Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the translation quality in Bound novel. This study followed the theory of Nababan et.al (2012) about the three aspects of translation quality namely (1) accuracy; (2) acceptability; and (3) readability. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the research design. The data of this study were gathered by using the documents and questionnaire by the raters. The results analysis from the raters showed that translation quality in Bound novel were less accurate with the average points around 2.75, acceptable with the average points around 2.92 and readable with the average points around 3.0. Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using the Directed Reading Thinking Aactivity (DRTA) strategy was higher than taught by using the Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) strategy. 2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than that  The students with low curiosity, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on The students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade XI of MAN Kampung (MAN KP) Teungoh Langsa in 2016/2017 school year. The total number of population of this research was 160 students. There were 6 classes. Two classes were chosen consist of 30 students of each class so 60 students were selected as sample of this research by applying multistage cluster random sampling. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. The XI IPA2 class was taught by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity and XI IAI was taught by using Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) Strategy. Curiosity questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low curiosity. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significant. The results of the data analysis proved that: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy is higher than students achievement in reading comprehension taught by Questions-Answer Relationship(QARs) Teaching strategy. 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Keywords: Curiosity; Comprehension; Achievement; Teaching Strategies

Abstract

This study is based on the fact that the readers get words emotion after reading the tweets of covid-19 news. Various emotions found on the tweets of twitter relate to the Covid-19 news. Some of them make the readers being fear or sad of this pandemic. This study deals with semantic emotion of covid-19 news in twitter account of CNN Breaking News. The objectives of the study is to investigate how the semantic emotions realized in Covid-19 news. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were words from tweets which contain semantic emotion of Covid-19 news in twitter. The sources of data in this study were Covid-19 news in twitter, after vaccine Covid-19 distributed since beginning of January 2021. It was found that emotions were realized in covid-19 news, namely: basic emotion, emotional relations, caused emotions, causative, emotional goals, and complex emotions. Contrary with the expectation, happiness was the dominant emotion found in covid-19 news on twitter. Happiness is an emotion to show pleasant, while covid-19 in unpleasant situation. But in this research, it was found that happiness had a high frequency.Keywords: Semantic Emotion, Covid-19, Twitter, Vaccine

Abstract

ABSTRACTLanguage forms a dialogue that becomes a very important matter in communicating. Dialogue is related with speech function. Halliday (1994) suggests that dialogue is a process of exchange involving two variables; those are: (1) a commodity to be exchanged; either information or good and service and (2) roles associated with exchange relations; either giving or demanding. Halliday (1994) states that there are four basic types of speech functions; those are: offer, statement, command, and question. This study tries to analyze the speech function of used by Anies Baswedan in his speech when he was ceremonially approved the governor of Jakarta in the Period of 2017-2022. Based on the data analysis, it was got that there are 75 independent clauses of which speech functions are statement, and there are 7 independent clauses of which speech functions are command. The speech functions of statement are in marked and unmarked mood, while the command ones are in unmarked mood. The types of speech function found in the speech are correlated with the function found in the speech are correlated with the function and the goal of the speech. Keywords: Speech Function, Speech, Governor, Inaugural Ceremony.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn communication, people often faced to the use of metaphor, but many of us sometimes don't understand the metaphor itself. People usually find metaphors when using language in communication where the language they want to say is different from the actual meaning. metaphor divided into two; lexical metaphor and grammatical metaphor and lexical metaphor. This research focus on lexical metaphor that shows variations of words in which there are veiled meanings or different meanings. This research aims to explain why lexical metaphors are used in the Surah Al-Kahfi. This research revealed that (+) specialized, un-equal, formal and written have some frequency. All of them were found 42 times or 100%. Meanwhile, the (-) specialized, equal, informal and spoken with zero experience. the researcher was interested to conduct a research about lexical metaphor that used in Surah Al-Kahfi with Bahasa Indonesia translation version of the Qur’an. Keywords: Metaphor, Lexical Metaphor, Al-Qur’an, Surah Al-Kahfi

