Abstract

Hydrogen is a flexible energy carrier with the potential to replace fossil fuels as a clean and renewable energy source. However, efficient storage systems under ambient conditions are essential for practical applications. This study investigates magnesium–nickel-based metal hydrides for hydrogen storage, enhanced with 20% graphite or additional nickel. The synthesized samples—MgNi2, MgNi2 + graphite 20%, Mg2Ni + graphite 20%, and Mg2Ni + Ni 1:1—were characterized using XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, and hydrogen temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). Crystallite sizes were found to be 132.125, 137.125, 77.168, and 92.335 nm, respectively. BET analysis revealed surface areas of 2.144, 1.664, 7.113, and 2.308 m2/g, corresponding pore volumes of 0.0038, 0.0031, 0.0137, and 0.0100 cm3/g. TPD results showed that Mg2Ni + graphite 20% had the fastest desorption rate (46 min), consistent with its highest surface area and pore volume. This sample also achieved the highest hydrogen adsorption capacity at 0.0615 mmol/g. These findings demonstrate that Mg-Ni hydrides, especially those modified with graphite, offer promising performance for hydrogen storage applications, particularly in systems requiring rapid desorption and efficient kinetics, such as fuel-cell electric vehicles. The results highlight the potential of tailored Mg-Ni composites for advanced hydrogen storage solutions.

Abstract

Background: Cement industry workers are exposed to significant oral health risks due to hazardous conditions, but the role of social determinants in this context is not well understood. Purpose: This study investigates the association between social determinants and oral health among factory and office workers in the cement industry. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at PT. Semen Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. A stratified random sample of 83 workers was selected. Social determinants were assessed using World Health Organization (WHO) 2013 and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) questionnaires, while oral health was evaluated using decayed, missing, and filled teeth index (DMF-T), community periodontal index (CPI), and inspection. Ten calibrated dentists conducted dental examinations. Multiple linear regression was used for data analysis. Results: Factory workers exhibited higher rates of dental caries (95.83%), periodontal disease (87.50%), abrasion (91.67%), and attrition (87.50%), compared to office workers. Social determinants significantly associated with dental caries in factory workers included age, sugar intake, tooth-brushing frequency, and last dental check-up (r2 = 0.573), while only sugar intake was associated with caries in office workers (r2 = 0.290). For periodontal disease determinants associated with age, psychosocial factors, and smoking (r2 = 0.558) were significant in factory workers, whereas, in office workers, age, sugar intake, tooth-brushing frequency, last dental check-up, and smoking were significantly associated (r2 = 0.870). Age was the only significant determinant of abrasion and attrition in both groups. Conclusion: Social determinants influence oral health among cement industry workers, especially factory workers, due to physiological and psychological changes caused by working conditions. However, office workers also face oral health challenges due to poor oral health behaviors.

Abstract

Electric vehicles are a key alternative to fossil fuel-based transportation but face challenges in safety and driving range. Blade battery technology, with its long and flat shape, offers improved heat distribution and safety. This study focuses on the thermal performance of a blade-shaped Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery enhanced with manganese (LMFP), using a water-based cooling system to ensure temperature stability during operation. Effective thermal management, including the use of cooling systems, is crucial for maintaining battery performance and reliability. This study modeled a blade-shaped battery with a water-cooling system using ANSYS Fluent. The process involves designing 3D geometry and meshing to simulate thermal behavior accurately. The simulation was conducted under varying operating conditions by applying different inlet temperatures for the cooling system (14.85°C, 26.85°C, and 34.85°C ) combined with different discharge rates (0.5C, 1C, 2C, and 5C). These parameter variations were designed to evaluate the thermal response of the battery under realistic and dynamic working environments. The results indicate that the cooling system can maintain the battery temperature within the optimal thermal range, with the maximum temperature remaining below 35°C across all tested conditions. Higher C-rates resulted in increased internal heat generation, leading to higher cell temperatures. This study contributes to the development of thermally stable, higher-energy-density batteries, offering practical insights for designing safer and more efficient battery packs in electric vehicles.
