Abstract

Critical thinking is a skill which teachers and students need to have in order to be able to solve their problems appropriately. The teachers should incorporate critical thinking in the teaching and learning activities and one of them is through questioning in the form comprehension questions. This social service program was intended to provide teachers with room for improving their capability in generating comprehension questions which are critical-thinking based. This program was held in SMA Islam Al-Badriyah East Lombok and it was attended by 18 English teachers of Private Senior High Schools located in East Lombok district. The activities within this program included presentation, discussion, working in group, presenting group work task and evaluation. From this social service program, it was found that the English teachers participated in all activities enthusiastically, especially, in the discussion and in generating comprehension questions. The questions generated by the participants were not only in the level of lower-order thinking but also in the level of higher-order thinking. Further, the questionnaire result showed that in general the participants appreciated this program and hoped the similar program to come in the future to improve their competency or professionalism in English language teaching.

Abstract

Guru mempunyai peranan yang sangat penting dalam meningkatkan SDM (Sumber Daya Manusia) dan menyiapkan para peserta didik untuk mampu menghadapi tantangan zaman. Salah satu sarana yang bisa dimanfaatkan oleh guru bahasa Inggris untuk kebutuhan tersebut adalah melalui kegiatan membaca yang dapat melatih kemampuan berfikir kritis, kreatif dan aktif. Question Generation merupakan kegiatan belajar dimana peserta didik dilatih untuk mengajukan atau membuat pertanyaan terhadap apa yang mereka sudah baca yang terdiri dari pertanyaan literal, inferential dan evaluative. Kegiatan Pengadian Pada Masyarakat (PPM) ini bertujuan untuk mensosialisasikan model pembelajaran membaca berbasis Question Generation yang dengannya para guru bhs Inggris dapat melatih para peserta didik mereka untuk aktif, kreatif dan berfikir kritis dalam kegiatan membaca. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di SMAN 1 Gunung Sari dan melibatkan 20 orang guru bahasa Inggris SMA, SMK dan MA di wilayah kecamatan Gunung Sari. Hasil kegiatan PPM yang meliputi penyampaian materi, diskusi, latihan dan evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa para peserta terlihat antusius dan aktif dalam mengikuti rangkaian kegiatan yang ada, tekun memperhatikan dan menyimak materi yang disampaikan oleh tim, aktif berdiskusi atau tanya jawab terkait materi sosialisasi dan masalah pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan juga praktik dalam membuat pertanyaan untuk teks yang mereka baca. Selain itu, hasil isian angket evaluasi kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa para peserta menyambut baik kegiatan ini karana dapat menambah pengetahuan dan wawasan mereka, sehingga mereka berharap jika ada kegiatan serupa pada masa yang akan datang dengan melibatkan lebih banyak guru dan materi yang lebih fokus pada teacher needs dan problem solving.

