Abstract

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects the physical condition and the individual's psychological. Lupus makes teenagers tend to have low subjective well-being. One of the intervention methods to improve personal well-being is through expressive writing. This research aims to observe the effectiveness of expressive writing to improve teenagers' subjective well-being with lupus. This research used one group pretest post-test design involving four people as the subjects (N=4). The data were collected using the measurement tools of Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), interview, observation, and the results of the writing of the subjects during the therapy session. The results of the experimental research were in the form of quantitative analysis with the data analysis technique of the K-related sample test, showing no significant change to the scores of the subjective well-being among the subjects after given the therapy of expressive writing. However, the qualitative results showed that definitive writing therapy could be a catharsis media for teenagers with lupus. Therefore, we can conclude that expressive writing is less effective in improving subjective well-being but can be used as a catharsis media for teenagers with lupus.

Abstract

This study aims to observe the effectiveness of therapy of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah in reducing the depression of autoimmune survivors. It used the quasi-experiment with the pre-test-posttest control group design – not non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects involved in this study were the female Moslems becoming the survivors of one of the autoimmune diseases. Here, the level of depression of the subject was measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) sub-test of depression developed by Lovibond and Lovibond, adapted into the Indonesian language. The implementation of the therapy refers to the module of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah developed by the researcher and team by referring to the module owned by Maulana, Subandi and Astuti. Data analysis used the Mann Whitney U-Test to determine the difference in the depression level in the experimental group before and after the intervention compared to the control group. The study results showed that therapy of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah effectively reduced the level of depression of autoimmune survivors after passing the changing process taking a particular time.

Abstract

Volunteers participate in charitable activities sincerely without any certain expectations. Concerning this volunteerism, this study aims to investigate the influence of character strength on happiness in environmental and educational volunteers. Employing Seligman's happiness scale as a measurement instrument (α = 0.615) and Peterson and Seligman's (α = 0. 976) Value in Action - Inventory of Strength (VIA-IS) as a measurement instrument to determine character strength, 99 volunteers working in environmental and educational fields of voluntary organizations were recruited. The inclusion criteria for recruiting these participants included male or female participants over 18 years old, active at the organizations for at least six months, unmarried, and living in Yogyakarta. All obtained data were analyzed by using a Spearman correlation analysis technique and a regression analysis technique. The results of this study showed that some of the most influential types of character strength on happiness were leadership (r = 0.354, p = 0.000), appreciation of beauty and excellence (r = 0.337, p = 0.001), gratitude (r = 0.311, p = 0.002), forgiveness (r = 0.305, p = 0.002), and open-mindedness (r = 0.301, p = 0.002). In addition, types of character strength significantly influencing happiness are closely related to collectivistic culture.

Abstract

Apart from occurring in children and adolescents, bullying also occurs in adult groups. The impact on adults includes psychological, physical, social, and economic dimensions. The main impact that often affects victims of adult bullying is emotional problem. Forgiveness and self-esteem are indicated to be two variables that influence resilience in victims of adult bullying. This study aimed to determine the effect of forgiveness and self-esteem on resilience in 94 adults who are victims of bullying. The analysis was performed using regression analysis. The result obtained in this study was that forgiveness and self-esteem affect 49.5% (R Square = 0.495, Sig. = 0.000) of the resilience of bullying victims. Thus, forgiveness and self-esteem are essential keys to increase the resilience of victims of bullying so that they are not prone to experiencing mental disorders.

Abstract

This study inquires the roles of muthmainnah personality and alexithymia in mediating the COVID-19 exposure to mental health problems in Indonesian university students quarantined at home during COVID-19. A total of 276 students completed the following scales: Islamic Personality Scale, Toronto Alexithymia-20 Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Then, an examination on some possible relationships of obtained data was performed by structural equation modeling and mediation analysis. This study revealed that students with muthmainnah personality had lower levels of depression. Furthermore, the muthmainnah personality could mediate COVID-19 exposure to depression experienced by the students. In addition, this study revealed that students with probable depression had more severe alexithymia, such as difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking. The alexithymia could mediate COVID-19 exposure to depression. These results implied that religious aspects could be utilized as strategies to determine and overcome the students’ emotions and could significantly avoid or moderate mental health problems in the case of depression associated with COVID-19.

Abstract

Hypertension is a life-threatening disease often referred to as a silent killer. Dhikr relaxation is one method aimed at providing both physical and psychological tranquility to hypertensive patients. Among the psychological symptoms experienced by hypertensive patients is anxiety. This motivated the researchers to provide an intervention in the form of dhikr relaxation to alleviate the anxiety in middle-aged hypertensive patients. A total of 20 hypertensive patients participated in this study, divided into two groups: an experimental group consisting of 10 individuals and a control group consisting of 10 individuals. It also applied a pretest-posttest control group design, with measurements taken three times (pretest, posttest, and follow-up). The anxiety measurement tool used in this study was the GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7) developed by Spitzer et al. Then the researchers conducted Mann-Whitney analysis. The results of the study indicated that dhikr relaxation is effective in reducing anxiety in the middle-aged hypertensive patients.
