Abstract

This study aims to analyze the comparison of character education models in Japan and Indonesia and their implications for strengthening Islamic education. Character education has become a central focus in global education systems as it plays a crucial role in developing students’ moral values and social responsibility beyond cognitive intelligence. This study employed a qualitative approach with a comparative method. Data were collected through documentation studies of books, scientific journals, and relevant policy documents and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that both Japan and Indonesia place moral development as an essential component of their national education systems. However, each country demonstrates distinctive characteristics and approaches shaped by their philosophical, social, and cultural foundations. The comparison indicates that the effectiveness of character education is determined not merely by the number of instructional hours but by the consistency of implementation, the strength of supportive cultural environments, and the synergy among schools, families, and communities in fostering students’ character development. These character education models also have implications for strengthening Islamic education through curricular integration and the development of moderate, tolerant, and globally minded character.

Abstract

The tension between preserving Islamic-Malay tradition and the demands of modern educational transformation is a fundamental challenge for Islamic education institutions in the contemporary era. This study aims to systematically analyze the dialectics between Islamic tradition and Malay culture in building education in the modern era, focusing on mapping transformation patterns, identifying conceptual tensions, and formulating an adaptive integration model. This research employs a qualitative approach with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework. The study population consisted of scientific articles indexed in Google Scholar, Scopus, and SINTA, with a purposive sampling technique applied based on explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were extracted using a structured extraction sheet and analyzed through thematic synthesis. From 184 identified articles, 25 met the full inclusion criteria. Results reveal five consistent themes: adaptive institutional transformation, Islamic-Malay identity as dynamic social capital, the dual impact of globalization, integration of Malay cultural values in curriculum, and the dominance of single-context studies. This study concludes that tradition and transformation function as mutually reinforcing dialectical forces, and proposes the concept of a dialectical integrative model as a pedagogical framework for building relevant and characterful Islamic education.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic education in ASEAN is undergoing a complex transformation shaped by curriculum modernization, the prevention of radicalism, and the need to preserve Islamic identity amid globalization. This study aims to examine patterns of Islamic education transformation in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam by focusing on policy orientation, curriculum reform, and institutional responses to contemporary challenges. Using library research with a qualitative-comparative approach, the study analyzes Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed journal articles, government policy documents, international agency reports, and official documents published between 2019 and 2025. The findings show that all five countries integrate moderate Islamic values into their national education systems, although the mechanisms, intensity, and degree of state intervention vary according to each country’s historical and political context. The study also finds that radicalism in Islamic educational institutions is more sustainably addressed through critical literacy and community-based preventive approaches than through purely coercive regulation. These findings imply that Islamic education reform in ASEAN should balance curriculum modernization, institutional accountability, local religious authority, and dialogical identity formation. The study concludes that Islamic education transformation in ASEAN is a multilayered negotiation between tradition, state policy, religious moderation, and global change.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Islamic education during the colonial period and the intellectual responses of Muslim scholars to Western educational hegemony through a systematic literature review (SLR). Colonial expansion introduced modern secular schooling systems that significantly reshaped educational institutions in many Muslim societies. These reforms produced a dual educational structure in which Western schools operated alongside traditional Islamic institutions such as madrasah and pesantren, influencing knowledge hierarchies, language policies, and educational authority. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, this study systematically analyzed scholarly publications retrieved from the Scopus database to identify major themes and theoretical perspectives in the literature. The findings reveal four key patterns: the institutional transformation of Islamic education under colonial policies, the emergence of educational dualism, the intellectual responses of Muslim scholars to Western epistemological dominance, and the growing relevance of decolonial perspectives in contemporary educational debates. The review highlights the resilience of Islamic educational institutions in preserving religious knowledge traditions while engaging with modern knowledge. These findings contribute to discussions on the decolonization of education and the development of culturally grounded educational frameworks in Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study examines the role of religiosity in student character formation within vocational education by analyzing the mediating effects of learning motivation and literacy. Employing a quantitative correlational design with an ex post facto approach, the study analyzes survey data collected from 381 students enrolled in public vocational secondary schools in Indonesia (N = 381). Religiosity is conceptualized as a multidimensional construct encompassing belief, practice, experience, and social consequences, while student character is defined as an integrated set of cognitive, moral, and socio-emotional dispositions. Data were analyzed using regression-based mediation analysis within a structural equation modeling framework, indicating that religiosity has a positive and statistically significant direct effect on student character. In addition, learning motivation and literacy function as significant mediating variables, demonstrating partial mediation in the relationship between religiosity and character formation. These findings suggest that religious values influence character development not only through direct moral orientation, but also indirectly by strengthening students’ motivational engagement and interpretive capacities. By empirically testing a mediated model of character formation, this study advances a mechanism-oriented understanding of how values, motivation, and literacy interact in vocational education. The findings contribute theoretically to research on character education and religious education, while practically underscoring the importance of integrating ethical values, motivational support, and literacy development in holistic vocational education models.

Abstract

This study examines the relationships among Quran memorization activity, emotional intelligence, prophetic character, and student discipline in pesantren, with prophetic character operationalised through the FAST framework as a mediating mechanism. Employing a quantitative causal explanatory design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 95 students at Pondok Pesantren Jamiatul Qurro Palembang. Structural Equation Modelling with a partial least squares approach was used to analyse direct and indirect relationships among the variables. The findings indicate that Quran memorization activity and emotional intelligence both have significant positive effects on prophetic character and student discipline. Prophetic character emerged as the strongest predictor of discipline β = 0.412, p < .001 and significantly mediated the effects of Quran memorization β = 0.157, p = .002 and emotional intelligence β = 0.186, p < .001 on disciplined behaviour. These results suggest that discipline in religious educational settings is best understood as an internally regulated outcome shaped by moral internalisation and emotional self-regulation. The study contributes to character education literature by empirically validating prophetic character as a central mechanism linking religious practice and psychological capacity to behavioural outcomes in pesantren education.
