generalizability Coefficient (G = 0.995) and Dependability Coefficient (Φ = 0.986) exceeded the thresholds for both relative and absolute decision-making. A D-study showed that high reliability (Φ ≥ 0.90) could be maintained with as few as 2 raters and 15 items. The instrument demonstrated excellent reliability and is suitable for evaluating local curriculum validity. Minimal rater-related variance suggests that future improvements should focus on item refinement rather than rater training. These findings support the broader use of GT in educational instrument validation, particularly in context-rich, expert-judged settings.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to measure students' mathematical problem-solving ability using the Item Response Theory (IRT) approach with the Generalized Partial Credit Model (GPCM). The research was carried out in North Bahar District, Muaro Jambi Regency, by involving all grade IX junior high school students in the even semester of the 2024/2025 school year as a sample through total sampling techniques. The test instruments were compiled and analyzed based on five main stages, including testing, scoring, and data processing and analysis using PARSCALE 4.1 software. The results of the analysis showed that the instruments used met the assumption of unidimensionality, which at the same time indicated the fulfillment of the assumption of local independence and parameter invariance. The model fit test produces a value indicating that the GPCM model matches the empirical data. Student ability estimates show a distribution that is close to normal, with most students being at moderate to slightly below average ability levels. The parameters of the question items showed high differentiating power and moderate difficulty, while the test information function showed the effectiveness of the instrument in measuring students' ability at average ability. In conclusion, the GPCM model is effectively used in measuring students' mathematical problem-solving abilities validly, accurately, and thoroughly.

Abstract

This study is qualitative research with a descriptive design focusing on ethnobotanical analysis within the traditional wedding ceremonies of the Kerinci community, particularly in Sungai Deras Village. The primary objective of this study is to classify and inventory the diversity and types of flora utilized in wedding rituals at the research site. It aims to document the plant species involved in traditional wedding practices in Sungai Deras Village and to thoroughly analyze the philosophical semantics of their use as representations of local wisdom. The research methodology employs purposive sampling to select key informants, consisting of traditional leaders, religious figures, and community representatives. Data were collected through direct observation of the rituals, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal five main plant components (betel leaf, areca nut, gambier, lime, and tobacco) that collectively shape the ethical pillars of the ceremony. Betel leaf (Piper betle) represents purity of intention and communication; areca nut (Areca catechu L.) symbolizes dignity and hopes for prosperity; gambier (Uncaria gambir) reflects kinship solidarity; lime (calcium/lime, functioning as a component supporting D. aromatica) signifies customary foundations and noble values; and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) conveys social approval from cultural authorities. The use of these plants does not contradict Islamic teachings the predominant religion of the community and its traditional leaders because it aligns with the principle “adat basandi syara’, syara’ basandi kitabullah”

Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ metaphorical thinking skills in the topic of circles. Metaphorical thinking is a higher-order cognitive ability that enables students to relate abstract mathematical concepts to real-life experiences through six thinking stages: Connect, Relate, Explore, Analyze, Transform, and Experience (CREATE). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. Data were collected through observation, written tests on circle material, and semi-structured interviews. The results show that most students were able to connect circle concepts to real-life situations (Connect indicator) and identify relationships among circle elements (Relate indicator). However, some students still faced difficulties in the Explore and Analyze stages, which require deeper conceptual reasoning. The study concludes that metaphorical thinking skills play an essential role in helping students meaningfully and contextually understand circle concepts

Abstract

Ethnomathematics is a potential alternative solution in efforts to preserve culture through the process of cultural integration (ethnography) in mathematics learning. Teachers play an important role in the successful implementation of ethnomathematics. Teachers need to have a deep understanding of the conceptual and practical aspects of ethnomathematics. This knowledge must be known from the start, even when they are still at the stage of becoming prospective mathematics teachers. Therefore, it is important to measure prospective teachers' ethnomathematics knowledge accurately to see the picture of prospective teachers' ethnomathematics knowledge. This research aims to increase the accuracy of measuring the ethnomathematics knowledge of prospective mathematics teachers by comparing several models in the Modern Test Theory approach, which include the Rasch Model, 1, 2, and 3 Parameter Logistics. Data collection was carried out using the Jambi culture-based ethnomathematics test for prospective mathematics teachers with respondents as many as 129 prospective mathematics teachers from Jambi Province. The criteria for the level of accuracy of the model are indicated by the Standard Error Measurement (SEM) and Test Information Function produced by each model. Based on the results of this research, it was concluded that using the Rasch Model produces the best level of accuracy. It is hoped that this research can open new avenues in increasing precision in measuring ethnomathematics knowledge for prospective mathematics teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and psychometrically validate an assessment instrument designed to measure students’ metaphorical thinking ability in mathematics learning, with a specific focus on the Pythagorean Theorem. The instrument was developed using a Research and Development (R&D) framework based on the Oriondo and Antonio model, encompassing test design, empirical tryout, and measurement stages. Six polytomous essay items were constructed according to six indicators of metaphorical thinking: connect, relate, explore, analyze, transform, and experience. Content validity was established through expert judgment using Aiken’s V coefficient, with all items exceeding the minimum validity threshold, indicating strong agreement among experts. Empirical validation was conducted using Item Response Theory (IRT) with the Graded Response Model (GRM), selected for its suitability in analyzing ordered polytomous response data. The results demonstrate that the instrument satisfies the unidimensionality assumption, exhibits strong item discrimination parameters, and shows good model fit across all items. Analysis of the Test Information Function indicates high measurement precision within the ability range of θ −1 to +1, confirming strong local reliability. These findings indicate that the developed instrument is valid, reliable, and capable of providing accurate diagnostic information regarding students’ ability to construct mathematical meaning through metaphors. The study contributes methodologically by demonstrating the applicability of GRM-based IRT analysis for essay-type instruments and substantively by supporting the assessment of higher-order cognitive processes in mathematics learning.
