Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major public health concern in tropical regions such as Indonesia, where environmental and behavioural factors play crucial roles in its transmission. This study aimed to analyse the factors associated with the incidence of DHF in the working area of the Belawan II Community Health Centre in Medan. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. A sample of 110 housewives was selected via purposive sampling from a population of 150 housewives in the area. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation, then analysed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-Square test), and multivariate (logistic regression) methods. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between DHF incidence and the following factors: education level (p=0.001), housewives' knowledge (p=0.000), 3M Plus behaviour (p=0.000), health promotion services (p=0.000), and the presence of mosquito larvae (p=0.000). In contrast, variables for age (p=0.161) and occupation (p=0.898) showed no significant association. Multivariate analysis identified health promotion services as the dominant factor associated with DHF incidence (OR=0.029; 95% CI=0.010-0.084; p=0.000), with housewives' knowledge serving as a supporting factor. In conclusion, DHF prevention efforts in the Belawan II area should prioritise enhancing the quality and coverage of effective health promotion services, complemented by improving household-level knowledge and preventive practices, alongside sustainable control of mosquito breeding sites.

Abstract

The flood disaster that struck the Tanjung Pura area of Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, had a significant impact on the social, economic, health, and psychological well-being of the community. Limited access to basic necessities, decreased nutritional quality, and the emergence of psychological trauma, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women, are key issues requiring rapid and integrated response. This community service activity aims to provide a disaster response through a Three-Pillar Action approach: Rapid Logistics, Appropriate Nutrition, and Trauma Services. The implementation method was participatory, encompassing preparation and coordination with local partners, core activities such as the distribution of logistical assistance and nutritious food, and trauma healing services. The program concluded with monitoring and evaluation. The aid distributed included basic food packages, hygiene kits, clothing, and psychosocial support for the affected community. Results from the activity indicate that this program was able to meet the community's basic needs quickly and effectively, improve nutritional intake, especially for vulnerable groups, and help reduce stress and trauma caused by the disaster. Thus, the Three Pillars Action approach has proven effective as a holistic and sustainable disaster response model in supporting the physical and psychological recovery of affected communities. Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study examined the associations between objectively measured daily physical activity (PA) and motor skill competence (MSC) among Indonesian preschool children, addressing the critical gap in understanding early childhood movement behaviors in Southeast Asian contexts. Materials and methods: Eighty-three preschool children (40 boys, 43 girls; mean age 5.2 ± 0.7 years) from TKQ Baiturrahman Medan, Indonesia, participated in this cross-sectional study. Daily PA was measured using ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers worn for seven consecutive days. MSC was assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3), evaluating locomotor and ball skills. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression analyses examined associations between PA variables and MSC scores, controlling for age and gender. Results: Children accumulated 58.4 ± 18.2 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) daily and 8,847 ± 2,156 steps/day. Mean total MSC standard score was 92.3 ± 14.6 (locomotor: 9.2 ± 2.8; ball skills: 8.9 ± 3.1). Significant positive correlations emerged between daily MVPA and total MSC (r = 0.41, p < 0.001), locomotor skills (r = 0.38, p < 0.001), and ball skills (r = 0.36, p = 0.001). Step count correlated moderately with MSC (r = 0.34, p = 0.002). Multiple regression revealed that MVPA significantly predicted MSC (β = 0.39, p < 0.001), explaining 23% of variance after controlling for covariates. Children in the highest MVPA tertile demonstrated significantly higher MSC scores than those in the lowest tertile (98.7 ± 12.4 vs. 84.6 ± 14.2, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Daily PA, particularly MVPA, demonstrates significant positive associations with motor skill competence in preschool children. These findings underscore the importance of promoting adequate PA opportunities in early childhood education settings to support fundamental motor development. Early childhood educators and policymakers should prioritize structured and unstructured PA experiences to facilitate optimal motor competence development during this critical developmental period.

Abstract

Stunting is one of Indonesia's most prevalent nutritional problems, with a prevalence rate of 24.4%. In Samosir Regency, the prevalence of stunting remains relatively high at 28.4%. Community health centers are crucial in the community's efforts to accelerate stunting reduction. This study aimed to explore the barriers a community health center faces in implementing the stunting reduction acceleration program. Method: Using a qualitative case study design, the study was conducted at Buhit community health center in Samosir Regency from August to December 2022. The key informants for this study included the community health center leader, head of administration, nutritionist, and midwife. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and document review. The results identified several barriers to the implementation of the Accelerated Stunting Reduction Programme. These barriers encompassed limited staff resources and concurrent positions, the availability and suitability of anthropometric tools, a lack of coordination in planning activities between management and program officers, families' fear of the negative stigma associated with stunting, and low levels of community participation. Farmers who do not comply with safe behavior will have a higher health risk because of the toxicity of pesticides that can be directly inhaled and enter through the pores of the farmers' skin

Abstract

The palm oil industry in Indonesia operates under high occupational risk conditions, making occupational safety and health (OSH) a critical factor for ensuring both sustainability and productivity. This study aimed to identify factors significantly associated with workplace accidents among palm oil processing workers at PTPN IV Gunung Bayu, Simalungun. A descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, involving all 75 employees. Data were collected using questionnaires that assessed occupational accidents along with 6 independent variables: physical work environment, social work environment, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), machinery safety, work behavior, and participation in OSH training. These data were complemented by company accident reports from 2021 to 2024. Although workers reported generally positive perceptions of safety factors, 66.7% had experienced workplace accidents. Statistical analyses revealed significant associations between accidents and the physical work environment, PPE use, machinery safety, work behavior, and OSH training. Multivariate analysis identified the lack of OSH training as the most influential factor, increasing the risk of accidents by 5.1 times. These findings suggest that OSH training, specifically focusing on hazard awareness and safe work practices, is crucial for reducing workplace accidents. Key implementation challenges include engaging a diverse and experienced workforce. The study concludes that structured and periodic OSH training is vital for fostering a proactive safety culture and improving operational efficiency in the palm oil industry.
