Abstract

Working as a teacher significantly impacts mental health, both psychological well-being and psychological distress. This study examines the effect of working as a teacher on mental health. A mixed-method sequential explanatory design was chosen because it aims to test theories and provide detailed explanations for the results. Quantitative data were collected from 153 primary school teachers in East Java, and qualitative data were collected from 12 teachers who were purposively selected as interview subjects. The data were collected through interviews and four psychological scales (work commitment, engagement, job satisfaction, and mental health). Statistical inferential analysis and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. The analyses showed that teachers’ jobs affected their mental health in terms of psychological well-being and psychological distress. Work commitment effected on mental health R=.653, R2=.426 p<.001; work engagements effected on mental health R=.479, R2=.230 p<.001; and job satisfaction effected on mental health R=.668, R2=.446 p<.001. The findings suggest that teachers’ mental health can be strengthened through their attitudes and behaviours towards work.

Abstract

Abstract

The burden of the family caregivers in providing care to family members who have cancer can reduce resilience. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of religious coping training to enhance the resilience in the sample of family caregivers of cancer disease. Eight family caregivers of cancer disease participated in this study. The participants were divided into intervention group (n = 4) and control group (n = 4). The pre-test post-test control group design was used in this study as the research design and assessed at three points (pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 2-week follow-up). The participants completed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) to assess any changes in resilience. An intervention module was prepared based upon Pargament, Smith, Koenig, and Perez (1998) and modified using Islamic coping strategies based upon the positive religious coping concept. The results showed that the intervention group participants reported a significant increase in resilience compared with the control group. Participants also reported positive changes in interpreting the role of family caregivers. This study discussed the implications and limitations of the finding.

Abstract

Working mothers with multiple roles often struggle to manage internal pressures, leading to stress, including parental stress associated with the demands of raising children. Islamic religious coping and social support are factors that can influence the level of parenting stress. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Islamic religious coping, social support, and parenting stress in working mothers with young children. A quantitative approach was used in this research, targeting a population of working mothers with early childhood-aged children across Indonesia. The sample was selected through purposive sampling, with criteria: mothers who work or earn independently, have young children, and reside in Indonesia. A total of 206 respondents were included in the research sample. Validity testing was conducted using corrected item-total correlation, while reliability testing was performed with Cronbach's Alpha. The instruments used were the Parenting Stress Scale (r=0.828), the Islamic Religious Coping Scale (r=0.658), and the Social Support Scale (r=0.850). The writer analyzed the data by using multiple linear regression analysis with a stepwise regression method and a partial correlation analysis. The assumption tests included assessments of normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity. Hypothesis testing was carried out, and the effective contribution of each predictor variable was analyzed. This research is expected to contribute to parenting practices with young children.

Abstract

Nowadays, students often face interpersonal conflicts caused by conflicting behaviors such as differences of opinion, interests or conflicts between individuals. Some previous studies have shown that the way to deal with a conflict is to forgive the person. This study aims to find out the relationship between emotional intelligence and forgiveness in Bangka Belitung and Central Java students. A total of 109 students studied in Bangka Belitung and Central Java obtained through purposive sampling techniques. The measurement used in this study is a short-form trait emotional intelligence questionnaire (TEIQUE-SF) scale with an alpha cronbach coefficient of 0.981 and a forgiveness scale of 0.935. The results of the study showed a positive relationship between emotional intelligence and proven forgiveness of a significant (2-tailed) result of 0.048 (p 0.05). However, the results of the analysis also showed that there was no difference in the level of emotional intelligence and forgiveness among students studying in Bangka Belitung and Central Java. The results also showed no difference in forgiveness between students from Central Java Province and Bangka Belitung Province with a probability value of forgiveness variable (sig.) of 0.467 (p .05)

Abstract

Anxiety disorders are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the sixth most common non-lethal disease that contributes to a decline in global health. In emerging adulthood, which is the developmental stage of individuals aged 18-25, anxiety is the most common disorder. This study aims to determine the relationship between materialism and anxiety mediated by self-esteem in emerging adulthood in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected through the quota sampling technique and involved 332 emerging adults aged 18-25, consisting of 69 men and 263 women. Measurements were made using the Materialistic Value Scale of Richins and Dawson, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. The scales were distributed through an online questionnaire. Hypothesis testing was conducted using mediation regression analysis with the causal step method. The results show that all the regression paths were significant, indicating that self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between materialism and anxiety (B = 0.055, p < .01). The findings provide an overview of the dynamics of early adult individual anxiety related to materialism and self-esteem.

Abstract

The threat of sexual violence can occur anywhere, including in the family environment. The subject of this study was a fifteen-year-old girl with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder who had been a victim of incest by her stepfather. The study aims to examine the effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. It uses a Single Case-Single Subject ABA design. The intervention involved 12 sessions of trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder were measured by the Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale (CPSS). There was a change in the CPSS scores in the intervention and post-intervention processes, with the post-traumatic stress disorder scores changing from the moderate to the mild category of post-traumatic stress disorder. The decrease in the scores was also evidenced by the results of the different pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention CPSS scores using Mann-Whitney nonparametric analysis. The study has implications for the application of trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in adolescent girls who are victims of incest.

Abstract

Resilience is necessary for the prisoners who are subjected to legal sanctions in accordance with criminal cases committed. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the resilience of the prisoners living in a prison regarding social support and husnuzan. A quantitative correlational method was used to explore the relationship between social support, husnuzan, and resilience. The participants were Muslim male prisoners, aged 18 to 60 years, incarcerated for the first time at Correctional Institution “X” in Yogyakarta. A total of 206 participants were obtained using a purposive sampling method and data were collected through three psychological scales, namely resilience, social support, and husnuzan. The result showed that there was a positive relationship between social support & husnuzan and the resilience of the prisoners. This implies that the prisoners have high resilience when there is a positive thought about the future, as well as receive love and support from family and friends.
