Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between mental readiness and learning motivation of English Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. This research method is quantitative and uses correlation. The instrument used is a questionnaire using a Likert scale as an assessment analysis, which uses a scale of mental readiness and learning motivation. In this study, the questionnaire was distributed using Google Forms, and the analysis technique used was descriptive analysis. In this study, there is a correlation between mental readiness with offline learning motivation in the post-pandemic era 2021-2022 students of English education at Universitas Negeri Makassar. This is because the subject matter is relevant to students' affective, cognitive, and psychomotor mental readiness. The ability to restrain one's emotions so that they do not explode and ultimately impact reasonable behaviour is referred to as emotional management. Keywords – Mental Readiness, Learning Motivation

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact of using English short stories in building Students’ characters. It employs a qualitative research method with a qualitative descriptive design involving 7 students in the third grade of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this research found that the study reveals five impacts on students’ characters. The impacts are, students’ behavior that lead to positive behavior, increasing students’ empathy and responsibility character, help students prevent the negative traits, and the last one is students find that there are positive impacts of using English short stories including, increasing language skills, increasing the interest of literacy, and also there is positive character formation in students.  Keywords— Factors, Students' Understanding, Daily English Vocabulary.

Abstract

The goal of the study is to determine how taking oral quizzes affects students' ability to speak. Pre-experimental design with a single group pretest-posttest was employed in this study. The SMAN 4 Makassar second grade pupils for the academic year 2023–2024 served as the research population. Purposive sampling was used in this study, and the sample consisted of 20 students from Class XI.10 at SMAN 4 Makassar. The study's conclusions showed that after receiving treatment, students' speaking abilities significantly improved. The difference in mean scores between the pre-test (60.75) and post-test (69.20) indicates this. Students' speaking skills were able to increase as a result of the oral quiz technique, as evidenced by the mean score of the students. Students may be required by this method to actively participate in their education, particularly when it comes to speaking skills. Additionally, teachers can utilize this tactic as a substitute or a guide to pique students' interest in the learning process..Key words-- Speaking Skill; Oral Quizzes; Strategy

Abstract

This research aims to improve the reading comprehension of students at SMKN 6 Makassar using the scaffolded reading method. The research method used was pre-experimental with one experimental group. The research subject was class XI fashion 3 as the experimental group. The research data is collected by test. The experimental group was given a pre-test and post-test to measure students' abilities in reading comprehension. The population of this research was class XI students majoring in Fashion at SMKN 6 Makassar. The sample of this research was 33 students of class XI Fashion 3. The results of this research is significance score for the learning outcome variable is 0.000 which is lower than significance degree is <0.05. It can be concluded there is a significant influence of using scaffolded reading method on the reading comprehension.Keyword: Reading Comprehension, Scaffolded Reading Method

Abstract

This study aimed to discover suitable types of online learning to be implemented at SMPN 3 Tandukkalua. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method to achieve the research objective. The data were collected through interview. The subjects of the research were 2 english teachers at SMPN 3Tandukkalua. The subjects were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. Based on the result of the study, the teachers perceived that Asynchronous learning is suitable to be implemented at SMPN 3 Tandukkalua in online English learning. There are some reasons why they chose Asynchronous learning,namely it is flexibel, quick and easy feedback,enhancing learning effectiveness. It is also found that the teaching methods used by the teachers in asynchronous online English learning are Self  Directed Learning method combined with Expository method. The use of this method enhance students’activeness in learning,students’ motivation in learning,students’ independence,students’ creativity and problem-solving skill.Keywords: Online learning, Self  Directed Learning, Expository method.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions on the use of coping strategies to overcome burnout when writing for the thesis of English Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative method. The participants in this study were students in class 2020. Data collection was done through interviews. Based on the results of the interview in general, participants have positive and negative perceptions of the use of coping strategies in overcoming burnout using problem-focus coping and emotional-focus coping. The data results show that students have a more positive perception of the use of coping strategies in overcoming burnout when writing a thesis.Keywords: Perception, Coping strategy, Burnout.

Abstract

The  objective  of  this  research  was  to  find  out  whether  the  use  of  social  media  YouTube  is effective  in  improving  the  speaking  skill  of  the  first-grade  students  of  SMA  Negeri  2  Gowa. This  research  took  place  at  SMA  Negeri  2  Gowa.  The  population  of  this  research  was  the students  of  SMA  Negeri  2  Gowa.  The  researcher  used  purposive  sampling  technique.  The instrument of this research was a speaking test which was administered as a pre-test and post- test. Based on the result  of the mean score,  the researcher found  that the use of social media YouTube  can  improve  students  speaking  abilities.  It  was  proved  by  the  result  of  the  post-test which  was  higher  than  result  of  the  pre-test  (29.11  >  46.06).  Furthermore,  the  researcher concluded that the use of social media YouTube effective in improving the speaking skill of the first-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Gowa. Keywords— improving, social media YouTube, speaking skill

Abstract

This research aims to explore the students’ self-confidence in speaking English through speech training, and to know the impacts of English speech training on students’ self-confidence. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method, with interview and observation as data instruments. The subjects of this research were female students in class IX MTSS at Pondok Pesantren Modern Rahmatul Asri Enrekang, with the 10 female students as the respondents in class IX MTSS Rahmatul Asri. In this research, the researcher analyzed data by collecting, reducing, presenting data and drawing conclusions. Based on the research results, it was found that students had a good self-confidence in speaking English through English speech training, and English speech training has good impacts on students’ self-confidence development, as evidenced by the results of interview and direct observation. It can be concluded that students can train and increase their confidence in English through English speech training. Keywords: Self-confidence, Speaking, English Speech.

Abstract

The study aimed to discover (1) The socio-afffective strategies students use in learning speaking skills. (2) How students applied the socio-affective strategies in learning speaking skills. This study is a type of qualitative research that uses qualitative descriptive methods to collect the data. Interviews and documentation were used as the instruments to collect the data. Five students were selected as participants by using a purposive random sampling technique. This study showed that the students used all types of socio-affective strategies: asking questions, cooperating with others, lowering anxiety, self-reinforcement, self-talk, taking someone’ temperature, empathizing with others, and social-mediating. Eventually, among those socio-affective strategies, the students frequently ask questions, cooperate with others, and engage in self-talk. The researcher concluded that the socio-affective strategies are helpful for them to interact with teachers and friends, build self-confidence, and enhance their knowledge of English, especially in speaking skills.Keywords: Socio-Affective Strategies and Speaking Skills.
