Abstract

This study investigates pragmatic features in the 2022 film The Swimmers, focusing on the speech acts and conversational implicatures employed by the main characters, Sara and Yusra Mardini. Addressing a gap in previous research that rarely combines these two frameworks within a single cinematic discourse, this study explores how language functions as a reflection of emotion, power, and social reality in the film. Using a qualitative approach, 30 utterances in 12 key descriptive scenes (approximately 45 minutes of dialogue) were analyzed based on Searle's speech act theory and Grice's conversational implicatures. The research findings reveal five types of speech acts: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative, with assertive acts being the most frequent. Implicatures primarily emerge through violations of the maxims of quality and relation, which convey hidden meanings and emotional tension. The results highlight the crucial role of pragmatic strategies in establishing character identity and narrative depth. Pedagogically, this study demonstrates that film dialogue can serve as authentic material to enhance the pragmatic competence of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, while also contributing to film studies by illustrating how cinematic language reflects real-world communication.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Sampali Village, Percut Sei Tuan Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency, with the aim of improving the productivity and economic value of Cavendish bananas through the application of tissue culture technology. The background of this activity stems from the condition of local farmers who still rely on conventional cultivation methods using non-uniform and disease-prone seedlings, resulting in low productivity and poor harvest quality. The implementation method employed the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach, which emphasizes the active involvement of farmers throughout the entire process, including preparation, training, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation stages. The training provided covered the development of superior seedlings using tissue culture techniques, integrated pest management, product packaging, and digital marketing strategies. The results of the program showed a significant increase in farmers’ knowledge and skills, with an average improvement of 85%. Tissue-cultured seedlings demonstrated a growth success rate of 92% in the field, while land productivity increased by up to 32% compared to previous cultivation methods. In addition, farmers’ income increased by 22% due to optimized yields and diversification of banana-based products. This activity also strengthened collaboration networks among farmer groups, village cooperatives, and local businesses. Overall, the application of tissue culture technology proved effective in enhancing production efficiency, farmer independence, and local economic sustainability in Sampali Village.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the challenges of educational supervision in the digital era based on the perceptions of teachers and principals at SD Negeri 011 Samarinda Seberang. The study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design involving 10 teachers and 1 principal as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results of the study reveal four main challenges: (1) limitations in digital infrastructure in the form of unstable devices and internet networks; (2) a digital competency gap between senior and junior teachers; (3) changes in communication dynamics that have led to feedback becoming more formal and less in-depth; and (4) an increase in teachers' workload due to the demands of technological adaptation. The findings also identified strategies that have begun to be implemented, namely collaborative learning among teachers and a blended supervision model that combines online and offline approaches. The study concluded that the challenges of digital supervision are multidimensional, requiring a holistic approach that includes improving human resource capacity, upgrading infrastructure, and developing adaptive supervision models. The practical implication of this study is the need for policies that support comprehensive digital transformation at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study examines the character development of Dory in the animated film "Finding Dory," directed by Andrew Stanton, through the framework of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The research aims to identify the various needs reflected in Dory's character and analyze how the fulfillment of these needs influences her growth throughout the narrative. Utilizing qualitative methods, the study analyzes key scenes and dialogues to illustrate Dory's physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs. The findings reveal that while Dory's physiological needs are minimally depicted, her safety needs are evident as she navigates vulnerable situations. Her profound desire for belongingness and love drives her quest to reunite with her family, highlighting the importance of relationships in her character development. Additionally, the study illustrates how Dory's journey enhances her self-esteem and leads to self-actualization as she learns to embrace her identity and capabilities. This research underscores the significance of character education in understanding personal growth and emotional intelligence. The insights gained from Dory's character can serve as a valuable resource for educators and parents, emphasizing the role of films in facilitating discussions about character development and the fulfillment of human needs. The study concludes with suggestions for incorporating character education into curricula and further research opportunities in the field of film analysis and character studies.

Abstract

This study addresses the ongoing moral crisis by examining the implementation of a Love-Based Curriculum in Islamic education as a form of value-based learning. Madrasahs are encouraged to innovate instructional practices to foster students’ spiritual and social development through five core values: love for God and the Prophet, love for knowledge, love for oneself and others, love for the environment, and love for the homeland. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study applies the Living Value Assessment (LVA) as both a reflective and pedagogical instrument within Islamic Cultural History (SKI) learning at Madrasah Aliyah Al Falah. LVA complements Value-Based Education (VBE) by assessing the internalization of values, while VBE provides the educational framework that supports value growth. Data were collected from reflective journals of four students in Grades X and XI. The findings show that LVA effectively identifies the five dimensions of love embedded in the Love-Based Curriculum and can be used by teachers to evaluate value integration in SKI learning.
