Abstract

This research aims to describe the effectiveness of Grammarly feedback on students' progress in argumentative writing. Grammarly is an online automated writing evaluation tool that focuses on giving feedback on the language used in any type of writing. The tool was used in argumentative writing courses for 34 third-semester students at a state university in Mataram. The research used a descriptive qualitative method to collect data on the students' perceptions. The data was collected using validated questionnaires with a four-point Likert scale and supported by interviews. The findings show that students generally had positive perceptions of Grammarly. They found it effective for identifying and correcting errors in their writing, especially in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. They considered the correctness feature to be the most helpful. Additionally, they believed that using Grammarly improved their motivation and grammatical competence in argumentative writing. However, some participants had negative perceptions of Grammarly's weaknesses, particularly in providing feedback on the arrangement of thesis statements, counter-arguments, and the use of evidence in argumentative writing.

The students’ paraphrasing ability was tested before and after the treatment with both manual paraphrasing instruction and QuillBot paraphrasing tool. While, the students’ opinions towards paraphrasing instruction integrating the QuillBot paraphrasing tool was discovered through questionnaire. Further, the collected data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to answer the predetermined research objectives. The results of t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ paraphrasing ability before and after the treatment with significance value 0.000 lower than 0.05. In addition, most students responded positively to the integration of QuillBot in paraphrasing instruction, as it not only improved their literacy skills but also their motivation in learning paraphrasing in which the use of QuillBot paraphraser is simple, easy, instant and time-saving. This study highlights and confirms the potential of AI tools like QuillBot to enhance language instruction. Other reseachers might compare the efficacy of QuillBot paraphraser to other automatic paraphraser in writing instruction and use both questionnaire and interview to obtain more detailed information about the students’ attitudes or opinions.

Abstract

As technology plays an increasingly significant role in education, tools like Google Translate have become widely accessible for language learning and translation. This study investigates the perceptions of second-grade students at SMAN 10 Mataram regarding the use of the Google Translate application as a tool for translating English materials. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. This study used structured interviews based on a set of guidelines to evaluate students' perceptions of Google Translate as a tool for translating English content. A qualitative and descriptive approach was applied for data collection, with the data presented and analyzed in stages, starting with interview analysis. The interviews, incorporating questions based on the 5W + 1H framework, aimed to gather information about students' perceptions before and after using Google Translate, as well as the challenges they faced and their strategies for overcoming them. Mobile phones and note-taking were used to record and capture additional information during the interviews. The findings show that most students view Google Translate as a helpful, time-efficient, and user-friendly tool for understanding English texts. However, limitations such as inaccuracies in grammar and context were noted. Despite these issues, most students have a positive attitude towards using Google Translate as a supplementary aid in their English learning. The study concludes that while Google Translate is a valuable resource, it should be used alongside teacher guidance and other learning strategies to enhance language proficiency.

Abstract

In the 21st century, digital literacy has become a fundamental competency for teachers, particularly in English language teaching. However, many madrasah teachers continue to face significant difficulties in utilizing and integrating digital tools and resources into their classroom practices. This study aims to investigate the challenges or difficulties encountered by rural and semi-urban madrasah English teachers in utilizing digitally-mediated authentic teaching materials. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 37 participants through questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed three main categories of difficulties: technical barriers, competency gaps, and contextual constraints. Technically, while 70% of teachers reported that students have access to digital devices, only 25% had stable internet access, and over 72% lacked essential teaching tools (APE: Alat Peraga Edukatif). In terms of competency, only 18.9% felt confident using platforms such as Canva, interactive LiveWorksheets, or Google Forms, and just 5.4% were confident in designing tasks based on local resources. Contextually, 86.4% lacked access to information about seminars or training, and 67.6% noted that professional development activities are rarely available in madrasahs (Islamic schools). The study concludes that these challenges require targeted interventions such as digital literacy training adapted to low-resource contexts, collaborative forums for material development, and broader access to professional development platforms such as the National Geographic Learning webinars and many others.

Abstract

This study discusses the perceptions of third-semester students in the English education program at Mataram University regarding the utilization of YouTube as a learning resource for enhancing their English-speaking skills. This study aims to investigate and determine students' perceptions of YouTube as a learning resource to improve their English-speaking skills and the factors that influence them. The research methods used in this study are mixed methods by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews. The results of this study show that students have a positive view of using YouTube as a learning resource to improve their English-speaking skills and the perception is influenced by internal factors and external factors from the students. The findings indicate that the students' characteristics and the features of YouTube contribute to the enhancement of English-speaking skills. However, while the majority of the students view YouTube positively as a tool for enhancing their English-speaking abilities, a minority has an opposing perspective.  Therefore, it is recommended that future research explore the long-term impact of YouTube on speaking proficiency and evaluate specific content types. Furthermore, incorporating structured YouTube-based tasks into classroom instruction may enhance learning outcomes while minimizing the challenges students face when using the platform independently.
