Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of self-regulation in enhancing mathematical literacy among high school students solving PISA Space and Shape problems. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through self-regulation questionnaires, PISA-based tasks, and semi-structured interviews from high school students categorized into high, moderate, and low self-regulation groups. The data analysis technique in this study consisting of three stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion. Results reveal a strong correlation between self-regulation and mathematical literacy, with high self-regulation students excelling in formulating, employing, and interpreting mathematical problems. Moderate self-regulation students displayed partial success, while low self-regulation students struggled significantly, particularly in interpreting and validating solutions. The study underscores the importance of self-regulation strategies such as goal-setting, monitoring, and reflection in improving mathematical literacy. Instructional recommendations include structured goal-setting frameworks, reflective practices, and scaffolded tasks to support learners with varying self-regulation levels. These findings contribute to mathematics education by addressing the interplay between self-regulation and problem-solving in the underexplored Space and Shape domain. Future research should expand on these insights through larger, longitudinal studies to further validate the implications of self-regulation in educational contexts.

Abstract

Errors in constructing concepts often occur in mathematics learning, especially in the topic of integer operations. These errors arise because students tend to memorize procedures or rules without fully understanding the underlying concepts. This research aims to analyze students' errors in constructing the concept of integer operations based on assimilation and accommodation. This study uses a qualitative method with 16 students from class VII B at MTs Baitul Hikmah Tempurejo as subjects. The data collection methods in this study included tests and interviews. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of analyzing test results, conducting interviews, and triangulating the data to ensure validity. Based on the analysis and discussion of the data, it can be concluded that all subjects experienced errors in constructing the concept. Four types of concept construction errors were identified: Pseudo Construction, Construction Hole, Mis-logical Construction, and Mis-analogical Construction. Pseudo Construction occurs when a student merely memorizes phrases like "negative meets negative, the result is positive" without a deeper understanding of the concept. Construction Hole occurs when a student provides incorrect answers due to incomplete understanding or failure to comprehend the problem. Mis-logical Construction happens when a student makes an incorrect assumption or conclusion, while Mis-analogical Construction involves false analogies, such as equating the concept of adding negative numbers with adding positive numbers. The results of this study are expected to provide insights into the types and causes of errors in concept construction made by students, which can then be used as a basis for developing effective learning strategies to help students understand concepts correctly.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the application of vertical organizational communication between leaders and employees in building job satisfaction in the Spare Parts Division of PT Astra Motor Main Dealer, Bengkulu City. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method and purposive sampling technique, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the application of vertical communication between leaders and employees in the Spare Parts Division of PT Astra Motor Main Dealer, Bengkulu City has been running quite well but still faces several obstacles. Vertical communication is carried out in two directions, namely communication from leaders to subordinates (downward communication) and from subordinates to leaders (upward communication). When communication is carried out openly, clearly, and two-way, employees feel more appreciated, better understand the tasks assigned, and are more motivated to contribute to achieving company goals. However, there are still obstacles that hinder the effectiveness of communication, such as delays in information, lack of feedback from superiors, and miscommunication that arises due to differences in perception between leaders and subordinates. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the quality of communication through openness, timely delivery of messages, and strengthening two-way communication channels so that vertical communication can function optimally in building employee job satisfaction.

Abstract

The low level of numeracy skills among junior high school students in linear function topics indicates the need for more contextual and meaningful mathematics instruction. This study explores the integration of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) through the incorporation of local Banyuwangi culture as an instructional context to enhance students’ numeracy skills. Local cultural elements such as the Petik Laut tradition, Kawah Ijen tourism, Osing traditional house architecture, and Banyuwangi community economic activities were embedded in learning modules, student worksheets, and numeracy assessment tasks related to linear functions. Employing a research and development approach with a modified 4D model, this study involved eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Banyuwangi. The results indicate that the CRT-based learning materials grounded in Banyuwangi culture met the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Furthermore, the implementation resulted in significant improvements in students’ numeracy skills, as indicated by complete learning mastery and moderate to high n-gain scores. These results suggest that positioning local culture as a source of mathematical contexts within a CRT framework not only enhances students’ understanding of linear functions but also fosters more relevant, meaningful, and culturally connected mathematics learning.

Abstract

.The thinking process is crucial in identifying students' challenges in formulating logical arguments, particularly when proving geometric concepts such as Ceva's Theorem. This study investigates the cognitive processes of students with high and medium mathematical ability to solve proof problems related to Ceva's Theorem.Adopting a qualitative approach, the research employed a case study design, utilising data collection techniques including tests, interviews, observations, documentation, and triangulation. The research subjects comprised two undergraduate students of Mathematics Education, representing a medium and high mathematical ability category. The research findings revealed that students with high mathematical abilityprogressedthrough assimilation, accommodation, and equilibrium stages in proving Ceva's Theorem. In contrast, students with moderate mathematical ability experienced the disequilibrium phase first beforeadvancing to assimilation, accommodation, and equilibrium. The fundamental difference between these two groups lies in their ability to identify the question posed in the problem andcorrectly identify the theorem to be proved. This research provides valuable insights into the cognitive processes involved in mathematical proof, offering an in-depth understanding of how students approach the proof of Ceva's Theorem.

Abstract

Learning activities were changed from face-to-face to full-online due to the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2019. Online learning through WhatsApp Group (WAG) was used by a mathematics teacher in higher education program in the early 2020. However, the learning result showed that 75% of preservice teacher were unable to accomplish their elementary linear algebra material. The combination of online learning through asynchronous method and synchronous learning was an alternative solution to solve the problem and enable preservice teachers having virtual face-to-face interactions with their lecturers. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the improvement in preservice teachers' learning outcomes and responses to synchronous and asynchronous learning. The research design used was one group posttest-only with 23 subjects were selected by clustered random sampling. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. The test results showed that learning outcomes after synchronous and asynchronous learning was effective. While the questionnaire results expressed most preservice teachers gave a positive response to both learning methods. Thus, the combination of the two methods could improve the effectiveness of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is recommended that higher education institutions provide innovative e-learning platforms for preservice teachers in developing further online learning methods.

Abstract

This study examines indications of the effectiveness of a digital simulation-based learning approach in supporting students’ understanding of queueing models using real-life data. Aquasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, supported by qualitative interview data, was conducted with 31 undergraduate mathematics education students at the University of Jember. The ExtendSim software was used to create interactive queueing simulations that allowed students to explore parameters such as arrival rate, service rate, and waiting time. Validity and reliability tests were conducted using item–total (Pearson) correlations and Cronbach’s alpha, with results indicating high validity (r > 0.5, p < 0.05) and high internal consistency (a > 0.80). A paired ttest showed a statistically significant increase in scores within this sample (t = 8.89, p < 0.001). Students’ perceptions of the simulation were highly positive, with an average Likert score of 3.23 (very high). Qualitative interviews further indicated that the simulations helped students visualize queue dynamics and relate theoretical concepts to real-life contexts. There were also indications of increased motivation, engagement, and computational thinking skills; however, these findings are limited by the single-site sample and the one-group study design.
