Abstract

Arabic language learning at lower secondary school level often faces various challenges, such as low student motivation and a lack of engaging and innovative teaching materials. Although a number of studies have examined the use of visual media in language learning, few have systematically developed illustrated comic books specifically for Arabic language learning at Islamic lower secondary schools within the context of local Indonesian culture this gap forms the basis of this research. This study aims to develop illustrated comic-based Arabic language learning materials for Year 8 students at Al-Ulum Terpadu Islamic Junior High School in Medan using the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were collected through observation, interviews, validation questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The results of the subject matter expert validation showed a feasibility percentage of 87.5%, whilst the media expert validation yielded 85.0%; both fell within the ‘highly feasible’ category. The pilot test with students yielded an average positive response score of 88.3%, with a learning gain (N-Gain) of 0.62, which falls within the moderate-to-high category. Unlike Arabic language learning materials, which are generally text-based, the illustrated comic media developed in this study integrates contextual visual narratives with vocabulary and dialogue content in a cohesive manner, thereby making a tangible contribution to the innovation of Arabic language learning materials in Islamic secondary schools.

Abstract

Despite the growing scholarly interest in the Love-Based Curriculum (LBC), empirical research examining its implementation in Arabic language instruction remains limited. Most existing studies have discussed LBC from conceptual and general educational perspectives, leaving its practical application in language learning contexts underexplored. This study investigates the management of Arabic language learning through the LBC approach at State Islamic Senior High School, a state Islamic senior high school in Riau Province, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving two Arabic language teachers and two Grade XI students selected purposively. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that the LBC approach fosters harmonious, humanistic, and dialogic teacher–student relationships; promotes positive character traits such as discipline, responsibility, empathy, and religiosity; and facilitates the internalization of spiritual, social, and moral values through Qur’anic integration, religious routines, and humanistic classroom practices. The study further demonstrates that character development occurs through supportive emotional relationships and meaningful value-based learning experiences. This research contributes to the field of Arabic language education by providing empirical evidence that the Love-Based Curriculum can serve as an effective instructional management framework that integrates linguistic learning, character formation, and spiritual development within an Islamic secondary school context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of management principles in improving the effectiveness of Arabic language learning programs in Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Pekanbaru City, Indonesia, with a focus on the principles of reciprocity and centralization. Previous studies have rarely integrated reward systems and centralized curriculum policies in Arabic language learning management. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving two Arabic language teachers and one madrasah principal from MTs Masmur and MTs Al-Fajar. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings show that the application of management principles planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation contributes to improving learning effectiveness. The principle of reciprocity enhances teacher motivation through financial and non-financial rewards, which encourage more innovative teaching practices. Meanwhile, the principle of centralization helps maintain curriculum consistency but may limit teachers' flexibility in adapting learning to students’ needs. The hybrid management model, defined as the integration of centralized curriculum standards with limited teacher autonomy in instructional practices, has proven to support adaptive and effective Arabic language learning. This study emphasizes the importance of balancing reward systems and centralized policies to improve teacher performance and the effectiveness of Arabic language learning in the madrasah environment.

Abstract

Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding schools plays a strategic role in supporting the understanding of Islamic sources and the development of students' academic and communicative competencies. One of the determining factors for the success of this learning is the effectiveness of learning programme management integrated with the application of bi'ah 'arabiyah. This study aims to analyse the patterns of Arabic language learning programme management based on bi'ah 'arabiyah and its contribution to the effectiveness of learning at the Abu Darda Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru and Darul Hadis Al-Watsar. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants included the boarding school leaders, the head of the language department (qism al-lughah), and Arabic teachers selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that the Arabic language learning programme management pattern was implemented systematically through four management functions, namely planning, organising, implementing, and supervising. The application of bi'ah 'arabiyah has been proven to contribute positively to improving the language skills of students, although there are still obstacles such as limited vocabulary and psychological factors of beginner students. Overall, this study concludes that planned and sustainable management of Arabic language learning programmes based on bi'ah 'arabiyah can improve the effectiveness of Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation, perceived impact, and challenges of the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) cooperative learning method in Arabic speaking learning among eighth-grade students at Integrated Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru. This study employs a qualitative approach using field research. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the Arabic language teacher, the school principal, and eighth-grade students at Integrated Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru. The results indicate that the implementation of the NHT cooperative learning method effectively enhances students’ engagement, confidence, and self-assurance in speaking Arabic. Students became more active in discussions, more prepared to provide answers, and more confident in expressing their opinions due to individual responsibilities within the group. Additionally, the learning environment became more interactive, communicative, and student-centered. The NHT method also helped students enrich their vocabulary, improve sentence structure, and practice speaking fluency through group collaboration. However, this study also identified several challenges, such as limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and anxiety among some students when speaking. Therefore, teacher guidance, continuous practice, and vocabulary reinforcement are necessary to optimize learning outcomes. Thus, the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) cooperative learning method is effective as an alternative learning strategy to improve students’ Arabic speaking skills.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: first, to identify phonetic difficulties in pronouncing hijaiyah letters and the factors influencing them among students of MTs Ma’had Salafiyah Chasanul Hidayah Tanjung Medan, Rokan Hulu. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and pronunciation tests to analyze students’ ability to articulate hijaiyah letters accurately. Then, the data were analyzed descriptively through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification of interview and observation results. The findings indicate that, first, phonetic difficulties lie in the inability to distinguish similar sounds, challenges in pronouncing pharyngeal (halqiyah) letters, and differences in students’ abilities. Second, the influencing factors include weak phonological awareness, mother-tongue interference, educational background, and psychological and physiological factors. Therefore, improving pronunciation skills cannot rely solely on practice but requires a comprehensive and integrative instructional approach. This study recommends developing technology-based, integrative phonetic teaching methods, enhancing teacher training, and conducting further research to examine the effectiveness of multimodal strategies for sustainably and contextually improving students’ pronunciation accuracy.  Keyword: Arabic Pronunciation, Phonetic Difficulties, Phonological Awareness