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by TELLS technique was significantly higher than PSOT. (2) whether the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high interest was higher than with low interest, and (3) If there was interaction between teaching techniques and interest on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This study established the different effect of teaching techniques on students’ interest which was required by the hypothesis and applying experimental research design by using Factorial Design 2x2. Descriptive statistic was used to describe the data such as mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance. While inferential statistic used to test the research hypotheses by applying two ways ANOVA with the level of significance 0.05. The results reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading expository text taught by using TELLS was higer than PSOT technique, with Fob = 17.902 > Ftab = 3.11, (2) students’ achievement in reading expository text on hight interest was higher than that low interest, with Fobs = 38.988 > Ftab = 3.11, (3) there was interaction between teaching technique and interest on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs = 5.962 > Ftab = 3.11.Keywords:Teaching Techniques, Interest, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study is to investigate the culture and interlanguage stages effect on EFL students’ politeness in refusals. This study was a qualitative research. The data were taken from refusal expressions made by EFL Malay and Batak Junior high school students with initial stage (stage 1 interlanguage) and free variation stage (stage 2 interlanguage). The data of this study were collected by using elicitation techniques by using Discourse Completion Task (DCT), pictures and Interview. The number of the subjects involved in this study was taken by using snowball technique and the total number were twelve subjects. The results of this study showed that both culture and interlanguage stages affect the EFL students’ politeness in refusals. In Bataknese EFL students, the realization of politeness in refusal tends to be more affected by the culture rather than the interlanguage stages. While in Malay, culture and interlanguage stages have the same effect in the realization of politeness in refusals.Keywords: Culture, Effect, Interlanguage Stages,  Politeness, Refusals

Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Mandailingnese in Tanjungbalai. It usesqualitative research design. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai, find out the ways in maintaining the Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai and find out the reasons why the speakers of Mandailingnese people maintain their language in Tanjungbalai. The subjects were 10teenagers (boys and girls) of Mandailingnese. The use of instruments in this study were observation and interview. The observation were used to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai in order to describe the ways of Mandailingnese language maintenance. The interview was used to gain the reasons of Mandailingnese language maintainancein Tanjungbalai. The theories of Fasold, Fishman and Holmes are used in this study. The data were analyzed by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). There are four types of language maintenancein Tanjungbalai namely; low maintenance, medium maintenance, strong maintenance and extreme maintenance. There are two ways to maintain Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai namely; join the  community and teach the language to younger sister/brother. There are four reasons why they maintain their language namely; to express their identity as Mandailingnese people, to achieve self pride as Mandailingnese people, to tell certain issue and to creat closer relationship. Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe whether : 1). Students’ vocabulary mastery taught by inferencing strategies (IS) higher than taught by Lexical Processing Strategies (LPSs) in students’ vocabulary achievement.2) Students’ who have high vocabulary mastery is significantly higher than students’ who have low vocabulary mastery in students’ vocabulary achievement. 3) The effect of simultaneously applying both Lexical Strategies and Vocabulary mastery on the students’ vocabulary achievement. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this study. There was 80 students from grade X of 2017/2018 academic years of MAN 1 Takengon as sample of this study. The students divided in two groups. Each group consists of 40 students. The first group was treated by using Lexical Inferencing Strategies and the second group was treated by Lexical Processing Strategies. Vocabulary of the two groups was measured by giving questionnaire to classify the students having high and low vocabulary mastery, and achievement test measure by giving multiple choice test to know students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery. The data are analyzed by applying two-way ANOVA at the level significance ɑ = 0.05. The findings of the data shows that. 1) The students’ vocabulary mastery taught by using Lexical Inferencing Strategies was higher than that taught by using Lexical Processing Strategies, with Fobs (19.72) > Ftab (3.25). 2) The Vocabulary Achievement of the students who have high vocabulary mastery was higher than students who have low vocabulary mastery, with Fobs (2691.93) > Ftab (3.25). 3) There was significance interaction between teaching Lexical Strategies and Vocabulary Mastery on the students’ vocabulary achievement, with Fobs (3.27) > Ftable (3.25).

Abstract

ABSTRACTA text can be only interpreted through a background information of other text, and this is where intertextuality emerged, to shape another text. This study investigates the realization of intertextuality in articles of opposite editorials related to Presidential Election 2019. The objectives of the study is to evaluate the ways of the intertextuality realized. This research applied qualitative research design. The data were complex clauses which contained of intertextuality from opposite editorials of four newspapers, namely Kompas, Media Indonesia, Analisa, and Waspada started from January 2nd until April 17th 2019. The data were analyzed by using content analysis technique proposed by Elo and Kyngas (2007). The findings showed that; there were five elements those caused intertextuality realized in opposite editorials, they were; paraphrasing, patchwriting, making implicit meaning, putting contrastive conjunction, and last, image building. Keywords: Intertextuality, Realizations, Editorials, Presidential Election, Content Analysis
