Abstract

Statistics is a critical subject for developing students' academic and career competencies, yet it remains challenging for many students due to its abstract nature. To address this issue, a study was conducted to design a learning trajectory for teaching statistical concepts by integrating technology, ethnomathematics, and realistic mathematics education (TE-RME) within the culturally relevant context of pranata mangsa, a traditional Javanese calendar system. Employing a design research methodology, the study involved 32 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Semarang, Indonesia. It was conducted in three phases: preparation for the experiment, designing learning activities, and retrospective analysis. The resulting learning trajectory consisted of three structured activities: observing pranata mangsa videos to collect and present data, deriving formulas for measures of central tendency, and exploring methods for calculating data dispersion. Findings indicated that the integration of pranata mangsa in the TE-RME framework significantly enhanced students' understanding of statistical concepts by connecting abstract ideas to culturally meaningful contexts. This approach facilitated quicker and more meaningful learning, demonstrating the effectiveness of incorporating local wisdom into mathematics education. The study also highlights the potential for future research to explore other culturally relevant contexts to teach mathematical concepts, further advancing the field of culturally responsive education.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is an important ability that students must have to master mathematics learning and solve problems. The low mathematical problem-solving ability of students is often caused by the application of conventional learning models. One model that can improve students' mathematical problem-solving abilities is the Search, Solve, Create, and Share (SSCS) learning model. The Search, Solve, Create, and Share (SSCS) learning model emphasizes active student participation and problem-solving, significantly enhancing students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the SSCS learning model in improving students' capacity for solving mathematical problems. The method employed was meta-analysis. The analysis of eight articles revealed a consistently high effect size across all of them.  In addition, the combined effect size of the eight articles was 1.199, which is included in the high category. Based on the results of the t-test, the values of tcount = 30.14 > 1.648 = ttable, so H0 is rejected, indicating that students who engage with the SSCS learning model demonstrate a significantly higher average capability in solving mathematical problems than those who do not use it. Therefore, the SSCS learning paradigm presents a viable alternative for enhancing students' mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students' mathematical literacy by reviewing empirical studies comparing PBL with conventional learning. The results show that PBL significantly improves mathematical literacy, with an effect size of 1.165, categorized as high. However, the effectiveness of PBL is influenced by moderating factors such as education level, student learning style, learning duration, and problem relevance. Findings suggest that PBL is more effective at the junior high school level than senior high school, although the difference is not statistically significant (p > 0.05). This study is limited by the short intervention duration in most analyzed studies and the lack of investigation into external factors like student motivation and teacher roles. Future research is recommended to conduct longitudinal studies, explore the integration of digital tools, and compare the use of real-world and academic problems in PBL. Overall, the findings confirm that PBL is an effective and promising approach for enhancing mathematical literacy when implemented with attention to relevant contextual and learner-specific factors.

Abstract

Problem solving is a necessity for college students, including probabilistic problems. However, student errors in solving these problems continue to occur, necessitating an analysis of the location and causes. The goal of this research is to identify the locations and causes of probabilistic problem-solving errors. This is a qualitative research. The study's subjects were nine students from Semarang State University's Mathematics Education Study Program with low Student Academic Ability (SAA). Based on the subject's problem-solving outcomes, the location and sources of errors in solving probabilistic issues using the Newman Procedure were thoroughly investigated. Data analysis starts with minimising data, then presents data, and finally draws conclusions.  Checking the validity of the data using triangulation approaches, such as comparing test results to interview findings and comparing study subjects' outcomes. The findings of this study revealed that the research subjects made errors during the transformation, process skill, and encoding processes. Students' errors are caused by a lack of understanding of the strategy that must be employed in addressing probabilistic problems, topic confusion between the use of permutations and combinations, and confusion in identifying the sample space when taking one or more items in the experiment. The study's findings are likely to inspire and inform lecturers on how to use appropriate learning tactics to limit the possibility of student errors when tackling probabilistic questions. The conclusion of this research is that student errors in probabilistic problem solving lie in the transformation stage, the calculation process , and the error of writing answers so that it is necessary to be given the task of practicing probability problem solving in stages and there are brief instructions in developing a solution strategy.
