Abstract

Disaster-prone regions require an education system that equips students with both scientific understanding and disaster preparedness. However, integration of disaster mitigation content into subject-specific learning, particularly physics, remains limited. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of physics teaching materials integrated with disaster mitigation education to enhance students’ disaster literacy skills. A mixed-method approach with an exploratory sequential design was employed. The development process followed the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate) to systematically design and implement teaching materials. The study was conducted in two high schools in South Lampung Regency, Lampung, Indonesia involving four classes (two experimental and two control groups) with a total of 128 students, consisting of 63 students in the experimental groups and 65 in the control groups. The T-test results show that the use of disaster mitigation-based teaching materials had a statistically significant effect on students' disaster literacy abilities, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05).  Furthermore, the results of the effect size analysis (Cohen’s d = 0.62 and 0.66) fall within the moderate category, confirming that this intervention had a significant impact on enhancing students’ disaster literacy skills related to disaster mitigation. The implementation of this teaching material not only enhances students’ understanding of physics concepts but also increases their awareness and preparedness for disasters, particularly around disaster literacy, making it a strategic innovation in disaster education. This research contributes significantly to the development of disaster education curricula in Indonesia, particularly within the context of physics education.

Abstract

Purpose – Advancements in digital learning require students to be adequately prepared both psychologically and technologically. However, students’ attitudes toward digital learning have not yet been systematically mapped using data-driven segmentation approaches. This study aims to classify university students based on similarities in their attitudes toward digital learning using the K-Means clustering algorithm and to identify the most influential dimensions distinguishing levels of digital readiness. Methods – This study employed an exploratory quantitative design using survey data collected from 469 university students. Clustering was conducted using the K-Means algorithm implemented in the Orange Data Mining application. Two variable schemes were compared: a limited scheme comprising four constructs (Psychological Traits, Growth Mindset, Learner Motivation & Engagement, and Digital Competence) and a full scheme including six constructs with the addition of Digital Readiness & Mindfulness and Student Satisfaction. Data were normalized using Min–Max normalization, and cluster quality was evaluated using the Silhouette Coefficient.Findings – Results indicate that both schemes consistently produced two optimal clusters representing students with high and low levels of digital learning readiness. The highest Silhouette Coefficient values were obtained at K = 2 for both schemes (0.335 for the limited scheme and 0.323 for the full scheme). Psychological Traits and Learner Motivation & Engagement emerged as the most significant differentiating dimensions between clusters, followed by Digital Competence.Research limitations – The findings are limited to self-reported data and a single institutional context, which may constrain generalizability. Additionally, the cross-sectional design does not capture changes in student attitudes over time.Originality – This study contributes a comparative clustering framework that integrates psychological, motivational, and technological dimensions to map digital learning readiness. The results provide a practical foundation for designing adaptive and personalized digital learning strategies based on student readiness profiles.

Abstract

Mathematics education has long been influenced by diverse learning theories that are frequently applied in isolation, leading to theoretical fragmentation in instructional design. This study addresses that gap by proposing the DECADE learning model as a theoretically integrated framework that systematically synthesizes cognitivism, constructivism, information processing theory, dual coding theory, and cognitive load theory within a coherent instructional architecture. The study aims to establish the epistemological foundation and structural validity of this multi-theory integration in the context of mathematics education. Employing a mixed-method developmental design, qualitative thematic analysis was conducted to map the five theoretical foundations into a progressive six-phase instructional structure, followed by quantitative expert judgment to assess content and construct validity. The results demonstrate strong conceptual stability, with mean validity indices exceeding 90% of the ideal score, indicating high alignment between theoretical rationale, instructional syntax, and structural coherence. Rather than claiming empirical effectiveness, this study confirms the theoretical and structural feasibility of DECADE as an expert-validated framework. The findings contribute to mathematics education by offering a principled synthesis that bridges constructivist meaning construction and cognitive regulation, thereby providing a consolidated theoretical foundation for future empirical investigation and instructional innovation.
