Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common endocrine disease in domestic cats. Breed, sex, being overweight to an extent of obesity are predisposing factors for developing T2DM. One of the most common laboratory analyses conducted to confirm this disease is blood glucose concentrations. The aim of this research is to determine blood glucose concentration in domestic cats based on BCS, breed, and sex using a portable blood glucose meter. Research samples were obtained by taking blood samples from the marginal ear vein of 131 domestic cats that matched the sample's criteria, took at 2-hours post prandial, and drip onto the Sinocare strip. The results showed that the average blood glucose concentration was in the normal range, with a total of ideal (BCS ≥3/5) domestic cats (n=43) was 75.74 mg/dL, overweight (BCS ≥4/5) domestic cats (n=44) was 78.23 mg/dL, obese (BCS ≥5/5) domestic cats (n=44) was 89.66 mg/dL, male (n=51) was 80.57 mg/dL, female (n=80) was 81.69 mg/dL, Mixed Breed (n= 119) was 81.03 mg/dL, Angora (n=5) was 84.20 mg/dL, Persian (n=6) was 81.50 mg/dL and Ragdoll (n=1) was 92 mg/dL. Pearson correlation showed BCS (r=0.403; p= 0.000) had a moderate, positive, and significant correlation with blood glucose concentration in domestic cats. Meanwhile, the results of Kendall's Tau correlation showed that breed (p=0.740) and sex (p=0.555) had insignificant correlation with blood glucose concentration in domestic cats.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the reproductive performance of the Ongole cross (PO) and Ongole-Limousin cross (Limpo) on smallholder farmer in Bekri district, Central Lampung regency, Lampung province, a Indonesia. This study used 30 PO cows, 30 Limpo F1 (first filial) cows and 30 Limpo F2 cows. Sample cows had at least two parities and had never had a history of reproductive disorders. This study used primary and secondary data related to sample cows. Primary data was obtained from interviews with farmers and secondary data was obtained from the Department of Plantations, Livestock and Fisheries of Central Lampung regency, and inseminator recording. Data were described descriptively and analyzed using a one-way Analysis of Variance in Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) version 23. The result showed that the services per conception of Limpo F2 cows was higher (p <0.05) than for PO and Limpo F1 cows. Days open and calving interval for Limpo cows (F1 and F2) were longer (p <0.05) than for PO cows. Days open and calving interval for Limpo F1 cows were not significantly different (p >0.05) than for Limpo F2 cows. Reproductive performance of PO cows was better compared to Limpo F1 and Limpo F2 cows. However, there was a data discrepancy between reproductive performance and data on rearing systems, feed quality, and signs of estrus observed by farmers. It could be concluded that PO cows had better reproductive performance than Limpo cows.

Abstract

One of the viruses that can cause disease in cats is feline coronavirus (FCoV). This virus is often divided into type I and type II. Type I is a highly pathogenic strain, feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). Type II is a milder strain, feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). The FIPV variant is said to be a result of a mutation from FECV. FIP disease is responsible for 0.3%-1.4% of cat deaths in veterinary clinics. This study aims to determine if there is an FIPV in imported cats at Soekarno Hatta Airport, Indonesia. Samples were taken from 15 imported cats from Russia and Vietnam. These two countries were chosen based on previously unreported cases. The samples, consisting of blood and rectal swabs, were tested molecularly using RT-PCR. Four samples from rectal swabs showed positive results with a single band at 677 bp. Two positive samples, namely 123v and 682v, were further sequenced. The study results indicate that the FCoV virus can be found in asymptomatic imported cats. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanism causing genetic diversification of FCoV or FIPV and its impact on the pathogenesis of FIP. Furthermore, the application of FIP vaccines from other countries should be tested for compatibility with the FIPV strains present in Indonesia.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 requires effective vaccines to be developed. This study aimed to assess the impact of a SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate in k18-hACE2 mice by monitoring their body weight, immune activation, and inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. The study utilized k18-hACE2 mice expressing the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) receptor. The mice were administered the inactivated vaccine candidate compared with sham and vehicle. Body weight was monitored, and serum samples were collected to measure IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels using ELISA. Data were evaluated using SPSS statistical analysis software. The administration of the SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate in k18-hACE2 mice did not result in significant changes in body weight compared to the control group. Furthermore, the levels of IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ were significantly reduced in the vaccinated mice compared to the control group, suggesting a dampening effect on the inflammatory response. This study demonstrates that the SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate has a minimal impact on the body weight of k18-hACE2 mice. Nevertheless, it successfully regulates the levels of IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, suggesting its safety and beneficial impact. These findings contribute to understanding the vaccine's efficacy and safety profile in vaccine development.

Abstract

Rabbit as a laboratory animals play an important role in bridging basic research to clinical application. The exploration of rabbit mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) is still facing an obstacle regarding the standardization of characterization of MSC. This study is aimed to explore the novel candidate of rabbit MSC surface marker as an effort to establish the goal standardization of rabbit MSC. Three 2-month-old male White New Zealand rabbits weighing 2 kg were used as visceral rabbit adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell (Rab-ADMSC) donors. The cells were characterized according to their morphology characteristic, clonogenic and three-lineage differentiation capacity. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the MSC surface markers of Rab-ADMSC against CD81, CD29, CD34 and CD45. The results of this study revealed that the Rab-ADMSC posses characteristic of MSC according to their morphology and differentiation capacity. It can be concluded that CD81 surface marker can be proposed as a stable alternative candidate marker for rabbit MSCs. This data is supported by other phenotypic characteristics of MSCs, both in morphology and in the ability of visceral Rab-ADMSCs to differentiate into adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineages.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the elderly population is steadily increasing, and dementia is emerging as a significant public health concern. A lack of awareness regarding dementia prevention, particularly through nutrition-based interventions such as increased fish consumption, remains a major issue. This community service program aimed to educate fishermens wives and elderly residents by promoting the processing of fishery products, especially fish and shellfish, into various nutritious food products as a preventive measure against dementia. The program was implemented in Bulak, a coastal area of Surabaya, Indonesia, targeting fishermens wives and elderly community members through the Dudu Galak Program. The initiative focused on innovating the processing of local marine products into both dry and wet foods that are not only nutritionally rich but also economically valuable. The methods employed included educational outreach, hands-on training, and mentoring in the development of diverse, nutritious, and marketable seafood-based products. Additionally, the program provided education on dementia in older adults and strategies for its prevention. The results of this initiative demonstrated that fishermens wives and elderly residents successfully developed a variety of high-nutrition fish- and shellfish-based foods and snacks with promising market potential. Moreover, participants gained a better understanding of dementia and recognized that increasing fish consumption can serve as an effective preventive strategy. Through this program, it is expected that participants will improve their household income, enhance their knowledge of dementia, and promote greater fish consumption within fishing families as part of dementia prevention efforts among the elderly.
