Abstract

The development of the digital era has accelerated the dissemination of cultural information, including oral traditions, which are an important heritage of the Lampung people. One distinctive oral tradition that has received attention is memmang, a form of spell steeped in magical and spiritual values. This study aims to describe the existence of the memmang tradition in Lampung society, uncover its function and meaning, and preserve its preservation amidst the dynamics of modernization and globalization. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and document analysis, including traditional manuscripts as the primary source. The results show that memmang plays a central role in the social life and beliefs of the Lampung people, but is facing a decline in function due to changes in social values, religious influences, and minimal regeneration from the younger generation. Nevertheless, this tradition is still preserved to a limited extent by several communities through oral inheritance and written documentation. This study emphasizes the importance of documentation efforts, cultural education, and the use of digital technology so that the memmang oral tradition can continue to live and be relevant in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review the development of poetry literature e-modules that integrate social analysis in literary learning, with a specific focus on the poem Pulang by Isbedy Stiawan Z.S. The research is motivated by the dominance of poetry e-modules that emphasize structural and aesthetic elements while neglecting the social realities and ideological contexts represented in literary texts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this study analyzed scholarly articles, theses, dissertations, and academic books related to e-module development, poetry learning, and social analysis in literature. Data were collected from national and international academic databases using predefined keywords and selection criteria. The findings reveal that most existing poetry e-modules focus on form-based appreciation, technological innovation, and local wisdom, but rarely integrate explicit social analysis addressing issues such as marginalization, poverty, and social inequality. This gap indicates the need for e-modules that position poetry as a medium for critical reflection and social awareness. Based on the review, this study proposes a conceptual direction for developing a poetry e-module on Pulang that integrates sociological and critical literacy approaches to enhance students’ social literacy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. The study concludes that poetry e-modules grounded in social analysis are essential to support meaningful, contextual, and transformative literature learning aligned with 21st-century educational demands.

Abstract

This study investigates the attitudes of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students toward the use of local languages in daily life and learning environments within the multilingual context of Lampung, Indonesia. Despite Indonesia’s linguistic diversity, empirical evidence on language attitudes and local language shift at the university level remains limited, particularly in non-metropolitan regions. Adopting a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 54 undergraduate EFL students through open- and closed-ended questionnaires. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to represent diverse ethnic backgrounds. The data were analyzed thematically through coding and pattern identification, supported by descriptive statistics. The findings indicate a strong dominance of Bahasa Indonesia as the primary language of communication and perceived mother tongue, even among students from Lampungese and Javanese backgrounds. Local language proficiency was generally low, with many students demonstrating only passive understanding or no proficiency at all. Although participants expressed positive attitudes toward the cultural importance of local languages, actual use was constrained by limited intergenerational transmission, low social prestige, and the influence of globalization. This study highlights ongoing local language shift among university EFL learners and underscores the need for educational strategies that integrate local languages into formal learning contexts to support linguistic diversity and cultural sustainability.

Abstract

Objective: Abstract This study aims to uncover the moral values and forms of local wisdom contained in Pepaccur, a form of oral literature of the Lampung people that serves as a medium for conveying advice, communication, and social ethical guidelines. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a sociology of literature approach, this study examines several Pepaccur texts obtained through documentation and interviews with cultural practitioners. The analysis focused on identifying the moral values emerging in these oral expressions and their relationship to the Lampungnese philosophy of life, Piil Pesenggiri. The results reveal that Pepaccur encompasses moral values of piety to God, politeness, social solidarity, and wisdom in social interactions. These values reflect elements of local wisdom such as nemui nyimah (love), nengah nyappur (grace), sakai (grace), and juluk adek (dear sister), which serve as ethical guidelines for the Lampung people in maintaining social harmony and order. Thus, Pepaccur is not only a form of oral art but also a cultural representation that serves to preserve and transmit moral values between generations

Abstract

This study examines the role of1 greetings in shaping social identity, building a sense of group unity, and creating harmony among 2people in Lampung and Komering communities. In this context, greetings not only serve as conversation starters but also as tools to strengthen cultural rules, social hierarchical structures, and community integration in the Lampung region. This study uses a communication ethnography and discourse analysis approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with local residents, and text analysis of daily interactions. The results show that in Lampung society, greetings tend to be formal and hierarchical, such as using the words "Pak" or "Bu" to show respect, while in Komering society, greetings are more free and emphasize equality and familiarity to strengthen relationships within the extended family. The constructive function of these greetings is seen in efforts to preserve traditions, reduce conflict, and adapt to changing times. This study helps to better understand Indonesian language culture and suggests steps to preserve traditional greetings so that they are not eroded by the impact of globalization.

Abstract

Piil Pesenggiri is a philosophy of life that contains the values of local wisdom of the Lampung people, including moral, social, and cultural principles that regulate individual, family, and community relationships. In facing the currents of globalization that bring rapid change and the challenges of cultural homogenization, Piil Pesenggiri plays a role as a basis for cultural resilience by maintaining the identity, norms, and traditions typical of Lampung alive and passed down. This study explores the concept, function, and relevance of Piil Pesenggiri in maintaining social and cultural integrity amidst the dynamics of changing times. Qualitative methods with an ethnographic approach are used to examine the practice and meaning of Piil Pesenggiri among the Lampung people. The results of the study indicate that this philosophy strengthens social solidarity and becomes a mechanism for adaptation and protection of cultural values, thereby strengthening cultural resilience in facing the challenges of globalization.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the Buharak tradition among the Lampung Saibatin community as a form of cultural preservation in the Lampung Pesisir region. Buharak is a wedding procession held after the marriage ceremony with the aim of introducing the couple to the community while affirming the honor of the family and social status in the Saibatin customary system. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with in-depth interview techniques, participatory observation, and documentation studies of traditional leaders, ritual performers, and coastal communities. Data analysis is carried out through a thematic approach with stages of reduction, categorization, and interpretation of meaning. The results show that Buharak has three main functions: as a social glue that strengthens community solidarity and mutual cooperation (sakai sambayan); as a marker of status and customary legitimacy that reflects the hierarchical social structure of the Saibatin community; and as an arena for negotiating modernity, where the younger generation and religious leaders adapt traditional practices to align with Islamic norms and current socio-economic conditions. This adaptation is evident in the simplification of the duration of the procession, reduction of costs, integration of religious elements, and digital documentation that expands the scope of cultural preservation.

Abstract

Lampung language is currently experiencing a decline in usage, increasingly being supplanted by other languages. This trend can be attributed to students' waning interest in learning Lampung, which is partly due to the lack of innovative teaching approaches. Additionally, the complexity of Lampung pronunciation, further complicated by the existence of Dialect A and Dialect O, presents another challenge. To address these issues, there is a need for accessible and easy-to-use audio-visual media, particularly those focused on folklore, which can be widely utilized by educators. This study employed a comparative descriptive approach to investigate the impact of folklore-based audio-visual media on students' proficiency in Lampung pronunciation. The research instruments included an observation sheet—designed by the researchers to assess students' pronunciation abilities—and an interview guide to gather insights into students' learning experiences and teachers' perspectives on the instructional process. The findings indicate that the implementation of folklore-based audio-visual media offers significant benefits in enhancing students' pronunciation skills in Lampung. This media aids students in understanding correct pronunciation, boosts learning motivation, increases self-confidence, and improves communication skills. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to select appropriate media tailored to students' proficiency levels and ensure that its use aligns with specific learning objectives to maximize educational outcomes.
