Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates conceptual errors in Grade 11 students’ solutions to sequences-and-series problems and examines the reasoning underlying these errors by distinguishing conceptual, procedural, and operational breakdowns. Methodology – A qualitative descriptive design involved 33 Grade 11 students from a public senior high school in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Students completed a written diagnostic test, followed by semi-structured interviews with selected participants whose responses represented recurrent or analytically significant errors. Written solutions were examined step by step, while interview data were used to reconstruct students’ interpretations, formula choices, and reasoning. Error frequencies served as descriptive support for the qualitative analysis. Findings – Error patterns varied across test items. Procedural errors were most prominent in Item 1 (52%), operational errors in Item 2 (27%), while conceptual errors reached 45% in Item 3 and 76% in Item 5. Conceptual difficulties were particularly evident when students had to interpret contextual information, identify underlying mathematical structures, and select appropriate relationships or formulas. Similar incorrect answers were found to originate from different reasoning processes. Novelty – The study moves beyond classifying incorrect answers by tracing how errors emerge within students’ mathematical reasoning. Linking written solutions with interview explanations distinguishes conceptual misunderstanding from procedural breakdowns and computational inaccuracies. Significance – The findings provide a diagnostic basis for targeted instruction. They enable teachers to match remedial strategies to specific sources of difficulty rather than treating all incorrect responses as equivalent.

Abstract

This study maps publication growth, conceptual structure, and emerging themes in research on innovative learning models for two-variable linear equation systems at the junior high school level. A descriptive bibliometric design was applied to Google Scholar records retrieved on 21 October 2025 using Publish or Perish 8.17.4863.9118 and analyzed with VOSviewer 1.6.20. The search returned 994 records and 4,241 citations; 962 records contained complete publication-year metadata for trend analysis. Publications increased from 132 in 2021 to a peak of 232 in 2023, followed by 225 in 2024 and 170 in the partial 2025 dataset. Co-occurrence mapping retained 59 terms in six clusters. The most substantive themes concerned Contextual Teaching and Learning, mathematical problem solving, student worksheets, realistic mathematics, creative problem solving, and self-efficacy. Generic phrases in the map also revealed metadata noise inherent in Google Scholar text mining. The findings suggest a shift from model comparison toward contextual, digitally supported, problem-oriented, and affect-sensitive learning. The study contributes a transparent research agenda that combines bibliometric evidence with pedagogical theory and Islamic educational values of knowledge, justice, collaboration, and responsible learning.

Abstract

Purpose: Conceptual understanding is fundamental in Complex Analysis because students must coordinate algebraic, geometric, and polar representations to construct advanced mathematical concepts. However, existing studies have primarily focused on identifying students' errors rather than explaining how misconceptions develop across interconnected concepts. This study aimed to map undergraduate students' misconception profiles and identify the developmental trajectory of misconceptions in fundamental Complex Analysis concepts. Methodology: A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving nine mathematics education students who had completed a Complex Analysis course. Data were collected through an open-ended diagnostic test and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Findings: The findings revealed that the most frequent misconception occurred in the application of De Moivre's Theorem (66.7%), followed by the polar form (55.6%), argument and argument in polar form (44.4%), analyticity of complex functions (44.4%), and complex number representation and the Cauchy–Riemann equations (33.3%). Significance: The analysis suggested a hierarchical pattern in students' misconceptions, beginning with complex number representation and extending to argument, polar form, De Moivre's Theorem, and analytic functions. This pattern indicates a possible developmental trajectory of misconceptions across interconnected concepts. These findings suggest a possible developmental trajectory of misconceptions and provide implications for designing instruction that emphasizes conceptual connections and the coordination of multiple mathematical representations.
