Abstract

This research explores the dynamics of loanwords in modern Arabic, particularly in the fields of technology and science. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study identifies the types of loanwords, the mechanisms of linguistic adaptation, and their impact on Arabic usage. Data were collected through analyzing dictionaries and scientific articles. The findings show that borrowing words from English, such as "computer" and "internet", enriches Arabic vocabulary and facilitates communication in international contexts. The adaptation process involves transliteration, phonological modification, and combining native words with loan words. However, this phenomenon presents a challenge to language scholars who are concerned about the loss of authenticity of Arabic. The study concludes that word borrowing is an integral part of the dynamic and adaptive evolution of the Arabic language, reflecting the ongoing social, economic, and cultural changes in the Arab world.

Abstract

Highway infrastructure development faces significant challenges due to unstable soil conditions, which can lead to ground settlement and structural failures. One effective soil improvement method is Deep Soil Mixing (DSM), which integrates native soil with binding materials like cement to enhance load-bearing capacity. This study aims to analyze the influence of cement composition and curing duration on Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) in the DSM method and examine the correlation between soil parameters and stabilization outcomes. The tests were conducted with cement variations of 175 kg/m³ and 200 kg/m³ and curing durations of 7, 14, and 28 days. The results indicate that increasing cement composition significantly enhances UCS, with the 200 kg/m³ composition achieving the highest UCS of 2.10 MPa at 28 days. Additionally, UCS values from full-scale DSM work exhibited an increasing trend with curing time, with STA 17+450 recording the highest value of 2.47 MPa. Correlation analysis revealed that qc values from cone penetration tests positively correlated with UCS, whereas Plasticity Index (PI) and Fine Content showed negative correlations. Thus, DSM has proven to be an effective technique for stabilizing soft soils, and understanding soil characteristics plays a crucial role in optimizing this stabilization process.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTS- Differences in river hydraulic characteristics affect ecological river health- The influence of flooding on the dynamics of physical and chemical characteristics of river water- Life strategy, adaptation of periphyton to environmental changes- Development of green infrastructure for river conservationABSTRACTBelik River is one of the urban rivers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta which has hydrological problems both in quantity and quality. This triggered the construction of various types of channel modifications. This study aimed to identify water quality and the ecological effects of channel modifications based on the presence of periphyton communities as bioindicators. Sampling was carried out in January 2021 and March 2021. Samples were taken at 4 sampling sites with different channel characteristics with 3 repetitions at each location. The physico-chemical parameters measured included pH, detergent, nitrate, sulfate, total phosphate, TSS, TDS, DO, CO2, water temperature, depth, transparency, discharge, and current velocity. The results showed that the abundance of periphyton in January 2021 was higher than in March 2021. In January 2021 there were found 91 periphyton species dominated by Nitzschia improvisa, Nitzschia terricola, and Nitzschia philippinarum. Meanwhile, in March 2021 there were found 61 species of periphyton dominated by Nitzschia improvisa. Based on the results of Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), it was shown that in general the distribution and abundance of periphyton in the Belik River were influenced by CO2, total phosphate, discharge, DO, nitrate, TSS, and depth. The Shannon Wiener Diversity Index showed that water quality in January 2021 has decreased in March 2021. From the cluster analysis, it is known that there are differences in water quality and abundance of periphyton in the four types of river channels. It can be concluded that differences in hydraulic characteristics affected water quality and the ecological health of Belik River.

Abstract

The development of micro-scale renewable energy power generation systems, such as micro-hydropower (MHP), often needs more consideration for sustainability during the planning stages. Many small-scale renewable energy systems have shorter-than-expected lifespans, jeopardizing Indonesia's Net Zero Emission Target for 2060 or earlier. Despite this, only some studies have examined the long-term viability of installed renewable energy generation projects, particularly MHP plants not managed by state-owned companies or PLN (Pembangkit Listrik Negara). The primary objectives of this research are to evaluate the feasibility of retrofitting and assess the potential sustainability of a decommissioned MHP in Banjarnegara, Central Java. A cash flow analysis was performed to assess techno-economic indicators. Additionally, the social-institutional dimension was analyzed through in-depth interviews with 15 stakeholders. Sustainability was evaluated using a framework of 15 indicators across technical, economic, environmental, social, and institutional dimensions. The findings revealed that among the four sustainability aspects, the social-institutional dimension scored the lowest potential sustainability at 26.67%. In contrast, the technical and environmental dimensions showed higher potential sustainability, scoring 83.7% and 87.5%, respectively. The economic dimension was deemed feasible only when the financing model accounted solely for retrofitting costs. It is crucial to consider all dimensions comprehensively. Furthermore, engaging multiple stakeholders and fostering local community awareness is vital to ensure the long-term sustainability of decentralized energy systems. This study enhances the understanding of the sustainability potential of abandoned decentralized energy systems and explores how reusing abandoned MHP facilities can support stakeholders in revitalization efforts, contributing to an increased share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix.

Abstract

Kufa is one of the strategic cities in the history of Islamic civilization that has made a great contribution to the development of hadith science. Founded during the time of Caliph Umar bin al-Khattab, Kufa developed into an intellectual center inhabited by companions and tabi'in, as well as an important arena for the transmission and study of hadith. This city is not only known as the location of hadith narration, but also as a place for the growth of various schools of fiqh and theological thought that influenced the formation of Islamic scientific methodology. This research aims to examine the traces and dynamics of hadith narration in the Kufa madrasah, by tracing the contributions of scholars, the development of scientific institutions, and the influence of socio-political situations on the transmission of hadith. This study uses a qualitative approach with historical methods and literature analysis, focusing on classical sources and contemporary studies of the hadith and intellectual history of Kufa. The results of the study show that hadith madrassas in Kufah developed in a dynamic socio-political context and full of sectarian debates. Kufa scholars developed a rational and critical approach to the narration of hadith, which had a significant impact on the development of hadith science and fiqh thought. Political dynamics and the emergence of various schools of thought such as Shi'ah, Khawarij, and Ahlus Sunnah also shaped the plural and analytical scientific character of Kufa. Thus, the hadith madrassas in Kufa not only inherited a strong tradition of hadith transmission, but also made an influential methodological contribution to the history of Islamic science. This study emphasizes the importance of Kufa's position as the epicenter of hadith science that continues to have an impact on the development of Islamic studies to the present day.
