Abstract

Ulee Kareng District is the largest coffee powder producing area in Aceh. This success cannot be separated from the social network formed by coffee traders and consumers. This study aims to analyze the social network that occurs in Ulee Kareng coffee powder traders, namely Solong Coffee Powder, Said Ida Coffee Powder, and Kupi Ceeh23. This study was conducted in Ulee Kareng District and has a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. Furthermore, the data will be analyzed from data reduction, data presentation to drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that the social network that is formed is very good including 4 things, namely: 1. Strong network norms and density, 2. Strong ties and weak ties run continuously to help open new networks, 3. The role of active structural holes, and 4. The anchorage of non-economic actions to economic actions runs sustainably. Therefore, it can be concluded that the social network that has been formed in coffee traders in Ulee Kareng District is very good. Indirectly, this shows that there is very good social network management by coffee traders. It is hoped that the social network formed among these coffee traders can be an example for other coffee traders and the government to provide empowerment for coffee traders who do not yet have a social network like the network formed among coffee traders in Ulee Kareng District.

Abstract

This study examines the social and economic changes in Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra fishing communities, which have undergone transformation due to technological developments and market dynamics. The characteristics of fishermen in this area, who are generally still traditional, use small boats and simple fishing gear, have low incomes, and are highly dependent on marine catches, making them more vulnerable to economic change. Socially, changes can be seen from the shift in fishermen's work patterns, as they are starting to adapt to digital marketing and business diversification, such as switching to the tourism sector. Economically, adopting mobile phones and social media technology allows fishermen to sell their catch directly to a broader market without relying on intermediaries, even though competition is getting tougher. However, low involvement in fishing groups is still an obstacle to increasing their competitiveness. Through field observation and in-depth interviews, this study confirms that fishermen's success in dealing with change depends on their readiness to adapt.

Abstract

Stunting remains one of the most pressing nutritional challenges worldwide, including in Indonesia, which ranks second in Southeast Asia and fifth globally in terms of child stunting prevalence. In Aceh Besar District, the stunting rate has reached 16.2%, prompting the government to implement several intervention programs, including the Supplementary Feeding Program (PMT). This study aims to analyze the role of the PMT in reducing stunting in Gampong Tanjong Selamat. Using George Herbert Mead’s role theory as the analytical framework, this research adopts a qualitative case study approach. The data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants included PMT coordinators and cadres, parents of stunted children, as well as key informants such as the village head (Keuchik) and youth leader. The findings indicate that PMT cadres perform two essential roles: socialization and nutritional intervention. However, the implementation of the program faces several limitations, including inadequate timing of outreach activities, lack of interactive engagement during health education sessions, suboptimal nutritional content of the meals provided, and the absence of pediatric specialists in treating stunted children. The study concludes that while the PMT program contributes positively to addressing stunting, its overall impact is constrained by operational and structural gaps. Strengthened support from local health authorities and improved inter-sectoral coordination are needed to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of stunting eradication efforts in the region.

Abstract

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector in Gampong Iboih, Sabang City, has experienced a very encouraging recovery. This is marked by an increase in visits by both domestic and international tourists, as well as the winning of various awards at the national and ASEAN levels. This success is inseparable from the active involvement of the community in independently reviving tourism activities. This study aims to analyze community strategies in post-pandemic tourism development using a descriptive qualitative approach. Informants in this study included the Keuchik (village head), administrators of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), the Sabang City Tourism Office, local business actors, the general public, and domestic and international tourists. Data collection techniques were carried out through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that the strategies implemented by the Gampong Iboih community align with the four functions in Talcott Parsons' AGIL theory: adaptation, goal achievement, integration, and pattern maintenance. In terms of adaptation, the community is able to adapt to the needs and culture of tourists without losing their local identity. The development goal is reflected in efforts to make Iboih an orderly, friendly, and highly competitive tourist destination. Integration is evident in the synergy between business actors, the community, and the government in tourism management. Meanwhile, preservation of local culture is realized through the preservation of local culture, such as the Kenduri Laot tradition, education on traditional values, and enforcement of norms through a social approach. Thus, the community-based tourism development strategy in Gampong Iboih is not only practical but also reflects the successful application of AGIL theory as a social framework for sustainable and participatory tourism development.

Abstract

This study examines strategies to strengthen the self-reliance of smallholder coffee farmers in the Gayo Highlands, focusing on Bener Meriah and Central Aceh Regencies, which are recognized centers of Gayo Arabica coffee production. A strategic analysis approach was applied using the Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) and External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrices to assess farmers’ internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats. The IFE analysis produced a total score of 2.37, indicating a moderate level of internal capacity, driven by long experience in coffee cultivation, strong social cohesion, and favorable agro-climatic conditions. In contrast, the EFE score of 1.98 reflects a relatively weak ability to respond to external dynamics, including global price fluctuations, climate change impacts, and limited market access. Integrating these results into the Internal–External (IE) Matrix places smallholder coffee farmers in Quadrant VI, corresponding to a “Hold and Maintain” strategic posture. This position suggests that empowerment efforts should consolidate existing strengths while addressing vulnerabilities to external pressures. Recommended strategies include upgrading post-harvest technology, expanding direct market access, improving cooperative management, and strengthening climate resilience—steps expected to support sustainable coffee production, reduce dependence on intermediaries, and enhance the competitiveness of Gayo coffee in an increasingly dynamic global market.

