Abstract

ABSTRACT This Community Service Program is a continuation of the previous program held in 2021 and 2022 (Putera et al., 2021; Putera et al., 2022). Slightly different but related to the previous ones, this year's theme focused on creating the draft of authentic English teaching materials based on Linguistic Landscape that integrates digital/online media both in the learning activities and assignments. As a new approach in multilingualism and English language learning, Linguistic Landscape encourages the use of authentic materials and learning themes that are present in students' surroundings, whether from non-digital or digital sources. The use of authentic materials and themes results in contextual, relevant learning experiences for students, as they understand authentic issues in their environment (such as waste problems, smoking hazards, etc.) more than non-authentic issues they may have never seen or experienced in their lives. The abundance of digital resources (digital landscape) can be leveraged to create effective, affordable, and easily accessible English language teaching materials. It is expected that this program addressed several challenges faced by madrasah teachers, such as a lack of creativity in developing authentic LL-based teaching materials integrated with digital media, a lack of creativity in developing LL-based teaching materials that integrate digital literacy, and a lack of digital literacy among madrasah students in West Lombok due to the scarcity of assignments/projects that utilize digital media to enhance students' language skills and the effectiveness of English language learning. In line with the aforementioned issues, the training activity for developing LL-based teaching materials integrating digital/online literacy into student assignments/projects becomes crucial, considering that 21st-century learning and the current independent learning or Merdeka Belajar curriculum require teachers and students to be proficient in using digital technology, aware of current issues in their environment, and updated so that they are not only proficient in using a foreign language but also capable of providing solutions for the improvement of society and their environment. This program was conducted at MTs Raudlatusshibyan NW Belencong, Gunung Sari Subdistrict, West Lombok Regency, with the target audience being madrasah teachers that teach English subject at schools. The results of this program show a high level of success, as seen from the questionnaire results regarding understanding of the material, delivery of the material, and challenges in integrating Linguistic Landscape with suitable digital literacy media.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to explore the challenges faced by students in writing descriptive text about local places and to describe how they deal with these challenges. A descriptive method was used, with a writing test and a questionnaire as instruments. From the results of the writing test, the students' scores on the organization aspect were the lowest, which means that students still have difficulties structuring their writing effectively and presenting their ideas in a clear and logical way. It involves issues like paragraph structure, coherence, and transitions between paragraphs. In addition, from the students' responses in the questionnaire, it was found that more than half of the students who participated in the questionnaire section felt that limited vocabulary was their main challenge in writing descriptive texts about local places. This indicates that the students felt that they did not have enough choice of words or phrases to effectively describe the place they were writing about. Moreover, to deal with the challenges, they used various strategies to navigate the complexity of writing about local places. These strategies include thorough observation, pre-writing, revision before completion, seeking examples, seeking feedback from peers, utilizing the power of artificial intelligence (AI), utilizing visual references, and regular practice. In conclusion, the paper shows the challenges students faced in writing descriptive text about local places and the strategies they employed to address these challenges.

Abstract

For the academic year 2022–2023, this study aims to know the correlation between speaking ability a and vocabulary mastery at the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Pringgabaya's vocabulary and speaking proficiency. This study used quantitative methodologies and samples from as many as eleven classes in class VIII, with a representative from each class. The duration of this study was roughly six weeks. 33 students took multiple choice vocabulary examinations with up to 25 questions, and within 5 weeks, speaking assessments were given to the students. In addition, the average score for male vocabulary mastery was 58 and the average score for speking mastery female was 67.33. The average vocabulary mastery score for male was 63.33, and the average score for female speaking ability was 66.11. It can be said that there is no correlation between the 8th students at SMPN 1 Pringgabaya's vocabulary proficiency and their speaking skills. As a result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is disproved while the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. This indicates that the hypothesis assumption's correlation value is less than the significant value (Rxy rt).

Abstract

This study investigates the translation problems, strategies, and the most frequently used strategy in translating Indonesian thesis abstracts into English. The subjects of this research comprised eight thesis abstracts written by non-English department students at the University of Mataram during the 2023 academic year. Utilizing Baker’s theory on translation problems and strategies, which encompasses eleven aspects, this study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses. The findings reveal a total of 78 translation problems across the eight Indonesian thesis abstracts. Among Baker's identified problems, only eight were observed, including: culture-specific concepts (31 instances), source language concepts not lexicalized in the target language (4 instances), semantically complex source language words (14 instances), a lack of specific terms in the target language (1 instance), differences in expressive meaning (8 instances), differences in form (2 instances), differences in frequency and purpose of specific forms (6 instances), and the use of loan words in the source text (12 instances). To address these challenges, seven out of eight translation strategies from Baker’s theory were employed in the English thesis abstracts. The most utilized strategy was translation using loan words (35 instances, 45%), followed by translation using a more general word (12 instances, 16%), translation using a neutral word (10 instances, 13%), translation by omission (10 instances, 13%), translation by paraphrase using a related word (4 instances, 5%), and the least employed strategies were translation using cultural substitution (3 instances, 4%) and paraphrase using unrelated words (3 instances, 4%). Of the 78 translation problems identified, 77 were resolved using the seven strategies, while one problem remained unsolved due to an unacceptable translation. This thesis aims to serve as a valuable reference for translators, English department students, and researchers in the field of translation. The findings indicate a significant need for enhanced support and resources in the translation process for non-English department students at the University of Mataram.

Abstract

This study examines the information correspondence between the source and target language by analyzing the translation equivalence according to Nida and Taber’s theory. This project aims to analyze transcript data from a speech video on The White House YouTube channel. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology. Data was obtained using note-taking and transcription methods, then processed in three stages: reduction, presentation, and verification. Based on the findings; there are 110 data (55.8%) which are dominated by Formal equivalence, whereas 73 data (37%) are classified as Dynamic equivalence. Meanwhile, 14 data sets (7.1%) contain errors in the translation. As for the conformity of information, out of 197 data, only 14 data show errors or inconsistencies in essential areas such, proper nouns, terms, and keywords. Other translation information produced 74 data that captured meaning and emotional nuances related to the cultural context, and 109 data that maintained the structure of the translated text using a literal approach, resulting in stiff, awkward, and strange translations.
