The purpose of the study was to determine how to improve the quality of learning outcomes of students' speaking skills in front of the class (telling fantasy text) of VII grade students of SMP N 5 Muaro Jambi Regency by applying the numbered head learning model. This research is a mixed methods classroom action research (PTK). The PTK was carried out in three cycles. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. Quantitative data were analyzed by calculating students' achievement scores in the presentation and retelling tests. Qualitative data was used to analyze the process of action, the results of improving the quality of speaking, which was awakened before and after the implementation of the action. The results showed that (1) before the implementation of the action, the students' class average score was 50 in the predicate of less (K), in cycle one there was an increase in the class average score of 55 with the predicate of sufficient (C), in cycle two the value of students' speaking skills was still in the predicate of sufficient (C) but there was an increase from the average of 55 to 67.5. In cycle three, there was a significant increase, namely the student's acquisition value of 72 with a good predicate (B). Factors that influence the improvement of student speaking are frequent practice, motivation given to students and the cultivation of self-confidence in students as well as the application of the numbered head learning model. It can be concluded that the numbered head learning model can improve students' speaking skills such as the occurrence of overall student activeness during the learning process and the increase in student grades after training.
