Abstract

Designing a language lesson is a challenging task for teachers. In order to have a good language lesson, teachers cannot just rely on the textbook. They need at least to develop the lesson from the textbook or even to design their own lesson. Teachers also need to consider how they are going to apply the lesson planned in the classroom. Another consideration would be to integrate the specific language skill and/or element with the other skills. This is essential in order to achieve the utmost results of teaching and learning. This paper discusses a language lesson in the area of grammar - Used To  - designed by the author. The lesson is not only intended to expose learners with the structure and rules of grammar, but also allow learners to practice the grammar in use. Hence, the developed grammar lesson aimed to improve the communicative competence of the learners. Considering the wide aspect of teaching analysis, the present article focuses on the application of the lessons in the classroom, the aspects of language skills covered, as well as the linguistic foundation for the exercises. It is hoped that this article can provide insights to language educators in developing grammar lessons that cater to the considerations of pedagogical and linguistic perspectives.

Abstract

UIN Jakarta, with its distinct characteristics, focuses on integrating Islamic and general education as a unity. This research focuses on the oldest faculty: The Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK, hereafter). This study aims to a) explore the concept of integration of Islamic and general education at FITK, and b) find out the extent to which lecturers at FITK understand the concept of integration. The approach used in this research was phenomenology. It employed the qualitative method to describe the concept of integration of Islamic and general education and reveal the extent of lecturers' understanding of scientific integration. The results showed that at the conceptual level, the paradigm of reintegration of Islamic and general education is an integration of Islamic knowledge and values, which is two-way: from secular sciences to Islamic values and from conventional Islamic religious materials to secular sciences. The study also found that scientific integration has long been present in the FITK academic environment. However, the concept of scientific integration itself does not appear to be a uniformity which causes many different interpretations from each study program, even from lecturers in the FITK environment. In addition, the concept of scientific integration has not been fully understood by each leader in the academic community of UIN Jakarta, mainly due to the lack of socialization and no appointment for specific institutions responsible for managing this integration process.

Abstract

This article sought to explore women's language style through a regular conversation in a natural setting conducted by women speakers. Considering the potential of Podcast on Spotify as a means to gather the conversation discourse, the writers were fascinated by one of the Podcasts performed by an American journalist and activist named Noor Tagouri. She initiated and ran a program called The Process to disclose someone's struggle, unique costumes, and way of thinking behind his/her success. This Podcast was chosen in terms of personal and introspective topics developed by Tagouri and her guest, Lisa Ling, whose profession was also a journalist. Through personal and introspective ideas, the writers were able to identify women's linguistic features such as: minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, and compliments in order to build a cooperative environment. This article employed descriptive qualitative methods following the procedures proposed by Creswell   (2014): collecting the data, analyzing the data, and interpreting the data. From thirty-four minutes of conversation, the result indicated that the speakers frequently used the features of hedges (55%). Then, followed by Minimal response occurred (20%), questions (12%), compliment (8%), tag questions (5%), and commands, directives, swearing and taboos (0%). It can be concluded that the use of hedges was more widely used to maintain the flow of conversations which in line with turn-taking, courtesy, and mitigating miscommunication between speakers.

Nowadays, information can be conveyed not only through words, but also through images. An image is also a form of one-way communication because, through an image, people can convey the meaning. This study aimed to describe Anies Baswedan’s political cartoons on his first 100 days as a governor. This study employed a qualitative research approach, and the content or document analysis as the research design. The researchers collected and analyzed the data dealing with the relationship between the utterances and Anies’ cartoons on his first 100 days as Jakarta’s governor. In analyzing the data, some steps were taken: first, categorizing the sign into icon, symbol, index using a typology of signs; second, interpreting the meaning of the political cartoons; last, drawing conclusions based on the result of the analysis. The study found that the signs in those political cartoons had powerful meanings to convey the aspiration of Indonesian people freely towards Anies’ government. Also, the fact that the cartoons were in the forms of images eased the readers in understanding the meanings behind them, and the political cartoons deal with the relationship between visual and verbal signs of cartoons because it will be helpful for the researchers to know about events depicted in those cartoons. The study also offers some potential use of cartoons for language teaching, even though the challenges of employing them are evident.

The primary data were a comment section of Rich Brian's newest official song music video, while the secondary source was from available works of literature and urban dictionary. Therefore, to collect the data, this study did the documentation from the D.O.A. official music video from one-month duration comments. As the data obtained, there were 49 slang words found. Then, they were analyzed through Yule (2010)’s theory as the basis of word formation process standard, while Zhou & Fan (2013)’s theory was used as the basis of word formation function standard. Data analysis is divided into several steps: reading, collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The result showed that derivation was the highest frequency of the word-formation process. It was 22%, the acronym was 18%, coinage was 16%, the conversion was 14%, blending was 12%, compounding was 8%, clipping was 6%, borrowing and multiple processes were 2% of each. Besides, the highest social function was to express emotive feeling with 49 % quantity of the frequency. The second higher was to pursue self-identity, achieving politeness was 8%. This study suggested a more in-depth analysis of non-standard languages, such as swear words or taboo words and emoticon that can be done through a social semiotic approach.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze reading comprehension text's cohesion devices from online media. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research is reading comprehension texts from ESL Lounge and British Council. The data were gathered using data and collection technique by Lodico (2006) and were analyzed using Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theory. The findings showed that the dominant grammatical cohesion devices of both websites are references. In contrast, the dominant lexical cohesion devices on both websites are repetition. Further, the dominant grammatical cohesion in ESL Lounge is to justify the writer's position and interact with their readers. Meanwhile, in the British Council, demonstrative references refer to the particular object. The lexical cohesion repetition aims to concentrate the ideas and avoid the readers becoming confused in recognizing the terms in the text.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the President's speech text as a critical discourse analysis taken on the Indonesian Republic Secretariat Cabinet website, conveyed by Ir. Joko Widodo as the 7th president of the Republic of Indonesia. The methodology used by the researchers was a descriptive qualitative method. This textual content analysis is base on Van Dijk's design by which the research unit section is divide into three parts: macro-structure, supra structure and microstructure. The study revealed that the textual content was analyzed thematically or the discourse's subject in the macro-structure. The theme of Jokowi's speech was about Indonesia's excellence. It can be seen clearly from almost all the paragraphs in the statement stating one general subject, namely, about Indonesia's superiority. Then, for the supra-structure, Jokowi's speech text is divided into three main elements: opening, content, and closing, which consisted of two opening paragraphs, eighteen content paragraphs, and two closing paragraphs. The last was microstructure. It was analyzed in a semantic way, which refers to the text's social meaning and the language modes used in the text. Semantically, the text of Jokowi's speech was analyzed from its setting, detail, intention, and presupposition. From Jokowi's information, this expression shows that the speech's overall form contained all the speeches delivered by him; opening, filling, and closing. What has become very clear to set Jokowi apart from many other international public figures is that he uses simple language. The things that Jokowi has brought can be an excellent lesson for people when speaking in front of the audience. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Jokowi’s Speech Text, Van Dijk’s Design
