Abstract

This study aimed (1) to describe the perception, attitude and motivation of Economics students in learning English. (2) to describe level of  perception, the level of attitude and level of motivation of Economics students in learning English.(3) to reason  why the Economics students realize such perception, attitude and motivation in learning English as the ways they are. This qualitative study was conducted at the first year of Economics students. The sources of data of this study were 58 students from two classes. The data were collected by share questionnaire and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that (1) the students perceive the important of English for his/her study and future work and students offer the general abstract statement of the important of English. They have positive attitude and negative attitudes and integrative instrumental, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; (2) level of perception of Economics students were 485 highly positive, 33% positive and 19 % negative, then the level of attitude in the level of receiving (78%), valuing (64%), internalizing values (63%), responding (50%) and organizing (43%). The level of motivation was high. (3)some reason of students realized their perception were work, study, promote economy syariah language policy and lack of skill. For reason of students realized their attitudes were economical factor, ethnicity, language policy, occupation and listen the music, three reasons of students realized their motivation were the physical condition of class, lecturer and method of teaching.Keywords: English, Learning, Perception, Attitude, Motivation.

Abstract

This study deals with the cognitive process by students’ majoring in natural and social science in Writing Analytical Exposition Text. This study attempted to investigate the reasons why the cognitive process happens in writing analytical exposition text the way it does. The data in this study were the students of SMA Nurul Iman from two different majors; they were three students of Natural Science Major and three students of Social Science Major. This study was conducted by using qualitative design of which instrument are both writing test and interview. The research findings show that the cognitive processes of the students of the two majors were different in planning, translating and reviewing. The students majoring in natural and social science write analytical exposition in similarity and different cognitive process. The similarity is that both students majoring write analytical text in terms three stages; planning, translating, and reviewing, and the different are that the two major student perform cognitive process in different stage. The students majoring in Natural Science use the information in the assignment to generate new information then relate it with their experience and they know about the topic to be developed. Whereas, students majoring in Social Science do not really know about the topic and do not relate it with their experience so that way they could not generate content information and develop the text. Keywords: Cognitive Process, Analytical, Different Major, Social Science, Natural Sciences

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this research is to explain wheter are students’ writing achievement taught by using collaborative writing technique is higher than that taught by using brainstorming writing technique. Because students more than active to make writing cooperatively. While the brainstorming writing technique ordered the students to make writing individually. The research design was experimental with research by using factorial design 2 x 2. There were 34 students from 2020/2021 academic year of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Awashliyah 30 Binjai as the sample of this research.the students were divided into two groups. The first group was treated by using collaborative writing technique and the second group was treated by using brainstoring writing technique in writing achievement. The data were analyzed by applying ANNOVA. The result of the research that student’s writing achievement high curiosity with the mean score 83.35 higher than those with low curiosity eith the mean score is 82,29 and the Fobserved = 65.680 > Ftable 0.002.  It means that students with high curiosity affect students writing achievement higher than students with low curiosity.Keywords: Writing TeachingTechniques, Students’ Curiosity, Writing Achievement

Abstract

The aims of this study are to investigate linguistic features, to describe the discursive techniques and to describe social implications that are used in oriflame catalogue beauty product advertisements. This research was conducted by using qualitative research design. The data of this study were texts on oriflame beauty product advertisements. The data analyzed by using three dimensional nature of critical analysis as preceded by Fairclough. There are three dimensional frameworks of analysis that are description/ text analysis, interpretation/process and explanation/social. The findings are (1) there were 7 out of 8 kind of linguistic features were found in oriflame catalogue beauty product advertisements. the most dominant linguistic feature used in the advertisement is adjective, (2) there were 9 discursive techniques that found in the second level analysis, the most technique used in the advertisements is emotive word.Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Advertisement, Linguistic Feature, Discursive Technique,  Social Implication

