Abstract

The ability to represent mathematical ideas is a fundamental component of mathematical understanding and communication. However, many students still struggle to express mathematical concepts in varied forms such as visual, symbolic, or verbal representations. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Meaningful Instructional Design (MID) learning model in improving students’ mathematical representation skills, while also considering the role of students’ cognitive styles. A quasi-experimental research design was implemented involving two groups: an experimental group taught using the MID model and a control group taught using conventional expository methods. The participants were selected using a cluster random sampling technique from a population of junior high school students. Data were collected through a validated mathematical representation test and a cognitive style questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed using two-way ANOVA with a 5 percent level of significance, following prerequisite tests for normality and homogeneity using SPSS version 25 and Microsoft Excel. The results showed that students who learned through the MID model exhibited significantly higher mathematical representation skills than those taught using the expository model. Furthermore, students’ cognitive styles also had a significant main effect on their representation abilities. Despite these main effects, the interaction between the learning model and cognitive style was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that the MID model is a robust instructional approach that can enhance students’ mathematical representation skills across different cognitive style profiles. The study highlights the importance of adopting meaningful learning frameworks that prioritize concept-building and student engagement, regardless of learners’ individual differences.

Abstract

Many students in Indonesia continue to experience difficulties in mathematical problem-solving due to the persistent dominance of conventional teaching approaches that limit student engagement and creativity. This study examines the effectiveness of the Search, Solve, Create, and Share (SSCS) learning model integrated with GeoEnzo in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. A quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group was employed. Seventh-grade students from SMPN Terpadu Gunung Pelindung, East Lampung, Indonesia, were selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a validated mathematical problem-solving test and analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Scheffe’s multiple comparison test to identify differences in performance among the four instructional approaches. The SSCS model integrated with GeoEnzo yielded the highest mean score (88.31), followed by the SSCS model without GeoEnzo (83.56), the conventional model with GeoEnzo (83.03), and the traditional model without technological support (77.08). ANOVA results indicated statistically significant differences (Sig. = 0.000) among the groups. The findings confirm that integrating SSCS with GeoEnzo effectively enhances students’ mathematical problem-solving skills. This research has implications for encouraging educators and curriculum developers to adopt a student-centered, technology-based learning approach to enhance higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

High-order thinking skills (HOTS) are essential abilities students must possess in the 21st Century. Understanding students' HOTS is crucial, necessitating measures to gauge the extent of their HOTS. This research aims to determine the feasibility and validity of a science assessment instrument based on integrated research results and Quranic verses. The researchers employed the R&D method with the ADDIE design. The validation was carried out by three material experts and three language experts. The assessment instrument was reliable and valid, had good discriminative power, and had a proportional difficulty level. It can be concluded that the assessment instrument is suitable for measuring students' higher-order thinking skills. This research provides a pioneering approach by integrating Al-Qur'an verses into the science assessment model, highlighting the intersection of religious texts and scientific methodologies. Additionally, the developed instrument measures higher-order thinking skills and offers educators a culturally relevant tool in predominantly Muslim educational settings, potentially enhancing students' engagement and comprehension. This integrative approach offers a fresh perspective on educational assessment tools, urging educators and curriculum developers to view religious texts as valuable resources in shaping contemporary educational paradigms

Abstract

Abstract

This article describes the exploration results of the verses of the Qur'an, which contain the concept of monotheism with a numerical value of one. This research started from learning number recognition in class, which still seemed monotonous. Furthermore, the limitations of teaching materials make integrating mathematics learning with Islamic science more difficult. Numbers have an important role in various aspects of life. Al-Qur'an, the main subject taught in Islamic schools, can be used as initial knowledge to support learning mathematics. Therefore, introducing numbers to students must be integrated with Islamic science, especially monotheism in learning at school, to lead students to successful learning and a change in religious awareness. The data collection techniques used are documents such as interpretations of the Qur'an, the Qur'an and their translations, articles, journals, books, or other literature related to mathematics and the Qur'an. The information in this study was derived from search and collection results obtained through the Ministry of Religion's Qur'an application, the Indonesian Qur'an application, and other data in the form of documents. Then, the data analysis technique used to get the numerical value of one in the Qur'an is the Miles & Huberman analysis method combined with Rodriguez modeling and "fadic" system calculations. Based on a combination of analytical theory, 16 verses of the Qur'an contain the concept of monotheism with a numerical value of one from comprehensive exploration, which is 135 verses.

Abstract

Disaster-prone regions require an education system that equips students with both scientific understanding and disaster preparedness. However, integration of disaster mitigation content into subject-specific learning, particularly physics, remains limited. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of physics teaching materials integrated with disaster mitigation education to enhance students’ disaster literacy skills. A mixed-method approach with an exploratory sequential design was employed. The development process followed the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate) to systematically design and implement teaching materials. The study was conducted in two high schools in South Lampung Regency, Lampung, Indonesia involving four classes (two experimental and two control groups) with a total of 128 students, consisting of 63 students in the experimental groups and 65 in the control groups. The T-test results show that the use of disaster mitigation-based teaching materials had a statistically significant effect on students' disaster literacy abilities, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05).  Furthermore, the results of the effect size analysis (Cohen’s d = 0.62 and 0.66) fall within the moderate category, confirming that this intervention had a significant impact on enhancing students’ disaster literacy skills related to disaster mitigation. The implementation of this teaching material not only enhances students’ understanding of physics concepts but also increases their awareness and preparedness for disasters, particularly around disaster literacy, making it a strategic innovation in disaster education. This research contributes significantly to the development of disaster education curricula in Indonesia, particularly within the context of physics education.