Abstract

Abstrak: Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan siswa pada ragam-ragam bahasa Indonesia dan meningkatkan kompetensi mereka dalam menggunakan bahasa Indonesia baku. Kami melakukan beberapa kegiatan yang kami bagi ke dalam tiga tahapan mulai dari tahap awal (observasi) sampai tahap akhir (evaluasi). Pada tahap awal kami mengumpulkan informasi menggunakan wawancara, kuesioner, dan latihan diagnostic test. Pada tahap inti, kami memberikan penyuluhan tentang ragam-ragam bahasa dan aturan tatabahasa Indonesia baku. Pada tahap akhir, kami melakukan evaluasi melalui kegiatan sharing session dan post-test untuk mengetahui tingkat pemahaman siswa setelah penyuluhan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya antusiasme siswa yang tinggi mengikuti kegiatan dan peningkatan kompetensi menjawab soal-soal tatabahasa Indonesia yang sebelumnya tidak dipahami dan disalahgunakan.Abstract: This activity aims to introduce students to the variety of Indonesian languages and to improve their competence in using Indonesian standard language. We carried out three stages of activities from the initial stage to the final stage. In the initial stage, we collected information by interview, questionnaires, and diagnostic tests to gain information about the students' problems in using the language. At the core stage, we presented materials on the variety of Indonesia languages and the correct use of grammatical rules. In final stage, we made evaluation through sharing session and post-test.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan kesalahan penulisan konjungtor dalam novel Garis Waktu: Sebuah Perjalanan Menghapus Luka karya Fiersa Besari. Penelitian ini menginventarisasi beberapa kesalahan dengan data yang bersifat mewakili. Metode yang digunakan adalah dengan mengumpulkan seluruh konjungtor dalam novel dan mengklasifikasikannya sesuai dengan bentuk kesalahan. Konjungtor dikumpukan bersama konteks kalimatnya agar dapat dijelaskan. Konteks kalimat yang diambil adalah kalimat yang memenuhi standar konstruksi kalimat majemuk. Hasil penelitian yakni terdapat tiga kesalahan penulisan konjungtor dalam novel tersebut. Kesalahan pertama adalah kesalahan penggunaan konjungtor yang berlebihan dalam sebuah konstruksi. Kesalahan kedua adalah kesalahan penempatan posisi konjungtor yang terbagi menjadi dua, yakni kesalahan penempatan konjungtor yang menyatakan hubungan koordinasi dalam kalimat majemuk setara dan kesalahan penempatan konjungtor yang mengawali sebuah paragraf. Kesalahan ketiga adalah tumpang-tindih antarkonjungtor dalam konstruksi kalimat majemuk bertingkat.Abstract:  This study aims to describe errors in conjunction writing in the novel Garis Waktu; Sebuah Perjalanan Menghapus Luka by Fiersa Besari. This study inventoried some errors with data that are representative. The method used is to collect the entire conjunction and classify it according to the form of errors. The conjunction is collected with the context of the sentence to be explained. The context of the sentence is a sentence that meets the standard construction of compound sentences. The result of writing found there are three errors of conjunction writing in the novel. The first error is the excessive use of the conjunction in a construction. The second error is the misplacement of the conjunction positions that occur in two, namely the misplacement of the conjunction stating the coordination relation in equivalent compound sentence and the incorrect placement of the conjunction that starting a paragraph. The third error is the overlap between conjunction in the construction of multi-compound sentences.

Abstract

Abstrak:  Pelatihan Penulisan Kreatif Terstruktur di MA Raudhatusshibyan NW Belencong ini bertujuan untuk:  1) mengakrabkan peserta didik dengan budaya  literasi; 2)  membelajarkan peserta didik agar memiliki keterampilan literasikhususnya keterampilan menulis terstruktur dalam bahasa Indonesia; 3) memotivasi peserta didik untuk menulis kreatif dan terstruktur dalam kehidupan sehari-hari; 4)  membantu tugas para guru  dalam membelajarkan keterampilan  literasi.  Mitra kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah pihak yayasan dan pengurus MA Raudhatusshibyan. Pelaksanaan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat  meningkatkan keterampilan peserta khususnya  dalam teknik  penulisan  kreatif  terstruktur Bahasa Indonesia  dan meningkatkan pemahaman pelajar terhadap nilai-nilai budaya literasi.Kata Kunci: literasi, penulisan kreatif, MA RaudhatusshibyanAbstract:  This  community  service themed  structured-creative writing  training  at MA Raudhatusshibyan NW Belencong aims to: 1)  raise  awareness of the importance of the literate culture  among  students; 2) train students to become more  literate and  skillful especially  in  structured-creative writing in Indonesian language; 3)  enthuse  students to eagerly  write structured-creative writing in  their  daily life; and 4)  help teachers in improving  the students’  literacy skill.  Our partners in this community service are the foundation and the  administrators of MA  Raudhatusshibyan  NW Belencong Gunung Sari. It is hoped that this community service can improve the students’  literacy  skill especially  in  structured-creative writing in Indonesian language  as well as  increase the students’ understanding of the values of literacy. Abstract

