Abstract

Education is a learning process to develop students without force, but students can develop themselves if they feel free physically and mentally. The Independent Curriculum is a national education policy that emphasizes student-centered learning and character building. However, this curriculum is often understood merely as a response to the demands of the times, without being studied in depth from the perspective of the philosophical foundations of national education. On the other hand, Ki Hajar Dewantara’s thinking places character education, responsible freedom of learning, and education without coercion at the core of the educational process. This study aims to analyze the relevance of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s educational thinking to the Independent Curriculum in the framework of character education in higher education. This study used a literature review method with a conceptual-philosophical approach, with primary sources in the form of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s works and official documents of the Independent Curriculum, as well as secondary sources from relevant scientific literature. The results of the study showed that Ki Hajar Dewantara’s educational principles are strongly aligned with the direction and spirit of the Independent Curriculum. The Independent Curriculum can be understood as the actualization of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s educational values in contemporary educational policy.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of electrocoagulation using aluminum electrodes to stabilize pH and remove pollutants from various real wastewater sources in Surabaya, Indonesia, including laundromats, fast food restaurants, campus canteens, mechanical workshops, and tofu industries. A batch-mode electrocoagulation process was conducted using 10 A of current over 60 minutes, and the performance was evaluated based on pH changes, turbidity, and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal. The highest TSS removal efficiency of 98% was observed in machine shop wastewater, while laundromat samples also achieved high performance with 97% reduction. Electrocoagulation demonstrated strong pH stability in effluents with buffering compounds such as those from campus canteens and workshops, whereas fluctuating pH and turbidity levels were found in tofu and fast-food effluents, indicating the need for process optimization. Turbidity decreased significantly across all samples, confirming effective floc formation during electrolysis. The findings confirm that electrocoagulation is a promising method for treating both domestic and urban wastewater. However, integrating additional processes such as adsorption or filtration is recommended to enhance performance for complex wastewater compositions and ensure compliance with discharge standards.

Abstract

Corrosion significantly impacts public safety and the economy, causing substantial financial losses, infrastructure damage, and hazardous incidents across various industries. Researchers investigated the effects of pH, current density, and corrosion inhibitors (potassium chromate and potassium nitrate) on iron corrosion by measuring weight loss of iron samples immersed in sulfuric acid over time. The addition of inhibitors showed that KNO3 was more effective in reducing the corrosion rate, with values of 4.992068, 3.744051, 2.736034, 1.728017, and 0.608008 mils per year, compared to K2CrO4, which resulted in 9.728132, 7.296099, 5.472066, 3.648033, and 1.216017 mils per year. Corrosion rate increased as pH decreased, with Fe showing corrosion at pH 6.21, 5.18, 4.26, 3.85, and 3.22. The relationship between current density and corrosion rate was found to be proportional, with voltage values of 1.31, 2.24, 3.16, 5.11, and 7.1 amperes per square meter (A/m^2). This study confirms that inhibitor type, acidity (pH), and current density significantly influence corrosion behavior, where increasing pH and current density can accelerate corrosion, and potassium nitrate (KNO3) demonstrates superior corrosion inhibition compared to potassium chromate (K2CrO4).

Abstract

This study examines how strict parenting practices shape children’s honesty and psychosocial development. Using a descriptive qualitative field approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with parents and children, direct observation of children’s behavior, and a review of relevant literature on parenting styles. The findings show that strict parenting is characterized by high control, rigid rules, and demanding expectations, often accompanied by limited emotional support. While such an approach is intended to cultivate discipline and responsibility, it may also generate adverse outcomes, including reduced self-confidence, emotional suppression, and tendencies toward dishonesty. Empirical evidence from two female respondents reveals contrasting experiences. The first reported a perceived lack of parental trust, leading to concealment of information and reluctance to communicate personal issues, despite recognizing parental care and protection. The second, an only child, experienced intensive supervision alongside academic support, which helped prevent engagement in negative behaviors but constrained emotional expression and autonomy. Overall, the study demonstrates that strict parenting produces ambivalent effects: it can reinforce behavioral control yet undermine emotional well-being and openness. The findings underscore the importance of balancing discipline with supportive communication and trust to foster honesty and healthy character development in children.

Abstract

Palm kernel meal contains polysaccharide compounds, including galactomannan, which is made up of galactose and mannose units. This study aims to extract and identify the structure of galactomannan from palm kernel meal using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Extraction was carried out using a hot water extraction method with a material-to-solvent ratio of 1:5 at 80°C for 60 minutes, followed by precipitation with 96% ethanol, subsequent freeze-drying, and followed by characterization through FTIR and NMR to confirm the presence of characteristic functional groups associated with galactomannan. The extraction yielded 0,77% then the FTIR spectrum revealed strong bands at 1065.67, 1032.65, and 1009.16 cm⁻¹, indicating the presence of C–O and C–O–C stretching related to glycosidic bonds—key features of the galactomannan polysaccharide structure. The 1H-NMR spectrum exhibited a distinct signal for the anomeric proton in the range of approximately 5.0–5.4 ppm, with the protons from the C2–C6 positions appearing between 3.2 and 4.1 ppm. Additionally, the 13C-NMR spectrum displayed a peak for the anomeric carbon around 102–105 ppm, along with other ring carbon peaks in the range of 60–85 ppm, which align with the structure of galactomannan. These findings confirm that palm kernel meal holds promise as a source of galactomannan for developing polysaccharide-based biomaterials

Abstract

CO2 in industrial gas streams reduces process efficiency, corrodes equipment, and affects product quality. Additionally, CO2 emissions contribute to climate change and global warming. To mitigate these effects, CO2 removal through absorption is essential. Absorption involves contacting a gas mixture with a liquid absorbent to dissolve the gas component. This study examines the effect of CO2 flow rate (V) and NaOH flow rate (L) on CO2 absorption efficiency. The experiment involved preparing 33 liters of 0.1 normal NaOH and 250 milliliters of 0.1 normal HCl, followed by solution standardization using methyl orange. CO2 was introduced through valve V-4 while NaOH was pumped into the absorption column. Samples were taken after steady state was reached, and titration with 0.1 normal HCl determined residual NaOH concentration. Flow rate variations of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 liters per minute were tested. Results align with literature, indicating that as CO2 flow rate increases, NaOH flow rate also rises. However, the L/V ratio and absorbed CO2 amount decrease due to reduced contact time, lowering absorption efficiency. This study highlights the importance of optimizing flow rates to enhance CO2 capture.
