Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the use of sexism in French language, which occurs frequently since the French Revolution in 1789. This sexism is historically and politically constructed by the society and espoused by different social actors, such as philosophers, politicians, religious leaders and others. The various forms of this sexism range from the level of syntax to semantics and place women in different categories. The overall analysis reveals that the women’s representations are underestimated, stigmatized and considered inferior vis à vis men’s representations.
KEKUASAAN DI ATAS PENTAS : LA TRAGÉDIE « PHÈDRE» DALAM PERSPEKTIF FEMINISME POSTSTRUKTURALIS Wening Udasmoro

Abstract

This article attempts to analyse one of Jean Racine’s famous works entitled Phèdre using the feminist post-structuralist approach, which differs from earlier analysis of his dramas by others. As a classical work, Phèdre has frequently been analysed by many scholars using the structuralist approach, thus specifically concentrating on binary opposition synthesis. As a result, the dichotomous understanding of Phèdre has been produced, and in many instances shows the stereotypical effect of women in many aspects of their lives. In this analysis of Phèdre, the feminist post structuralist approach deconstructs that understanding and revealed that power relation is one of the important perspectives that can be used in illuminating meaning within the text.

Abstract

The inclusion of French loanwords in the Indonesian language cannot be separated from the fact that there have been contacts between the two languages. In the process the French words underwent interference due to the different systems between the Indonesian Language and French, such as phonetic and ortographic system, in addition to the different structure of word formation of both languages. This phenomenon is closely linked to the status of French loanwords in the Indonesian language, whether they are interference or already integrated with the Indonesian language. In light of this, this study aims to examine whether French loanwords in the Indonesian Language are in the state of interference or already have integration status. This Study shows that the majority of French loanwords in Indonesian are still in the forms of interference. This is because these loanwords are still in their original forms – French words. Other French loanwords are already integrated with the Indonesian language, especially those having undergone consistent adjustments through their spoken and written use.

Abstract

One of the peculiarities of New Caledonian is its French nuance, especially on the many French lexicons that either have integrated in the Javanese variant or are only borrowed. This study tries to answer the questions of what underlies the use of the French lexicons and how these lexicons integrated in New Caledonian Javanese. The data for this study were obtained through speech recordings as well as live interviews with a number of representative informants in New Caledonia. The data were collected through a qualitative manner in February 2013. Theories on language contacts, in particular with regards to loanwords, were implemented to analyze the data. The findings of this study indicate that the use of the French lexicons are caused by, firstly, the nonexistence of their equivalents in the recipient language (Javanese), secondly, Javanese speakers’ motivation to distinguish themselves from other speakers, and the tendency of the Javanese to find the practical and easier way in dealing with the French lexicons.

Abstract

In literature, questions of the self and the other are frequently presented. The identity politics that gained prominence after the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001 has occupied considerable space in this debate throughout the globe, including in France. One example of a novel dealing with the self and other is Michel Houellebecq’s Soumission (2015). This article attempts to explore the processes of selfing and othering in this work. The politics of identity that seems to present Muslims and Islam as the other and French as the self is also extended to other identities and aspects involved in the novel. This article attempts to show, first, how the French author Houellebecq positions the self and other in Soumission; second, the type of self and other the novel focuses on; and third, how its selfing and othering processes reveal the gender hierarchy and social categorization of French society. It finds that the novel presents a hierarchy in its narrative through which characters are positioned based on their gender and sexual orientation, as well as their age and ethnic heritage.

Abstract

This article explores the transformation of the matrilineal system within Minangkabau children’s carito. In general, children’s carito are considered bedtime stories that convey positive values; as such, research into them has focused on values. Children’s carito have been collected through interviews with storytellers who retain the carito within their memories. The memories of these storytellers have changed together with changes in the storytellers themselves and in their environments. To explore the changes in the matrilineal system within the carito, one story has been analyzed over three generations (from grandparents, parents, to children). Changes in the matrilineal system are evidenced through the carito characters’ emergence and disappearance, their actions, and their interactions with their mothers, who—as in the matrilineal system—are central within the carito. Changes, differences, and behaviors within the carito indicate the dynamic transformation of communal families to conjugal families and ultimately nuclear families.

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the ideological struggles reflected in the identity construction of French-language users in Indonesia. Using a critical sociolinguistic approach, it examines how Indonesians users, with their ideologies, adapt or adopt the French language and culture, as well as the different patterns and models they use to do so. The informants of this research consist of 9 students in deep interviews, 60 students in class observation, and 15 lecturers at 12 Indonesian universities who have taught the French language and culture for at least two years. Data from the interviews is compared to French instruction books and media discourses using intertextuality and interdiscursivity analysis. This research identifies three models used by French users in Indonesia: to adopt French language and culture, to adapt it, or to abstain from the reproduction of both. Users of the first model completely adopt all aspects of French culture, including in their consumption and style. Meanwhile, users of the second model tend to select and accept only those aspects considered positive within their own value system. Those using the final model tend to ignore many aspects of French culture and language.
