Abstract

This study investigates the alignment of a 7th-grade English workbook with the Merdeka curriculum syllabus, focusing on the representation of genre-based text components. Employing content analysis, the research examines the workbook's material against the syllabus requirements and genre analysis theory. The instruments used include the 7th-grade workbook, the Merdeka curriculum syllabus, and genre analysis frameworks. The findings reveal significant gaps in the workbook's content, particularly regarding the text structure of conversational and procedural texts, the minimal presence of language features, and the absence of explicit social functions. These shortcomings indicate that the workbook, in its current state, requires substantial improvement to effectively support English language learning in accordance with the Merdeka curriculum. The analysis concludes that the workbook only covers 40% of the competencies outlined in the syllabus. To ensure its suitability for classroom use, teachers need to develop supplementary materials that address the identified gaps and align with the curriculum's objectives.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology tools, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), has led to the integration of technology-assisted learning media into educational settings. This study focuses on the utilization of AI and technology tools by students in the process of English academic writing and its impact on their writing skills. Employing a qualitative approach, data was gathered through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving 73 English education students at an Islamic University in Indonesia. The findings of the study revealed that students employed a total of 15 technology tools, categorized into four types: language structures, sources, saving tracks, and references. According to the participants, the tools used by the participants were able to provide: direct feedback and correction, writing skills development. Specifically, the participants claimed that the tools enhance their understanding of grammatical rules and vocabulary acquisition. In addition, the participants considered that the tools help them to write a more cohesive and coherent essay. This study implies that the incorporation of technology tools in English academic writing has the potential to revolutionize the development and evaluation of writing skills. However, it is essential for students to strike a balance between leveraging these tools and honing their writing skills to ensure writing development.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the process types of the transitivity system from the reading passages and conversational texts of the EFL textbook entitled Modul Pengayaan for seventh-grade junior high school students, which is composed based on the implementation of Kurikulum 2013. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this study are obtained from reading texts and conversational texts (text dialogues). The collected data of the transitivity process presented in sentences and clauses were analyzed using Halliday's transitivity system. The results show that all the process types of transitivity system with 35 processes were found in the reading passages and conversational texts of the textbook, namely: material process with 5 data (14.28%), mental process with 12 data (34.28%), verbal process with 3 data (8.57%), relational process with 13 data (37.14%), behavioral process with 1 data (2.85%), and existential process also with 1 data (2.85%). All the types of transitivity processes have been presented adequately based on Halliday's theory, although the two types of transitivity process (behavioral and existential process) almost have come from ignorance. Therefore, this study suggests that the textbook designer and material developer produce diverse clauses and sentences by using the six process types of transitivity in English written texts, especially in the reading passages and conversational texts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to identify ELT lecturers' readiness to implement online learning. This research involved 30 ELT lecturers from three different time zones in Indonesia: the western, middle, and eastern parts of Indonesia. The study employed an explanatory mixed method in which the quantitative stage was conducted prior to the qualitative stage. Drawing on data from questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), the study found that regardless of the learning mode, lecturers' instruction remains similar except for the assessment process. However, this research also found that geographical location, learning materials, internet connection, and affordability contribute to lecturers' preference in selecting learning modes. This research implies that lecturers are ready to embrace the most of online learning; however, the utmost benefit from online learning can only be attained if the supporting systems are available for both lecturers and students. Abstract

