Abstract

Background: Problem - Based Learning (PBL) is a method of student-centered learning. In PBL, students become centered to the learning process, whereas the teacher is the center of learning in lecture-based learning (LBL). Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of PBL and LBL on students’ learning outcomes and satisfaction on an undergraduate nursing course. Methods: Quasi-experimental study. Participants included 161 students from two different classes of the course; in 2013, as a control group (n = 88) and in 2014 as an intervention group (n = 73). Both groups received LBL, which is practice in the lab and clinic, but the intervention group also received PBL. Secondary data analysis of students’ learning outcomes was measured using students’ learning progress in tests from lecture (theory, paper, laboratory, and clinical), while students’ satisfaction was measured using teaching method evaluation from students. Results: Students’ learning outcomes (theory, laboratory, and clinical) in the PBL group were significantly more than in the control group (p<0.001), whereas paper lesson outcomes were higher in control group compared to the intervention group (t=6.43; p<0.001; 95% CI=1.46-2.76). There was more satisfaction with the PBL method. There was no relationship between students’ satisfaction and learning outcomes (p>0.05). However, students considered greater satisfaction in PBL compared to LBL. Conclusions: In problem-based learning, students contributed a lot to solving the problem and getting the skills and knowledge they needed. Students are also expected to be motivated.

Abstract

The younger age of fathers will affect the pattern of relationship between fathers and their children, particularly in terms of nutrition provision of children under five years. The objective of this study was to identify and measure the correlation between the pattern of relationship between fathers and their children and nutritional status in Jember Regency of Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2019. The participants were 39 young fathers aged 17-19 years who have an infant aged 0-5 years. They were recruited using total sampling technique. Respondents’ characteristics and child-parent relationships were measured using a questionnaire. The Chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Among the 39 young fathers, the young father and children relationship was high (56.4%). Meanwhile, the nutritional status of children was good (48.7%). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the pattern of father-child relationship and nutritional status among the children (χ2= 11.83; p<0.001). The higher the pattern of father-child relationship, the better was the nutrition of the children (OR= 12.0; 95% CI= 2.5-57.4). The father-child relationship pattern is related to children’s nutritional status. Therefore, the fatherchild relationship should be well-maintained to fulfill the nutrition needs of under-five children.

Abstract

Hypertension in the elderly is a common problem that is often found. Many factors affect hypertension in the elderly, so it is necessary to empower them elderly. The purpose of this empowerment to control the blood pressure of the elderly through progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) techniques. The method used is counselling and exercise demonstration, which consists of 3 main activities: screening, PMR technique training, and activity evaluation. The empowerment was attended by nine elderly at UPT PSTW Wisma Cempaka Jember. The evaluation of activities is to measure blood pressure with a stethoscope and sphygmomanometer. Wilcoxon statistical test was used to determine changes in blood pressure before and after PMR intervention. The elderly are 100% male, 55.6% are 60-70 years old, 44.4% live in an orphanage for 1-5 years, and 66.7% are from outside Jember and have itching 44.4%. The p-value was 0.02<0.05 in systole, which means there was a difference before and after PMR, and the p-value was 0.705>0.05 in diastole, which means there was no difference in blood pressure after PMR. PMR focuses on maintaining a relaxed state that can secrete CRH (Corticotropin-releasing Hormone) and ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic releasing hormone) so that adrenaline and non-adrenaline secretion decrease, which has an impact on heart contraction activity and decreased blood pressure. Elderly empowerment with progressive muscle relaxation can control blood pressure, specifically systolic, after one week of exercise. This exercise must be included in the PSTW exercise program, which can be done regularly to control blood pressure.

Abstract

The elderly are at higher risk of developing various degenerative diseases. Hypertension is often called the "Silent Killer", which can unwittingly cause death due to complications without proper treatment. Therefore, hypertension health education is expected to increase knowledge of the elderly, and hypertension exercise training can help reduce complications. This community service program aims to increase the elderly's knowledge of hypertension and be able to apply the hypertension exercise method at Wisma Cempaka UPT PSTW Jember. The community service method uses a gerontic nursing care approach which includes various stages, namely an initial survey related to hypertension through blood pressure checks in the elderly, then carrying out hypertension counseling with counseling methods and interactive discussions, then continuing with training on how to apply hypertension exercise by students and a joint demonstration with the Wisma elderly. Cempaka UPT PSTW Jember. The results of this activity indicate an increase in knowledge among the elderly regarding hypertension from 42% to 75% at the end of the activity. The average decrease in elderly blood pressure is ten mmHg in systolic and five mmHg in diastole after exercise hypertension for three consecutive days. This proves the importance of health education and training in the form of hypertension exercise to be carried out continuously in controlling blood pressure and minimizing the risk of hypertension complications in the elderly. Therefore, monitoring of exercise training and sustainable hypertension health education is expected to be continued regularly to maintain the health of the elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Low family nutrition awareness will have an impact on nutritional problems in family members. Mothers as the main caregivers in the family are very decisive in the problem of stunting in children under five. This study was to describe the validity of Nutritional Awareness of Family Questionnare (NAF-Q) that measures level of awareness of family to prevent stunting children. Methods: A cross-sectional study of Panti (Indonesian) was conducted among parents with stunting under five children (n = 167). Multifactors NAF-Q were examined using content validity (Content Validity Index [CVI]). Internal consistency was explored using Cronbach’s α coefficient. Results: The CVI indicated adequate content validity (0.80–1.00) and acceptable internal consistency (0.896). Conclusions: NAF-Q contains valid, reliable, and robust measures although some subscales performed high reliability, establishing the purpose for further research.

Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. COPD causes various physical disorders, including dyspnea, physical weakness, and psychological disturbances that can impact the quality of life. This study aims to identify patients' quality of life and the factors influencing it. Methods: The method of this study is a systematic review using the PRISMA JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. The literature search used an electronic database of 3 electronic databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria include research on the quality of life of patients with COPD and articles published in English from 2018 – 2023. Data were analyzed using meta-synthesis. Results: The results of the study found 12 eligible articles. The analysis results show that the dominant factors affecting the quality of life of COPD patients are smoking status, degree of COPD, and depression. Active smoking status, severe COPD, and depression can worsen the quality of life. Family support, self-care management education, and medication adherence can improve quality of life. Family support is central because it can improve compliance and self-care management. Conclusion: Nurses' efforts to improve the quality of life of COPD patients, apart from being curative, can be carried out through preventive and promotive actions, including smoking cessation programs, increasing medication adherence, and improving self-care management through efforts to increase family social support.
