Abstract

Low-cost laboratory environments often constrain the development of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and limit the provision of formative feedback. This study examines the effect of simple ChatGPT-assisted Direct Current (DC) engineering experiments on HOTS and elucidates the scaffolding mechanisms involved. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design with a single-group pretest–posttest structure, thirty-four undergraduates completed two low-cost laboratory sessions where ChatGPT supported the validation of pre-experiment questions and the interpretation of measurement results. Quantitative data were obtained from constructed-response HOTS tests, complemented by structured interviews. Results show a substantial improvement (pretest M = 24.05 → posttest M = 56.87) and a sharp reduction in score dispersion (variance: 87.97 → 21.08; IQR: 12.20 → 3.20), indicating more homogeneous learning outcomes and a shift toward higher performance. Qualitative findings highlight two mechanisms: improved problem representation before experimentation and strengthened data–model reasoning afterward through rapid explanations and standardized procedures. Overall, the approach offers an affordable and scalable pathway for fostering HOTS through the integration of physical experimentation and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based scaffolding. Its implication is that integrating low-cost physical experiments with AI support can serve as a practical approach to enhancing HOTS in physics learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model integrated with STEM and infused with local Jambi (Malay) cultural content in enhancing students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in science education at MTS Bina Insan. An experimental design using a non-equivalent control group was employed, involving two classes—experimental and control—each comprising 13 students. The experimental group received instruction through the PjBL-STEM model incorporating local content, while the control group followed traditional methods. Both groups underwent pre-tests and post-tests. Data were analyzed using normality tests and independent t-tests. Pre-test and post-test data met the assumption of normality (p 0.05). An independent t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups (p 0.005), supporting the alternative hypothesis. The results suggest that the PjBL-STEM model, when contextualized with local Jambi culture, significantly enhances students' HOTS. The integration of cultural elements made the learning process more relevant and engaging, supporting deeper cognitive engagement. The study demonstrates that integrating local cultural content into STEM-based PjBL strategies effectively improves students’ higher-order thinking skills. This finding highlights the value of culturally responsive pedagogy in creating meaningful and contextually appropriate science education.

Abstract

Abstract

Misconceptions experienced by students must be identified, reduced, and remediated so that they do not become obstacles for students in their learning process. This study aims to reduce students' misconceptions about static fluids using interactive media developed using the Nearpod Platform based on Posner's conceptual change theory. The research design used was a one-group pre-test post-test design study, by conducting a pre-test, providing actions or treatments, and post-tests to 31 sample high school students. The test instruments and interactive media were first developed with a fairly strict validation process regarding content, construct, and face. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to measure the effectiveness of the learning platform in reducing misconceptions. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the application of the Nearpod interactive learning platform based on Posner's conceptual change theory can significantly reduce students' misconceptions of the material of hydrostatic pressure and Archimedes' law, with a decrease in the percentage of misconceptions from an average of 34.83% in the pretest to 18.06% in the posttest. Therefore, the Conceptual Change Text strategy through Nearpod media has effectively reduced misconceptions.

Abstract

Strengthening academic creativity is an urgent need in 21st-century physics education, which is characterized by complex challenges and global changes. This study aims to actualize ethnoscience as a contextual approach that can enhance student creativity through the integration of local cultural values into physics learning. Using a combined framework of Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and field surveys, this study analyzed 10 relevant articles and collected quantitative data from 50 high school students. Descriptive and inferential analysis results show that positive perceptions of ethnoscience-based learning (r = 0.472) and appreciation of local culture (r = 0.352) are significantly related to high levels of student academic creativity. In addition, linear regression results reveal that these two variables together explain 31.3% of the variance in student creativity. These findings indicate that physics learning based on local wisdom is not only culturally relevant but also pedagogically effective in encouraging creative, reflective, and contextual thinking. Therefore, future educational strategies need to consider ethnoscience as a core approach in the design of culture-based curricula.
