Abstract

This research aims to measure the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning Model with RAHMA Syntax (PjBL-RAHMA) in improving prospective biology teachers’ critical thinking skills. RAHMA is an acronym for Recognizing Problems, Analyzing Problems, Handling Projects, Monitoring Progress, and Assessing Results. This research was quasi-experimental with a posttest-only control group design. This research involved 223 prospective biology teachers from three well-accredited public universities in Sumatra, Indonesia. Data from the critical thinking skills test results were analyzed using JASP software. Prospective biology teachers’ achievement of critical thinking skills after learning using the PjBL-RAHMA model showed that the experimental class was better than the control class. This research concludes that PjBL-RAHMA effectively improves prospective biology teachers’ critical thinking skills. This research also explains the contribution of each PjBL-RAHMA syntax in improving prospective biology teachers’ critical thinking skills. The PjBL-RAHMA syntax has increased prospective biology teachers’ ability to understand and analyze real-life problems, providing good reasons, logical thinking, and creating solutions to problems, especially in pedagogy.

Abstract

Nagari Silokek is being developed towards the Silokek Geopark, but the topographic structure of this nagari is prone to floods and landslides. This threat must be minimized by intensively introducing disaster issues, one of which is integration into learning. The purpose of this service is to improve the professional and pedagogical competence of science / science teachers in implementing Problem Based Learning (PBL) which is stimulated by contextual content, namely disaster issues in Silokek. The method of this community service is disaster issue-based PBL modeling training and making interactive learning media to support PBL learning in the form of Kahoot and Quizziz. This activity is complemented by a visit to the biology and science learning research product stand. The results of the training evaluation questionnaire showed that all participant (100%) expressed interest in the PkM activities carried out, becoming motivated to improve the learning process in the classroom. The role of the PkM team was also maximized in providing knowledge updates for participants. The modeling designed also runs well through sharp and precise explanations of the needs of the participants.

Abstract

This meta-analysis investigates the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills in science education. A total of 42 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2024 were analyzed, covering diverse educational levels and scientific disciplines. The analysis revealed a large average effect size (ES = 0.798; 95% CI: 0.782–0.813), indicating a strong positive impact of PBL. The low standard error (SE = 0.043–0.060) reflects high estimation precision. Statistical tests, including funnel plot symmetry, Trim-and-Fill analysis (p = 0.991), and Egger’s regression test (p = 0.947), confirm the absence of significant publication bias. Moreover, residual heterogeneity was minimal (τ² = 0.000), validating the appropriateness of the fixed-effects model. These findings provide robust empirical evidence that PBL is consistently effective across various contexts in improving students’ 21st-century competencies. The study offers meaningful implications for educators and policymakers in designing science learning strategies that foster higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the development of LKPD (Student Worksheet) for enhancing critical thinking skills of elementary school students. The LKPD used has not yet captured the students' attention. The LKPD has not been able to improve students' learning motivation because it does not align with their learning styles. LKPD serves as teaching material used by teachers to facilitate the delivery of content and achieve learning objectives. This study aims to develop LKPD and assess its validity using the Inquiry model to improve critical thinking skills in Science education about the conservation of natural resources in the 4th-grade class. The type of research used is research and development (R&D), employing the 4-D model. This model consists of four development stages: define, design, development, and dissemination. Based on the results of the validation of LKPD using the Inquiry model to enhance critical thinking skills, the LKPD is deemed feasible for use. The material aspect validation result was 85.41% (valid), the design aspect validation result was 86.53% (valid), and the language aspect validation result was 94.44% (very valid). Therefore, the LKPD using the Inquiry model to improve critical thinking skills is valid.

Abstract

21st-century education demands that students not only master content but also possess scientific communication skills, thereby requiring innovative learning approaches to develop these competencies. The STEM approach, which integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, along with the RANDAI learning model culturally-based and problem-solving oriented is considered effective in fostering such skills. This development research employed the Plomp model, consisting of three phases: preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment. The object of the study was a RANDAI Teaching Module integrated with STEM, with Grade VIII students as the subjects. The instruments used included tools for assessing validity, practicality, and effectiveness to measure students’ scientific communication and argumentation skills. Data analysis for validity and practicality employed descriptive analysis, while effectiveness was analyzed using ANOVA tests with SPSS software. The results showed that the module is valid with a score of 87.33%, highly practical with scores of 92.44% from teachers and 91.24% from students, and effective in enchance students' scientific communication skills

Abstract

The Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model has been widely applied in biology learning to encourage students' science process skills. However, the extent of its contribution to improving science process skills has not been thoroughly summarized. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of the PjBL model on science process skills using a meta-analysis. Through a systematic literature review using the PRISMA approach, seven journal articles and theses were selected that met the inclusion criteria. The effect size for each study was calculated using Cohen's d. The analysis showed that all studies had very large effect sizes, ranging from 1.67 to 5.35. This finding indicates that PjBL consistently improves science process skills such as observing, classifying, predicting, measuring, inferring, and communicating. The syntax of PjBL, which involves real, structured activities, also optimally supports the development of these skills. Thus, PjBL can be recommended as an effective learning approach to improve students' science process skills in biology.