Abstract

Writing skills is considered the most difficult skill. The students usually face many difficulties in exploring the ideas or even finding the appropriate words to what they want to write. In this research, the researcher focuses on giving teachers written feedback in teaching writing narrative texts to the eight graders of SMP Amiruddiniyah Rantau Prapat. Written feedback is taken to provide an interaction between students writing and the teacher. In this process a teacher read the students work and responds to it through some written comments. The subjects of the study were the students of Eight grades. There were forty students, twenty male and twenty female students. This study is descriptive qualitative. The instruments that are used by the researcher are observation checklist, field notes, and students written works. the researcher collected the data from three observations. The first observation, the writing task was given to check the understanding of the students in writing narrative text,but the teacher did not give feedback. In the second and third observations feedback were given. In the second observation, the writing task was done in groups. Meanwhile in the third observation, it was done individually. Abstract

Language is a reflection of speakers. A person can guess the identity such as the origin, character, or behavior of the interlocutor of the language he uses. Gender affect the use of language, both oral and written language. As an essential skill in learning English, writing involves the application of grammar and sentence pattern, vocabulary, or diction and cross cultural understanding. It can be said that writing ability is someone capability to express their idea in the form of written representation. The objective of this study is to investigate the linguistic form of narrative text written by male and female students. The data of this study will be gathered by sentences in narrative text written by male and female students of Senior High School about their experience. The use of language features proposed empty adjectives, hedge, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar super polite form, tag question and emphatic stress, even though the characteristics of color words and question intonation have not been found in the characters’ utterances. Abstract

The purpose of this research was to help teachers to enrich their knowledge about Letterland strategies in teaching English vocabulary to young learners. The objective of this research was to investigate the types of problem faced by teachers while using Letterland strategies. This research applied descriptive qualitative design and the data gathered from the sentences of four teachers in Nursery class at a Singapore Pre-School, Medan. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. Then, the techniques in analyzing the data were condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were two types of problem faced by all the teachers; an internal disturbance (54.55%),  and an external disturbance (45.45%). It was concluded that Letterland strategies were good for young learners in learning English vocabulary because it provided some fun activities that contained of multi-sensory based learning which they were able to see, hear, do, and touch it.         Keywords: English Vocabulary; Letterland Strategies; Young Learners

Abstract

Pantun is a old poetry of Malay which is used as a means of delivering ideas, attitude, and cultural values (Sri, 2010:6). Along the ceremony of Malaynese Wedding, there are a lot of clauses that are used to express the speaker’s ideas that implies hopes and suggestions to the people. Next, the words of Pantun are also used to express the speaker’s attitude towards the marriage like to entertaint the bride and groom. In addition to delivering ideas and attitudes. Pantun is also used to present the cultural values of Malay that keep the kinship among family members. Words arranged in Pantun in terms of poetic values contain philosophical of life, politeness ethics, laws and society. Malaynese is a closed society to say something cannot be directly but must be coated with words that make its meaning disguised but easy to understand. The purpose of this study is to explain the use of metaphor types in Pantun for Wedding Ceremony in Malay Langkat tradition. The use of metaphor of this study divided into four, like: information function, expressive function, directive funtion, fatigue funtion. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected from clauses in pantun that reflected metaphor. The realization of metaphors in pantun were especially existed in Hempang pintu, Hempang kipas, and Hempang batang. The result of this study showed that there were expressive function was 16 (53%), information function was 9 (30%), directive funtion was 4 (13%), and fatigue funtion was 1 (4%). Keywords: Metaphor, Pantun, Culture,  Malay Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study deals with Address System in one ethnic namely Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. The objective of this study is to describe the functions of address system Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting data were through giving the questionnaire sheets to the twelve subjects and record the conversation of interview with subjects and also the informants by taking the video directly. The result of this study found that Gayonese Lut has five functions address system namely Attract people attention (5.71), Show intimacy (28.58), Show politeness (7.14), Show power differential (20.00), and Reflect identity (38.57).  Gayonese Deret also has five functions of address system namely Attract people attention (10.00), Show intimacy (20.00), Show politeness (32.00), Show power differential (14.00), and Reflect identity (24.00). In Gayonese Lut, Reflect identity is the most function of address system while in Gayonese Deret is Show politeness. Keywords: Address System, Gayonese, Lut, Deret.

Abstract

The research deals with the occurrence of shift in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were clauses which translated from Gayonese into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model.  This research was found that there were five types of translation shift. The type of structure shift was the dominant type. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) reduplication word shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class and change in ranks. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: translation, translation shifts, Didong texts.
