Abstract

ABSTRACTSonchus oleraceus is a weed that is capable of living in chromium contaminated environments, so their physiological, biochemical and molecular responses can be used as biomarkers of chromium stress. Changes in the activity of antioxidative enzymes can be used as a biomarker of biochemical against heavy metal stress. The objective of this research was to know the response of antioxidative enzymes activity in S. oleraceus subjected to Cr stress on different planting media. The research was done in 2 factors i.e. planting media types and Cr compound types (Cr3+and Cr6+). Parameters measured were antioxidative enzymes activity i.e catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxidase dismutase (SOD), and glutathion reductase (GR), dissolved protein content in leaves, and content of Cr6 + and Cr total in roots and shoots. The data were analyzed with a two way ANOVA using SAS 9.1 32-bit for windows. The results indicated that activity of antioxidative enzymes (CAT, APX, SOD and GR) of S. oleraceus leaves tend to increase under Cr stress condition. The Cr6+ treatment of 10 mg/L significantly increased the antioxidative enzyme activity of CAT, APX, SOD and GR in S. oleraceus leaves. The antioxidative enzyme activity (APX, SOD and GR) S. oleraceus grown on soil medium containing sludge was higher than that grown on soil media and on the mixture of sludge: soil (1: 1). Under Cr stress conditions, the roots and shoots of S. oleraceus grown on sterile sand media, soil and the mixture of sludge:soil (1:1) accumulate Cr6+ and Cr total. The accumulation of Cr6+ was found the highest in shoots, meanwhile accumulation of Cr total was found the highest in the roots. The Cr treatments and planting media also significantly influenced the soluble protein content in S. oleraceus leaves.Key words: antioxidant, oxidative stress, chromium, weed, soluble protein

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted from April - July 2018 at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry and Natural Materials Synthesis Research, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Marine Microbiology Laboratory in the Department of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Riau. The purpose of this research is to know the ability of secondary metabolites to inhibit heterotrophic bacteria in inhibiting the activity of pathogenic bacteria (Vibrioalginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The research method used is the experimental method. 10 isolates of heterotrophic bacteria were obtained from a collection of Marine Microbiology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine laboratories which were able to produce secondary metabolites. Each bacterial isolate was tested on pathogenic bacteria, namely Aeromonashydrophila (P), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Q), Vibrio alginolyticus (R) using paper discs and each isolate was carried out 3 repetitions, so that 90 experiments were obtained. Test results of secondary metabolites of 10 heterotrophic bacterial isolates have the ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The best isolate is J isolates with clear zones formed wider than the other test bacteria which is 12,35 mm and the activity of the bacteria was 1877,78 mm2 / ml. This inhibitory power is caused by the presence of compounds that are anti-microbial namely secondary metabolites. Isolates A, D, F, G, H are resistant to pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas hydrophilla, isolates D, E, G, J are resistant to pathogenic bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This is indicated by the presence of a cloudy zone around the disc paper that is formed during the inhibitory test Keyword : Secondary Metabolites, Heterotrophic Bacteria, Inhibitory Power

Abstract

Kata kunci: mortalitas, morbiditas, dose-response, value of statistical life, cost of illness AbstractThis study aims to estimate the economic impact of air pollution on health in Indonesia. Air pollution indicator used is particulate matter matter 10 (PM10) which is considered as a good predictor of health with wider coverage compared to substances other air pollutants. The economic impact is measured by costs incurred due to the occurrence of human health problems, which consists of mortality and morbidity. Estimation technique involves two approaches, namely epidemiology to assess the causal relationship between the level of concentration of PM10 with health risks, and economic valuation to provide monetary value on these health risks. In this study, the epidemiological approach uses dose-response function, while the economic valuation using the value of statistical life (VSL) for mortality and cost of illness (COI) for morbidity. The result indicates the economic costs caused by the concentration of PM10 to the health are Rp 373.1 billion, equivalent to 5.03% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Of these costs, 60.9% is the cost of mortality in the form of premature death and 9.1% is morbidity which the largest component costs (approximately 50%) of hospital admission for respiratory causes. Society must bear the cost of pollution on average about Rp 1.53 million or 6.7% of per capita incomeKeywords: mortality, morbidity, dose-response, value of statistical life, cost of illness

Abstract

Violence against women is still a thorny issue in Indonesia. Data of Lembar Fakta Catatan Tahunan (CATAHU) from National Commission for Women in 2015 reached to 16.217 cases. Discrimination of local regulations, religious intolerance, death penalty policy, evictions, and political conflicts are considered associated with it. Resistance to this issue has been conducted through social movements (women), but the results have not been succesful. The development of the women’s movement has shifted from the old social movements (physical) towards new social movements (digital). Advancement in technology of new media communication hasprovide a space for people to interact in a novel patterns. Internet is considered as a medium capable of facilitating the movement of women to communicate their aspirations, mobilizing the masses to make collective actions. This paper aims to describe the transformation of communication through new media in the women’s movement for gender justice with case studies in Surakarta and Yogyakarta. This study is conducted in several groups of the women’s movement which are based in community and NGO.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the hidden motives of the White behind race and class struggles in Carl Lee‘s case of murdering two local young white men who had raped his 10 years old daughter, Tonya, and left her bruised and bloodied. Lee, a black man, who used to have good relations with the White stood against the White at the court when he decided to kill the rapists in his own hands as his revenge to his daughter. The story was not simply telling readers about the races and classes struggles between the Black and the White but another important point to notice was the wilingness of some white people who posted themselves in Lee‘s side that led further conflict of the White against the White.