Emotional (un)wellness in the time of learning speaking among university students is recognized as an important issue, thus more data on students’ psychological problems level and effective strategies to overcome such problems are needed. All enrolled 2nd semester students from English Education Department at the University of Mataram were invited to complete an online-based survey. The psychological problems were assessed using qualitative method. Results showed that the psychological problems encountered by the students included: anxiety (62%, High), fear of making mistakes (54%, Moderate), feeling embarrased (48%, Moderate), lack of confidence (51%, Moderate), and lack of motivation (19%). Leading psychological problem is anxiety that comprises more than one tenth percent of the total problems. The main causes of the problems were associated with: fear of negative responses from the classmates, fear of sounding silly when speaking, and feeling embarassed to speak. In coping with these problems, the students preferred to use talk-to-the-mirror and talk-to-a-friend methods. Despite the many problems, majority of the students have very low demotivation level (19%), meaning that they have very high motivation to learn, to participate and to improve their speaking competence in learning speaking (81%). These results provide evidence that psychological problems in learning speaking among university students do exist. They also highlight the need for serious efforts to overcome the problems.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of implememting Jigsaw IV technque in teaching raeding of the narrtive text to the 11th grade students at SMAN 1 Kuripan West Lombok Regency. The current study involved the eleventh grade students as the samples of the study. It applied a two-group of pre-test and post-test design with the total of 24 students in the Experimental Group and 24 students in the Controlled Group. Upon the comletion of the pre-test and prior to the post-test, some treatments in the form of teaching and learning reading of narrative text using Jigsaw IV technique were given to the Experimental Group. The results show that after implementing the Jigsaw IV technique in teaching reading using narrative text, the students' reading comprehension achievement increased significantly with a substantial level of effectiveness. It indicates through the findings that using Jigsaw IV technique in teaching reading of the narrative text helps students improve their reading comprehension.

Abstract

Due to the dynamic and ever-changing contexts of their work, teachers need to continuously develop their professionalism. One professional development procedure close enough to teachers’ work place, the classroom, is Lesson Study (LS). This paper illustrates the potentials benefits of implementing LS in one Islamic school in Lombok and the challenges of implementing this procedure in this particular school. Data were collected through distribution of questionnaire to 31 teachers of this school. Results of data analysis indicate that all teachers are positive about the advantages of applying LS in their classrooms. However, they are also aware of the potential challenges of implementing this professional development procedure in the school, which needs careful consideration. Following a list of all these challenges is recommendation of how to deal with them.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant difference between male and female students’ ability in answering factual and vocabulary-in-context questions of the TOEFL-Like reading comprehension test. Secondary data analysis was utilized by taking reading comprehension test scores of twenty-one male and twenty-one female students of the English Education Program. Samples were selected using random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-test. Results showed that the t-values of sig. 2-tailed was higher than 0.05 in male and female students’ ability in answering both the factual questions (0.267 > 0.05) and the vocabulary-in-context questions (0.837 > 0.05). The results revealed that there was no significant difference between male and female students’ ability in answering factual and vocabulary-in-context questions of the TOEFL-Like reading comprehension test.

Abstract

This study focuses on how code switchings (CS) are used in the student-lecturer interaction in WhatsApp-based online learning. It specifically aims at investigating the types, the functions, and the most dominant types of CS used in the so-called interaction. 233 code-switched utterances from the students’ and the lecturer’s chats were collected as the primary source data. The chats took place during the online learning of the Academic Vocabulary and Corpus course from March to November 2020. For data analysis, the types of CS proposed by Poplack and the functions of CS by Eldridge and Flyman-Mattsson/Burenhut were endorsed. The results show that the analyzed data contain 3 types of code-switching that included tag switching (21 uses, 9%), intra-sentential switching (197 uses, 85%), and inter-sentential switching (15 uses, 6%). Intra-sentential switching is the most dominant type found in the conversation. During the interaction, the lecturer applied 3 functions of CS that included topic switch (46%), affective function (23%), and repetitive function (31%). Meanwhile, the students applied 4 functions of CS that included equivalence (28%), floor-holding (2%), reiteration (52%), and conflict-control (18%).
