Abstract

Everyone has an identity and language is a sign of that. The associations in a person's environment, with whom they hang out, and where they learn can all have an impact on their identities. This research aims to explain the extent to which language is still used as a symbol of human identity. The language used every day can be a source of pride. Evidence of this pride can be seen from the development of its use which is dynamic. Language has a very important function to express cultural treasures. However, language over time has also developed. Challenges in learning a foreign language can also be influenced by the use of a person's everyday language. Students have their challenges in learning a foreign language, therefore it can be seen whether the everyday language they use has an influence when they learn a foreign language.

Abstract

The present study focused on teachers’ perceptions of how teacher talk works in the classroom and some challenges they might encounter during initiating interaction to encourage students. A classroom observation was done to portray the data of the learning process and teachers’ interview was also conducted to discover insights about teacher talk and the challenges encountered in the classroom interaction. Findings demonstrated that the teachers enacted dominant English communication as the input rather than using students’ first language. They felt increasing the use of the target language would be more challenging as it is influenced by some aspects from both teachers and students’ motivation, attitude, and proficiency. In addition, teacher talk is varied in some extents based on the teacher and student factors. The findings also showed that teacher talk mostly occurred in the form of asking questions, giving directions, explaining the lesson, and praising the students. In addition, as the students were considered young learners, it was found that classroom interaction and language choice must be adjustable in order to make communication become more effective. Abstract

Speaking is often perceived as one of the most challenging skills for EFL learners in Indonesian Islamic Boarding Schools (IBS), where limited opportunities for authentic practice and fear of making mistakes constrain students’ confidence and participation. This study aimed to enhance students’ speaking confidence and active participation through the integration of interactive games within a designated Language Area environment in a private Islamic Boarding School in East Java. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles involving six female students. The intervention incorporated Word Chain and Guessing Game activities to create structured yet low-anxiety speaking opportunities. Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, and students’ reflective questionnaires, and analyzed descriptively to trace changes in participation and perceived confidence across cycles. The findings indicate a progressive increase in students’ active engagement, rising from 50% participation in Cycle 1 to full participation in Cycle 2. Questionnaire responses further revealed reduced fear of making mistakes, increased willingness to speak, and positive perceptions of vocabulary recall during game-based activities. These findings directly address the research objective of fostering speaking confidence and participation within an IBS context. The study concludes that interactive games can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to promote a supportive and low-anxiety speaking environment aligned with students’ daily institutional routines. However, the small sample size and short duration of implementation limit generalizability, suggesting the need for longitudinal studies examining sustained impacts on speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the core beliefs of English teachers facilitating English language learning in Islamic boarding schools. Using a phenomenological research method, the research explores the lived experiences of six participants, four students (S1, S2, S3, S4) and two teachers (T1, T2), regarding English learning in Islamic educational settings. The study conducted detailed, semi-structured interviews and observations at a privately-run Islamic boarding school in Pasuruan regency, East Java, Indonesia. The results reveal that the teachers face significant challenges including inadequate technological resources, poor student motivation, and beliefs that religious knowledge supersedes English proficiency. Likewise, the students initially demonstrated low motivation due to limited extracurricular activities and perceptions that English conflicts with religious studies. However, institutional interventions through interactive techniques, modern teaching practices, and cultural exchange programs gradually improved student attitudes. Adaptive strategies emerged, incorporating Islamic values into language education while emphasizing Englishs practical applications. The findings suggest that culturally sensitive and innovative teaching strategies are crucial for effective English language acquisition in religious educational settings. By integrating Islamic principles into language instruction, educators can enhance student engagement while preserving cultural identity. This study provides important perspectives on English language learning in Islamic boarding schools and presents recommendations for educators and policymakers to enhance language education in similar contexts, while maintaining respect for religious and cultural values.

The primary objective of this program is to improve teachers’ professional knowledge and skills in planning and implementing learning activities that integrate international business correspondence and cross-border communication. The implementation method involved an initial assessment through open-ended interviews to identify existing challenges and the teachers’ level of understanding, followed by an intensive workshop emphasizing content reinforcement and practical exercises in professional correspondence, and concluded with a final assessment using open-ended questionnaires to evaluate competency development after the program. This activity engaged 10 English teachers from local vocational high schools, of whom approximately 80% were found to have limited understanding of the concepts and practical applications of the targeted material. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills, particularly in terms of understanding standard formats, using professional language, and recognizing the importance of developing international business communication competencies for SMK students. Therefore, this program has proven valuable in strengthening the professional capacity of English teachers and is recommended to be conducted continuously to ensure the relevance of English instruction in vocational schools with the evolving dynamics of global industry needs. Keywords: English Skill; International Business Correspondence; Teacher Development; SMK; EFL.

Abstract

Using sophisticated technology in EFL has been a source of considerable debate. As a part of the Web 2.0 movement, Prezi lets users generate, produce, and preserve virtual demonstrations. While a substantial study has been conducted on the benefits and downsides of utilizing Prezi presentations, there is scarce research on students' experiences with using Prezi. The study aims to look at pupils' perspectives on using Prezi in learning English to fill the gap. Twenty students from a private secondary school in Mojokerto, Indonesia, were examined. This exploratory qualitative case study used a purposive sampling strategy. They answered ten interview questions, which the researchers examined using content analysis. The findings revealed that students' experiences using Prezi and making Prezi demonstrations could be divided into four primary topics: serviceability, effectiveness, design, and hindrances. Using Prezi, students experienced producing more interactive visuals for their production than standard PowerPoint slides. In line with this study, Prezi's revolutionary features transform the report from a monotonous and direct way into a fascinating, stunning, practical, and nonlinear style. The findings of this study, in practice, demand the implementation of academic tutorials for classroom teachers to construct their core principles of teaching utilizing the Prezi presentation.
