Abstract

This study analyzes the management patterns of Arabic language learning programs in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Padangsidimpuan City through three approaches: classical, four language skills, and grammar-based (qawā‘id). The study employed a qualitative field approach using interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings show that the yellow book-based pattern defined as learning that relies on classical Islamic texts (kutub al-turāth) is the most dominant and systematically implemented, supported by structured book selection, bandongansorogan methods, and teacher guidance in text comprehension and i‘rāb analysis. The four-skills approach is applied gradually from receptive to productive skills, but its effectiveness is constrained by the lack of a supportive Arabic language environment (bi’ah lughawiyyah) and limited learning resources. The qawā‘id based pattern remains a foundational approach for understanding texts but is still largely deductive and weakly integrated with modern instructional media. Overall, these patterns complement each other, yet their implementation is hindered by limited facilities, varied student abilities, and weak program integration. This study underscores the need to improve teacher competence, learning facilities, language environments, and curriculum integration to enhance students’ communicative skills and mastery of classical texts.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Student-Centered Learning (SCL) in Arabic language learning by analyzing its forms, effectiveness, and implementation challenges. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on PRISMA guidelines, articles were retrieved from Google Scholar using the keywords “Student-Centered Learning” AND “Arabic Learning” for the period 2015–2025. From 1,470 identified studies, 16 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed through thematic synthesis focusing on SCL models, learning outcomes, and implementation factors. The findings reveal that Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), and collaborative blended learning are the most frequently applied SCL models and are effective in improving students’ productive skills, motivation, confidence, and engagement. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including limited teacher competence, a lack of authentic learning resources, insufficient institutional support, and infrastructural constraints. This study is among the first SLRs to specifically examine SCL implementation in Arabic language learning within the Indonesian context. The findings provide practical insights for teachers, curriculum designers, and policymakers to strengthen the design and implementation of SCL-oriented Arabic language instruction.

Abstract

This study analyzes the management of an Arabic language learning program based on the Madrasah Self-Evaluation (Evaluasi Diri Madrasah/EDM) framework in improving learning quality at MAN 1 Mandailing Natal. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews with eight key informants (the head of the madrasah, vice principal for curriculum, Arabic language teachers, and students), and analysis of EDM reports and instructional documents. Data validity was ensured through triangulation techniques. The findings demonstrate that instructional management was implemented through four POAC stages: planning based on EDM data, organizing through a clear division of institutional responsibilities, implementation combining communicative and digital instructional methods, and supervision via academic observation and reflective evaluation. Critically, EDM integration functioned as a sustainable internal quality assurance mechanism, enabling evidence-based decision-making for teacher competency development and instructional improvement. This study concludes that the systematic integration of POAC-based learning management and Madrasah Self-Evaluation significantly enhances Arabic language learning quality and provides a replicable model for continuous educational improvement in madrasah contexts.
