Abstract

Introduction. Malnutrition remains a global public health concern with significant implications for young adults, including medical students who are exposed to high academic demands that may induce persistent stress and subsequently affect eating behavior and nutritional status. This study aimed to identify stress levels and nutritional status and to analyze the relationship between the two among preclinical medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Gorontalo State University. Methods. An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 191 respondents selected through total sampling. Stress levels were assessed using the Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ), while nutritional status was determined based on Body Mass Index (BMI) obtained from standard anthropometric measurements. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. Results. The results showed that most students experienced moderate stress levels (51.8%), with academic-related stressors being the most dominant, and the majority of respondents had normal nutritional status (56.5%). Bivariate analysis demonstrated no significant correlation between stress levels and nutritional status (r = −0.131; p = 0.071). Conclusion. In conclusion, stress levels were not significantly associated with nutritional status among preclinical medical students. Other factors, such as daily calorie intake, physical activity, sleep duration, and genetic or family history, may play a more prominent role in determining nutritional status. Nevertheless, stress management interventions and the promotion of healthy lifestyles remain important to support the overall well-being of medical students.

Abstract

Abstract

Changes in modern consumption patterns show a tendency toward low daily dietary fiber intake. One potential solution to increase fiber intake while utilizing agricultural waste is through the use of red dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus polyrhizus). The objective was to analyze the effect of dragon fruit peel extract concentration and fermentation duration on the functional properties of nat a from palm sap. The study used a complete randomized design (CRD) with multiple factors. Factor x was the concentration of dragon fruit peel extract at 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, and factor y was the fermentation duration at 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days, with each treatment repeated three times. Data analysis was performed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Significant differences between treatments were analyzed using DMRT. The results showed that the treatment with 40% dragon fruit peel extract concentration and a fermentation period of 14 days showed an increase in antioxidant response and good nutritional content with an antioxidant response of 110.5 ppm (moderate). There is an effect of concentration and fermentation duration on antioxidant response, fiber, thickness, pH, mold/yeast, and ALT, as indicated by a ρ value of 0.000 < α 0.05.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health burden, particularly in high-incidence countries such as Indonesia. The World Health Organization–recommended Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) strategy plays a crucial role in improving treatment success; however, patient adherence during the intensive phase of treatment remains a significant challenge. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the implementation of the DOTS strategy and adherence to anti-tuberculosis medication during the intensive phase among pulmonary TB patients in Bone Bolango Regency. This study employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 75 respondents were recruited using total sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis. The findings demonstrated significant associations between all DOTS components and treatment adherence, including government commitment (p = 0.006), microscopic examination (p = 0.003), treatment supervision (p = 0.000), drug availability (p = 0.002), and recording and reporting systems (p = 0.004). Treatment supervision was identified as the most dominant factor influencing adherence, with a p-value of 0.001 and an odds ratio (OR) of 0.133 (95% CI: 0.039–0.459). The implementation of the DOTS strategy is strongly associated with adherence to anti-tuberculosis medication during the intensive phase of treatment. Strengthening the role of treatment supervisors, ensuring consistent drug availability, and improving recording and reporting systems are essential to enhance treatment success.

Abstract

Adolescent nutritional status is an important indicator of health influenced by physical and psychosocial factors. In adolescence, academic stress and changes in eating behavior often contribute to the emergence of nutritional problems, both undernutrition and overnutrition. This condition is suspected to be related to stress levels and emotional eating behavior tendencies. This study aims to determine the relationship between stress levels and emotional eating behaviors with adolescent nutritional status at SMA Negeri 7 Gorontalo City. This study used a quantitative design with a cross sectional approach. The research sample amounted to 163 adolescents who were selected based on criteria, namely adolescents with a minimum level of stress in the mild category, not undergoing a diet program, and not having chronic diseases. Sample selection was taken using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling technique. This research instrument uses the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) questionnaire and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ). Bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between stress levels and nutritional status of adolescents (p-Value = 0.000). Meanwhile, there was a significant relationship between emotional eating behavior and adolescent nutritional status (p-Value = 0.000). It is hoped that it can be an information and evaluation material for adolescents, schools, and related parties in understanding the relationship between stress levels, emotional eating behaviors, and adolescent nutritional status. These findings can also serve as a basis for consideration in promotive and preventive efforts that focus on adolescent mental health and eating behavior in the school environment.