Abstract

This research is motivated by several issues related to radicalism and religious violence still prevalent in Indonesia's public and private universities. The survey results by the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) of Indonesia reported that as many as 39% of students in 15 provinces in Indonesia are indicated of being attracted to radical ideologies and fundamentalist movements. This research aims to describe the pattern of transformational leadership in strengthening religious moderation among students of Private Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIS) in the Riau Province to provide an ideal and humanistic alternative model for the development of religious moderation. This research employs field research methodology, utilizing data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation to address the research question, "How does transformational leadership contribute to strengthening religious moderation among PTKIS students in Riau?" Based on the research findings, the pattern of transformational leadership applied by the four leaders of PTKIS in Riau positively impacts religious moderation among their respective campus students by carrying out 5 strategic steps included in the discussion.

Abstract

Studies on human resource management (HRM) in education have widely examined teacher recruitment, selection, and placement in formal school settings, yet limited attention has been given to how these processes operate in pesantren-based Islamic boarding schools, where religious values, kinship networks, and professional qualifications intersect. This study aims to analyze the recruitment, selection, and placement system of Arabic language teachers in a pesantren-based Madrasah Aliyah and to explain how HRM practices are adapted to the institutional culture of pesantren. Employing a descriptive qualitative case-study approach, data were collected through observation and semi-structured interviews with a purposively selected Arabic language teacher directly involved in the recruitment process. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, including coding, categorization, and thematic interpretation. The findings reveal that recruitment combines internal alumni networks and external candidates through flexible, trust-based mechanisms rather than formal committees. Selection emphasizes administrative screening, interviews, microteaching, Arabic proficiency, and, most importantly, personal character alongside academic competence. Teacher placement is determined according to institutional needs, teaching workload, and staff capacity. The study contributes by proposing a contextual HRM model that integrates strategic human resource management principles with pesantren cultural values, demonstrating how character-based recruitment and alumni trust networks can strengthen teacher management while extending HRM theory within Islamic educational institutions

Abstract

Background. This research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of Arabic language learning program management at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fadhilah Pekanbaru. Focusing on the aspects of planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring, the research aims to improve the quality of Arabic language learning and ensure conformity with the vision and mission of the madrasah. Purpose. The study aims to evaluate and improve the management of Arabic language learning program at Madrasa Tsanawiyah Fadhilah Pekanbaru. The focus is on optimizing the planning, organization, implementation, and supervision of the program to achieve effectiveness and efficiency in achieving the vision and mission of Arabic language education in the madrasah.. Method. This descriptive qualitative research aims to find out the management of the Arabic language program at MTs Fadhilah Pekanbaru. Data collection uses interviews with the principal, observation, and documentation about the management of Arabic language programs at madrasah tsanawiyah  Fadhilah Pekanbaru. Results. Madrasah Tsanawiyah  Fadhilah uses the functions of program management studies in implementing the Arabic language learning program for all students so that this program runs effectively and efficiently, namely: 1) Planning the Arabic language learning program in preschool children through the needs identification stage. 2) Organizing in this school is the coach as the head of the foundation who holds the highest power. 3) The implementation of the Arabic language learning program in preschool children is by preparing teachers, making learning process plans (RPP). Conclusion. The success of the Arabic language learning program at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fadhilah Pekanbaru hinges on effective management functions. Consistency with the foundation's vision and mission is maintained through thorough planning, well-organized implementation, and direct supervision, highlighting the critical role of management in program success.
