Abstract

The application of PBL-STEM can encourage students to be independent in the learning process and emphasize the process of thinking critically and analytically to seek and find answers to a problem in question. This study used a true–experimental design with the Posttest Only Control Design type. The population in this study were all students of class XI SMA Kristen Sunodia Samarinda for the academic year 2022/2023 divided into 2 classes. This study aims to determine the effect of PBL-STEM in improving students' critical thinking skills. Sampling was done by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to measure students' critical thinking skills in chemistry were post-test questions, teacher and student observation sheets, and student response sheets (questionnaire). Data analysis was performed by t-test. The results of the t-test with Mann-Whitney obtained sig. (2-tailed) in both classes is 0.00 <0.05, it is concluded that Ha accepted the statement that there is an effect of the application of PBL-STEM on the critical thinking skills of class XI students at Christian Senior High School Sunodia Samarinda regarding reaction rates. The results of the teacher and student activity sheets in the experimental class were both in very good categories, as well as the student response to PBL-STEM learning, namely 77.2% of students agreed with the application of PBL-STEM in learning which can train students' critical thinking skills. This research discusses the analysis of how effective the influence of PBL and STEM integration is to improve critical thinking skills on reaction rate material so that this research can be used as a reference for applying PBL-STEM to other chemistry topics.

Abstract

The high prevalence of breast cancer necessitates the discovery of new, more effective, and safer anticancer compounds. Chalcone, a flavonoid with promising anticancer activity, is limited by poor bioavailability and rare natural occurrence. In this study, a novel chalcone derivative, 5'-chloro-2',4-dihydroxy-3-methoxychalcone, was synthesized on a laboratory scale via Claisen-Schmidt condensation using 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde as starting materials. The structure of the synthesized compound was confirmed by mass spectrometry and NMR analysis. Pharmacokinetic and toxicity profiles were predicted in silico using SwissADME, while molecular docking simulations with the ERα receptor were performed using AutoDockTools. The compound was obtained as a yellow solid with a yield of 70.15%, showed favorable ADME properties based on Lipinski’s and Veber’s rules, and demonstrated a binding energy of -7.82 kcal/mol to the ERα receptor, indicating potential as an anticancer agent. The novelty of this research is the successfully synthesized and characterized of this specific chalcone, which is structurally different from previously reported analogs. These findings enrich the diversity of chalcone derivatives and provide a new basis for developing synthesis-based drug candidates targeting breast cancer.

Abstract

The low collaboration skills of students are due to the less-than-optimal role of the teacher in fostering interpersonal skills and cooperation in the classroom. Selecting an appropriate learning model is key to effectively enhancing students' collaboration skills. Therefore, the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) learning model optimizes students' collaboration skills. This study aims to determine the effect of the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) model on students' collaboration skills in elements, compounds, and mixtures. The approach employed is a quasi-experimental design utilizing a non-equivalent control group format. All 8th-grade junior high school students in Samarinda for the 2023/2024 academic year served as the population in this study. Class VIII A was assigned as the experimental group, whereas Class VIII B was the control group. The sample was selected using purposive sampling based on the subject teacher’s considerations, including classroom participation, group collaboration, and peer interaction. The instrument used was a collaboration skills questionnaire consisting of 25 statement items, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale. Data collection was also carried out using an observation sheet developed based on the indicators of collaboration skills. The data were analyzed descriptively after being collected through observations and collaboration skill questionnaires. The findings indicated that the experimental group achieved a higher average score than the control group, indicating that the CPS model syntax positively improved students' collaboration skills.

Abstract

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) seeds have long been utilized in traditional medicine due to their potential therapeutic properties. This study aimed to determine the secondary metabolite profile, toxicity, and antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract and ethyl acetate fraction of rambutan seeds to strengthen their potential application in traditional medicine. The powdered of rambutan seed was extracted with a maceration technique using methanol, followed by fractionation using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction were tested for toxicity using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) and for antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Phytochemical screening was performed using standard qualitative method to identify secondary metabolites, which confirmed the presence of phenols, tannins, and flavonoids in both samples. Toxicity testing indicated LCâ‚…â‚€ values of 688.86 ppm for the methanol extract and 825.68 ppm for the ethyl acetate fraction. Antioxidant activity assessment revealed ICâ‚…â‚€ values of 328.61 ppm for the methanol extract and the higher activity for ethyl acetate fraction of 32.78 ppm. These results indicate that the ethyl acetate fraction of rambutan seeds may serve as a promising natural source of antioxidants for therapeutic development.