AbstractThe present study analyzed the use of Conversation Analysis in casual conversation and how it can serve as a potential means in language teaching. Casual conversation concerns the type of conversation that people do when they talk just for the sake of talking (Eggins & Slade, 1997). This includes daily conversations among people. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were taken from a casual conversation taking place in Australia regarding a birthday party preparation between a husband and a wife whose native language is Bahasa Indonesia. Data were first transcribed in Bahasa Indonesia using CA conventions, and then were translated into English. The transcription of the conversation attempted to follow the guidelines proposed by Cook (1990) and Bailey (2008). The study found that turn-taking systems, adjacency pairs, overlaps, response tokens, and repairs were evident from the analysis of conversation. The conversation confirms the theories of CA: the occurrence of a large number of response tokens, such as mm hm or yes, various types of adjacency pairs, each speaker speaks one at a time even though there are several gaps and overlaps, and so forth. The study drew the implication of CA to language teaching. CA contributes to language teaching in terms of offering not only the authentic real-life communication, but also the authentic spoken interaction which will encourage learners to be able to produce authentic utterances. Also, CA can serve as a potential means to shape the students’ ability as active participants in the learning process. How to Cite: Hidayat, D. N. Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the role of cross-cultural understanding in interpreting English recount texts. The data of this study were obtained by reviewing documents of a book entitled “Histories of Nations: How their identities were forged” (Furtado, 2017). As a qualitative content analysis, all the data were analyzed qualitatively by classifying, coding and interpreting the data gathered that led us to some conclusions and suggestions. The study found that there were some words and phrases in the recount text that requires cross cultural understanding in order to be able to interpret those texts accurately. Therefore, in interpreting the recount text, it is necessary to understand not only the text in literal meaning, but also the cultural context in a comprehensive way. This focuses on cultural context deals with the history of social organization and religion system. Cross cultural understanding eases the readers to interpret the recount text appropriately. The study suggests that cross cultural understanding should be an important topic to be learnt intensively in learning English language at least at university education level as it will enable students to be capable of understanding English discourses comprehensively.

Abstract

This research aims to discover multicultural values using semiotic analysis in an English textbook. This research is qualitative methodology. The sample of this research is an English textbook under the title ''Big English 5'' used in a private primary school in Indonesia. The data were gathered by documentation of the signs in texts and pictures in that English textbook and were analyzed by using semiotic analysis used Barthes's theory (1977) by integrating various theories to get the multicultural values represented in the English textbook. The findings showed that the texts and pictures represent each multicultural value covered in Big English 5. In addition, the most frequent multicultural value was found about Appreciate Other People's Cultural Products (AOPCP) with eleven items. The other most frequent multicultural value was found about International Cultural (IC) with eleven items. The multicultural values represent in the English textbook in pictures and texts consist of the things, places, foods, and traditions. Unfortunately, the Source Culture (SC) related to Indonesian culture was found merely two items, even though young learners use that English book at a primary school in Indonesia. In conclusion, the English textbook of Big English 5 contained multicultural values which could support young learners' English language process. However, this English textbook needs to add the content of Indonesian culture as the user of that English textbook. Hence, it could acquaint the Indonesian culture through English learning for young learners earlier. Besides, the role of English teachers and students becomes necessary to utilize the English textbook appropriately by designing activities that entangle multicultural values and the use of the English language during the learning process.

Abstract

Individuals often lose confidence in learning and using English due to lack of support or even ridicule from the surrounding environment. In previous research, we found that quite a few people did not understand the importance of English in social life and were more focused on solving problems in the environment, not starting from facing these problems themselves. Through this case we want to change the way an individual thinks about being afraid of the things they face during the learning process, and we want to raise self-confidence in people out there who are learning English. The researcher used a qualitative method, using interviews involving 10th and 11th grade students at SMAN 1 Cileungsi (5 participants at each grade with a total of 10 participants). Based on the data analysis, it was found that many of the students who were studying English had problems with their self-confidence.

Abstract

This research aims to look into the multicultural values represented in the Merdeka Curriculum textbook for Junior High School, "English in Mind." The research employed a qualitative method to acquire specific information regarding multicultural ideals and English textbook data. This content analysis study examined multicultural values using Barthes' four multicultural elements. The research revealed findings indicating that all aspects of multicultural values are included in this EFL textbook. Appreciating Other People's Perspectives is mainly covered in this textbook. The textbook only discusses the multicultural value component, which represents the duty of the world community. ELT specialists and English teachers worldwide have welcomed this new paradigm, which theorizes the integration of regional English variations and multicultural elements to improve intercultural communicative skills. The examined textbook expresses a multicultural viewpoint by accepting and valuing the world's varied customs. Regarding the result of this research, further research is undertaken to identify the approaches, strategies, and procedures for teaching multicultural values to students of varying ages.
