Abstract

Educational institutions are required to continuously innovate to respond to rapid technological development and increasing competition, while maintaining humanistic and cultural values. School leadership plays a crucial role in ensuring that learning innovation is implemented effectively and sustainably. This study aims to analyze the role of the principal in implementing learning innovations and to identify the challenges faced in the innovation process at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using field research. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal, direct observation of school activities, and document analysis related to learning innovation programs. The findings indicate that the principal plays a central role in driving learning innovation through a servant leadership approach that emphasizes collaboration, teacher empowerment, and student-centered learning. Learning innovations were implemented through the integration of technology-based learning systems, project-based learning, and curriculum enrichment while maintaining Islamic educational values. Internal challenges mainly involved aligning stakeholders’ commitment, while external challenges included parental support and economic limitations. The study concludes that servant leadership contributes significantly to the successful implementation of learning innovations by fostering a supportive school climate, encouraging stakeholder participation, and balancing technological advancement with Islamic cultural values.

Abstract

Qur’anic reading and writing skills remain a challenge for junior secondary school students with diverse religious backgrounds. This study examines the implementation of extracurricular-based Islamic Religious Education learning methods for Qur’anic reading and writing at SMP Negeri 2 Lasem, a public junior high school in Central Java, Indonesia. The study aims to identify the learning methods applied and their contribution to improving students’ Qur’anic literacy skills. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through classroom observations, interviews with Islamic Religious Education teachers, extracurricular instructors, and seventh-grade students, as well as documentation analysis. The findings show that Qur’anic Reading and Writing extracurricular activities function as supportive learning spaces beyond formal classroom instruction. Lecture methods introduce basic tajwid and letter articulation, while discussion and question-and-answer methods facilitate interactive correction of reading errors. Guided practice emerged as the most effective approach for improving reading accuracy and fluency. Despite challenges such as limited time, varied student abilities, and inconsistent motivation, the integrated use of these methods contributed to improvements in students’ Qur’anic reading competence and religious character development. The study concludes that extracurricular-based Islamic Religious Education learning offers a practical model for enhancing Qur’anic literacy in public secondary schools.

Abstract

This study explores the strategies employed by Islamic Religious Education teachers in responding to the challenges of modernity at SMPIT Al-Uswah Magetan, an integrated Islamic junior high school in Indonesia. The study was conducted in the context of increasing exposure to digital technology, globalization, and social change that influence students’ learning behavior and religious character. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with Islamic Religious Education teachers and the school principal, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings show that teachers apply several empirically observed strategies, including regulating students’ use of digital devices during school hours, strengthening religious literacy through Qur’an reading and discussion activities, providing regular spiritual guidance through worship practices, maintaining collaboration with parents and external institutions, and demonstrating exemplary behavior in daily interactions. The study also identifies supporting factors such as a religious school environment, leadership support, and teacher commitment, as well as constraints including social media influence, limited parental involvement, and diverse student backgrounds. These findings indicate how Islamic Religious Education teachers adapt instructional and character-building practices to maintain Islamic values within a modern educational setting.

Abstract

Modern education faces a crisis of meaning characterized by the dominance of instrumental rationality, technocratization, and the reduction of educational goals to cognitive achievement and administrative performance. This condition causes education to lose its function as a process of holistic human formation— ethically, existentially, and spiritually. This study aims to analyze the crisis of meaning in education through a philosophical dialogue between Western and Islamic traditions, examining how both understand the goals of education and the formation of the human subject. The method used is qualitative library research based on an interpretive-hermeneutic paradigm. Primary data was obtained from the works of Western thinkers Dewey, Freire, Heidegger, and Islamic thinkers Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali, Fazlur Rahman, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, while secondary data consisted of journal articles and contemporary academic works. The results of the study show that Western education emphasizes the formation of conscious, rational, free, and responsible subjects, but has experienced a narrowing of meaning due to technocratic pressures. Meanwhile, Islamic education emphasizes the formation of adab (ta'dīb), the integration of knowledge, ethics, and a transcendental orientation that guides humans to understand the purpose of life and their existential responsibilities. A synthesis of the two traditions shows that meaningful education is achieved through a balance between intellectuality and ethicality, critical reflection, and value orientation. These findings offer a philosophical framework for reformulating the goals of modern education as a process of understanding humans holistically from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Islamic science for women and the social construction of women's religious education in Packaging village, examining the implementation of religious education programs organized by 'Aisyiyah Ranting Kemasan, and examine its contribution and impact on increasing women's awareness. This study uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory descriptive design. Data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with 'Aisyiyah administrators and members and documentation studies, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model which included data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawn, with data validity strengthened through source triangulation. The results of the study show that the limited participation of women in religious education is not caused by low interest in learning, but by social construction, domestic burden, and lack of social support. Community-based religious education managed by 'Aisyiyah through Qur'anic tahsin activities, routine recitation and contextual Islamic studies has been proven to be able to expand access to religious education for village women. The program has an impact on increasing religious understanding, women's confidence, and strengthening women's social solidarity. This study confirms that community-based Islamic religious education managed by women's organizations such as 'Aisyiyah has a strategic role as an instrument for women's empowerment and strengthening Islamic science in the context of rural communities.

