Abstract

Zakat, as an Islamic social financial instrument, has great potential in poverty alleviation and improving social welfare. However, the gap between the potential and realization of zakat collection is still significant. This study aims to evaluate the zakat management policy framework in the context of social welfare using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with the PRISMA approach. Of the 64 articles identified in the Scopus database, 35 articles met the inclusion criteria for in-depth analysis. The review results revealed seven main themes: regulatory and legal framework, governance and management, technological innovation, distribution and empowerment strategies, public awareness and education, interinstitutional collaboration, and impact measurement and evaluation. The findings indicate that effective zakat management requires a holistic approach, including legal harmonization, managerial professionalism, technology adoption, innovative distribution models, public education, inter-institutional synergy, and a comprehensive evaluation system. This study recommends policy reforms that include improving regulations, standardizing management, integrating technology, developing empowerment programs, digital-based education campaigns, strengthening collaboration, and developing an evaluation framework integrated with the SDGs. The implementation of these recommendations is expected to optimize the role of zakat in improving social welfare in the digital era.

Abstract

Non-Performing Financing (NPF) is financing that does not comply with the initial contract schedule, causing disruption to the cash flow of Islamic microfinance institutions. The average Non-Performing Financing (NPF) of Islamic Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in 2023 reached 13.09%. The urgency of this study reveals that Islamic MFIs or popularly called as Baitul Maal wa Taamwil (BMT) can be an alternative platform to enhance financial inclusion since they reach out even remote areas. However, NPF is often a problem faced by BMT. The purpose of this study is to analyse the issue of NPF in Islamic MFIs in Indonesia. The study also examines strategies to address issue of NPF in Islamic MFIs in Indonesia. To achieve the research objectives, the method used is through a qualitative approach with Analytic Network Process (ANP) used to be as analysis technique. Primary data sources were obtained through forum group discussions (FGDs) and pair-wise questionnaires and interviews with 10 respondents who are considered experts in related fields. The results of this study indicate that based on the ANP results internal management issue as main problem that causes NPF occur, followed by internal human resource issues, debtor/customer issues and regulatory issues. Main priority of the settlement strategy of NPF include strategy of improving internal management by improving internal human resources, then increasing sharia literacy, and government policy. The study suggests as the issues on internal management is in top rank, the Islamic MFIs should improve internal management elements including enhancing accountability and conducting professional administration.

Abstract

Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide have been widely studied as a biomass-sourced alternative to graphene for their various capabilities, e.g. as adsorbent. This publication reports the preparation of graphite (g), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) from coconut shell (1) and sugarcane bagasse (2) using matoa leaves extract as reducing agent, characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The X-ray diffractogram showed 2θ peaks between 22.8°–23.8° for g1, GO1, and rGO1, and between 23.6°–25.8° for g2, GO2, and rGO2. FT-IR spectra of both sets of GO and rGO showed common peaks of O–H (~3400 cm–1), C–H (~2900 cm–1), and C–OH (~1600 cm–1), while also some noticeable differences between the sets. Raman spectra of both rGO showed D peak (~1400 cm–1), G peak (~1700 cm–1), and weak 2D peaks (2700–3300 cm–1) with ID/IG of 0.93 and 0.91 for rGO1 and rGO2, respectively. The obtained g, GO, and rGO were used as adsorbent for methylene blue dye. The adsorption study involved variation in dye concentration, contact time, and amount of adsorbent. It was found that rGO performs best as adsorbent compared to GO and g, with maximum adsorption capacity of 22.308 μg/mg (rGO1) and 47.533 μg/mg (rGO2). Adsorbents prepared from sugarcane bagasse were found to perform better due to its easiness of carbonization compared to coconut shell.

Abstract

Ceftriaxone (CEF) is a β-lactam antibiotic widely used in the medical field to treat various bacterial infections in both humans and animals. The high usage of CEF has the potential to cause environmental pollution and antimicrobial resistance, necessitating effective treatment methods. In this study, the adsorption method is proposed using Ni/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Camellia sinensis extract-modified material (Ni/Al-CSe) as a sustainable bio-modification approach. The results show the optimal adsorption pH for Ni/Al LDH is 3 and for Ni/Al-CSe is 5, with the adsorption isotherms following the Freundlich model and the kinetics conforming to pseudo-first order (PFO). The maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) significantly increased from 28.818 mg.g-1 (Ni/Al LDH) to 111.111 mg.g-1 (Ni/Al-CSe). Thermodynamic analysis revealed that adsorption on both materials proceeds spontaneously, while the consistently more negative ΔG values and predominantly exothermic behavior of Ni/Al-CSe confirm its superior thermodynamic favorability associated with more specific surface interactions. Regeneration tests up to four cycles showed that Ni/Al-CSe was more stable than Ni/Al LDH. Overall, modifying Ni/Al LDH with Camellia sinensis extract was proven to enhance adsorption capacity, spontaneity, and stability, providing an effective and environmentally friendly solution for antibiotic treatment.