Abstract

Coastal communities face challenges in carrying out their fishing activities due to climate variability. The negative impacts of climate variability hinder fishing communities from carrying out their daily routines. This research aims to provide a description of the fishing community's exposure to climate variability and analyze the forms of livelihood strategies implemented by the fishing community in dealing with climate variability. This research was conducted in the coastal area, precisely in Gampong Lhok Lamteungoh, Peukan Bada District, Aceh Besar Regency. Data collection was carried out through direct interviews and observations in the area where the fishing community lived, which was selected using purposive sampling. The research results showed that serious impacts were found due to climate variability on the fishing community in Gampong Lhok Lamteungoh, including: high rainfall, exposure to extreme winds, uncertain fishing seasons and vulnerable settlements due to being prone to flooding. Several forms of climate variability are detrimental to fishing communities in carrying out their activities. Therefore, in order for the fishing community to be able to maintain its existence, several forms of livelihood strategies are needed. The fishing community has developed several forms of livelihood strategies that are developed within the community, namely: intensification and extensification, livelihood diversification, and migration.  The research results show that developing this livelihood strategy is an alternative solution for fishing communities facing climate variability. It is hoped that the government can provide assistance and solutions for fishing communities, especially when climate variability hits them.

Abstract

Human life is inherently shaped by social interactions, and this is particularly evident in agricultural activities, where coffee farmers are closely linked to social relationships with toke (middlemen). In the context of coffee farming, farmers establish cooperative relationships with toke to market their crops. Additionally, farmers rely on various natural resources essential for sustaining their agricultural activities. Over time, this interaction evolves into a patron-client bond. This study aims to analyze and describe the development of patron-client relationships between coffee farmers in Panji Mulia I Village, Bukit District, Bener Meriah Regency. The research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, employing fieldwork to collect data. Methods of data collection included observations, interviews, and documentation, with purposive sampling techniques used to select the informants. The theoretical framework applied in this research is James C. Scott's Patron-Client theory. The findings indicate that the five forms of patron-to-client flows provided by toke to farmers include: basic subsistence livelihood, crisis subsistence guarantee, protection, brokerage and influence, and collective patron services. Furthermore, there is also a flow from clients to patrons, with farmers offering labor and expertise in support of toke’s activities. In conclusion, the patron-client relationship between toke and coffee farmers in Panji Mulia I Village is collaborative. This relationship creates a reciprocal bond that benefits both parties, built upon mutual trust and loyalty.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of climate variability and the adaptation strategies employed by fishing communities to sustain their livelihoods. The primary focus of the research is the fishing community in Gampong Alue Deah Teungoh, located in the Meraxa sub-district of Banda Aceh City, a coastal village predominantly inhabited by fisherfolk. A qualitative case study approach was used to explore this issue in depth. Findings reveal that the fishing community in Gampong Alue Deah Teungoh has developed a range of adaptation strategies in response to climate variability affecting their livelihood systems. These strategies are interpreted through Scoones’ Livelihood Framework, which includes livelihood engineering such as intensification and extensification (e.g., optimizing and expanding fishing crews), livelihood diversification (engaging in multiple income-generating activities), and spatial strategies (e.g., migration). Major climate-related challenges identified include changing rainfall patterns, high waves, coastal flooding, and unpredictable fishing seasons. These climate stressors have led to reduced fish catch and damage to coastal settlements. In response, the community has adopted sustainable coping mechanisms, such as aquaculture, coastal tourism initiatives, and the utilization of both economic and social assets. Environmentally friendly natural resource management, skills enhancement, and support from social networks also play significant roles in strengthening their resilience to climate change.

Abstract

This study explores local potential-based rural development in Saree Village, Aceh Besar District, Indonesia. Saree holds significant promise as an agrotourism destination rooted in conservation and education. The village is endowed with rich natural assets, including Pocut Meurah Intan Grand Forest Park, Mount Seulawah Agam and Seulawah Inong, and the Saree Elephant Training Center, all of which support the development of sustainable ecotourism. These advantages are complemented by the presence of an Agro Techno Park and an integrated farming system producing key commodities such as avocados, red chilies, and tomatoes. This qualitative descriptive research employed field observations, interviews with local stakeholders, and literature reviews to identify and analyze the village’s local potentials. The Business Model Canvas (BMC) was applied as an analytical framework to map out the integration of local resources into tourism-based economic development.  Economically, over 65% of Saree's population depends on the agricultural sector, supported by training institutions such as Agro Saree Aceh that promote sustainable and technology-based farming. Collaborative efforts among local communities, village-owned enterprises (BUMG), government agencies, and the private sector play a crucial role in shaping Saree as an educational tourism village. The findings indicate that local resources can be effectively transformed into community-based tourism products that generate income, enhance local capacity, and preserve environmental sustainability. Key success factors include digital marketing strategies, human resource development, and infrastructure improvement.