Abstract

Salafi political thought is one of the important studies in contemporary Islam that has an influence on various aspects of Muslim life, including Islamic education. Salafism as an understanding that seeks to restore the teachings of Islam to the practice of the salaf generation not only emphasizes aspects of faith and worship, but also includes social and political dimensions. In its development, the political thought of the Salafis shows a diversity of views, ranging from the attitude of staying away from politics, being passive and obeying the legitimate government, to active involvement in Islamic education as seen in the cultivation of the value of obedience to leaders, strengthening the faith, social stability, and the formation of students' character. Islamic political values are transformed through curriculum, learning methods and the example of educators that emphasize the habituation of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar. Islamic education in the Salafi perspective is not only directed at intellectual development, but also the development of moral, spiritual and social responsibility of students as servants of Allah and citizens. Therefore, Salafi political thought contributes to strengthening the values of Islamic education which is oriented towards the formation of character and religious awareness in the life of society and the state.

Abstract

Internationalizing Islamic higher education requires universities to cultivate enduring community values alongside academic excellence. This study examines the role of Islamic education in promoting community values among international students at Muhammadiyah University Surakarta, addressing what forms enact these values, which factors shape them, and what implications follow for belonging and participation. Using a qualitative descriptive design, we analysed interviews, focus group discussions, non-participant observations, and institutional documents. Participants were purposively selected to reflect diverse nationalities. Data were coded iteratively and thematically, with triangulation, peer debriefing, and reflections supporting trustworthiness. Findings show a three-channel ecosystem: formal curriculum linking theology, ethics, and jurisprudence to daily practice; extracurricular platforms (study circles and service) translating principles into action; and institutional culture embedding value-bearing routines. Four conditions influenced value formation: cultural diversity and peer interaction, dialogic pedagogy, institutional support systems, and language proficiency. These dynamics yielded transformative outcomes moral resilience in addressing dilemmas, social cohesion through a shared moral vocabulary of justice, compassion, and responsibility, and intercultural competence oriented to global citizenship. The study refines an integrative framework connecting curricular, co-curricular, and cultural channels to value internalization and identifies practical levers for inclusive design. Future research should test these pathways longitudinally and across Islamic university traditions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of students’ religious character through the routine practice of congregational zuhur prayer at SMK Muhammadiyah Sumowono, Semarang Regency. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the routine practice of congregational zuhur prayer, implemented in a structured and consistent manner, plays an effective role in shaping students’ religious character, particularly in aspects of discipline, compliance with rules, and religious awareness within the school environment. Daily habituation of worship encourages the internalization of religious values, which is reflected in changes in students’ behavior, such as readiness to perform prayers without teacher instruction and increased responsibility in carrying out religious obligations. The success of religious character formation is supported by synergy among the school, teachers, parents, and the availability of adequate and sustainable worship facilities. Thus, the routine practice of congregational zuhur prayer functions not only as a ritual obligation but also as an instrument of religious character education in Islamic-based vocational high schools. Keywords : Religious Character, Routine Practices, Congregational Zuhur Prayers.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychological characteristics of the Children of Israel as described in the Qur'an through an analysis of Sayyid Qutb's Fi Zilal al-Qur'an, with a focus on collective behavior patterns and historical factors that shaped their characteristics, such as rebelliousness, materialistic tendencies, racial arrogance, inconsistency in faith, and dependence on worldly power. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach, combining thematic analysis of Qur'anic verses and a psychological-historical approach to understand their psychological dynamics in the context of oppression and liberation. The results of the study show that, according to Sayyid Qutb, the character of the Children of Israel was the result of collective trauma caused by slavery in Egypt, which gave rise to spiritual inferiority, defiance of God's commands, and a materialistic orientation that shifted divine values. racial and intellectual arrogance reflects a deviation in understanding the concept of the “chosen people,” while inconsistency in faith represents spiritual hypocrisy that weakens monotheism. Qutb viewed this pattern as a universal phenomenon that serves as a warning to all of humanity not to get caught up in formal religious practices without spiritual depth. The main value of this research lies in its contribution to enriching thematic interpretation studies through a psychological-historical approach, emphasizing the relationship between human inner conditions and historical experiences in the formation of religious character, and encouraging Muslims to cultivate authentic, humble faith oriented towards the mandate of revelation, rather than outward symbols or claims of group superiority.
