Abstract

Academic procrastination hampers students’ achievement. Thus, the current research identified and analyzed the relationship between resilience and academic procrastination with self-compassion as the mediator by involving Junior High School students (SMP Negeri) throughout Tolitoli City as many as 326 people chosen using cluster random sampling. Their data were collected using the scales of resilience, academic procrastination, and self-compassion. Findings showed a direct negative relationship between resilience and academic procrastination, self-compassion had a positive relationship with resilience, and academic procrastination negatively related to self-compassion. Further, based on the mediation analysis the researchers found no direct relationship between resilience and academic procrastination through self-compassion. These imply that reducing academic procrastination is important to imptove self-compassion and resilience.

Abstract

Psychological well-being affects one’s feeling and behavior. Thus, this study attempted to examine the effectiveness of group counseling with reframing technique to improve the psychological well-being of the grade eight students of SMP Almunawir Batang. It used reframing intervention for six sessions and a pretest-posttest design which was analyzed using Wilcoxon test. Of initially 135 students, eight containing four male students and four female students were chosen to be the subjects of this study. Findings showed that the group counseling with reframing technique is effective to promote psychological well-being. Consequently, reframing technique can be said effective to improve this variable, and counselors are suggested to apply this treatment to improve students’ psychological well-being.

Abstract

High School students often experience high academic stress, even they are expected to achieve high academic achievement. In this case optimism holds an important role because students who have high optimism are believed to manage academic stress. Due to this background, the present study attempted to analyze the effectiveness of solution-focused brief group counseling to increase the optimism of Public Senior High School or SMA Negeri 5 Semarang students. It used pretest-posttest control group design and Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) scale to collect the data which later were analyzed using mixed ANOVA. Findings indicated that the solution-focused brief counseling has been effective to increase the optimism of students with academic stress. Thus, counselors are required to master this type of counseling to foster students’ optimism and reduce academic stress.

Abstract

Social and family attention influences children development, including vulnerable children. The vulnerable children who lack of those attention will experience difficulties in adapting to environment, such as having low self-esteem, being ostracized, and being vulnerable to violate existing norms. Regarding the previous explanation, this study strived for examining the effectiveness of a group counseling service with solution focused brief therapy to reduce vulnerable children social anxiety. It used an experimental method with one group pretest-posttest design by involving 7 vulnerable children in SOS Children’s Village Semarang as the subjects. Findings indicated that the group counseling with solution focused brief therapy has been effective to reduce the social anxiety of the vulnerable children. Further, this treatment can be an alternative method for counselors or caregivers to reduce the vulnerable children social anxiety.

Abstract

Academic procrastination is an act of delaying the completion of academic tasks that lead to the decline in academic achievement. This study strived for analyzing the effects of self-regulated learning and peer conformity on academic procrastination. It used a correlational design and involved 72 students in grade eight at SMP Negeri 20 Semarang in the academic year of 2022/2023 as the sample. In analyzing the data, multiple linear regression test was used. Findings showed that self-regulated learning negatively correlated with academic procrastination, while peer conformity positively correlated with students’ academic procrastination. Thus, self-regulated learning and peer conformity need to become concern to give interventions for academic procrastination.

Abstract

Low body image is potential to cause students have low self-esteem and poor learning concentration. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of reality group counseling with a classroom meeting and metaphor techniques to improve the self-esteem of students with low body image in Senior High School or SMA grade. During the investigation, the classroom meeting and metaphor techniques were given for four sessions in a framework of a pretest and posttest method analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. In addition, the subjects were the 8 students at SMAN 1 Maospati sampled from 320 total students. Findings showed that the group counseling with a classroom meeting technique was able to improve the self-esteem of the students with low body image. Abstract

Academic hardiness as an ability to gain good achievement in learning, have commitment, and control over what they obtain is truly needed by students to face academic challenges. This study strived for examining the effectiveness of group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach to improve the academic hardiness of Senior High School (SMA) students. It used a motivational technique treatment for five sessions and analyzed students’ pretest and posttest data using a Wilcoxon test. In terms of subject, this study invited eight students of SMAN 9 Semarang, consisting of four males and four females sampled from 290 students. Findings revealed that this technique was effective to improve the academic hardiness of SMA students. Thus, counselors are recommended to implement the group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach to improve the academic hardiness of SMA students.

Abstract

Academic resilience is an individual’s ability to continue his life after experiencing learning difficulties. This study attempted to prove The effects of self-efficacy and academic engagement on academic resilience. It used a correlational design and involved 280 university students who were writing final projects. Findings revealed that both self-efficacy and academic engagement affected the students’ academic resilience improvement. Thus, self-efficacy and academic engagement are urged to be enhanced to support the development of students’ academic resilience.

Abstract

Researches on career aspirations are often done to university and school students in which they have sufficient career information, but those are rarely done to inland tribe adolescents. Therefore, this research was focused on investigating the underlying career aspirations of the Akit tribe adolescents. It used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. For the data, this research involved 13 informants with inclusion criteria. Their data were collected using interviews, observation, and documentation. The collected data were validated using source and method triangulations. Following the triangulation, the analysis was carried out using a Miles and Huberman model which comes up with four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. Findings have proved that the fundamental assumptions of career aspirations by the sukit adolescents were finding a stable and secured job, becoming an expert at a particular field, and getting better education. It shows that the sukit adolescents have career aspirations, so there is a need for providing information to help them achieve the desired career.

Abstract

Foreign language anxiety is considered as one of disrupting factor for students to perform well in English class. This study attempted to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy group counseling to reduce foreign language classroom anxiety through self-efficacy in students at PPMI Assalam Sukoharjo. There were 14 students divided into two groups of experimental group and control group with equal amount randomly. The students experimental group got 6 times treatment of mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy. In collecting their data, a questionnaire with a likert scale was used. Following the data collection, repeated measures ANOVA test and mediation analysis were carried out. Findings revealed that based on an interactional analysis, there found greater reduction of foreign language classroom anxiety in the experimental group (F(3,11) = 10.789, with sig (p) = 0.007 < 0, 05. This can also be seen in the results of the second hypothesis testing indicated by the calculated F value for the experimental group, namely 11.061 with sig (p) 0.007 <0.05. In other words, the mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy group counseling has proved effective in reducing foreign language classroom anxiety through self-efficacy in grade IX students at MTs PPMI Assalaam Sukoharjo. Hasil penelitian menegaskan analisis interaksi yang menjadi dasar dalam pembuktian hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat penurunan foreign language classroom anxiety yang terjadi pada kelompok eksperimen yang lebih besar daripada kelompok kontrol (F(3,11) = 10,789, dengan sig (p) = 0,007 < 0,05. Hal ini juga terlihat pada hasil pengujian hipotesis kedua yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai F hitung untuk kelompok perlakuan sebesar 11,061 dengan sig (p) 0,007 < 0,05. Dengan kata lain, konseling kelompok mindfulness based cognitive behavior therapy terbukti efektif untuk mereduksi foreign language classroom anxiety melalui self-efficacy pada siswa kelas IX MTs PPMI Assalaam Sukoharjo.
