Abstract

This study aims to (1) analyze the level of income and (2) analyze the factors that influence the level of household welfare of cassava farmers. The study was conducted in Gunung Agung Village, Terusan Nunyai District, Central Lampung Regency with a survey method. The sample of farmers 78 respondents was taken by proportional stratified simple random sampling. Data analysis using quantitative descriptive methods include income analysis, welfare level analysis according to BPS and Sayogyo, and using a binary logit model. The results show that the source of household income of cassava farmers is increasingly diverse and leads to off and non-farm activities. Revenue from cassava farming has decreased but is still dominant. Based on BPS and Sayogyo criteria, most cassava farming households are in a decent and prosperous life group. The factors that influence the level of welfare of cassava farmers are the amount of work, cassava farming experience, and household income.

Abstract

Abstract. Murniati K, Mutolib A. 2020. The impact of climate change on the household food security of upland rice farmers in Sidomulyo, Lampung Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3487-3493.  Climate change in the agricultural sector, particularly food crops, significantly decreases the production, causing the anomaly influences of El-Niño (drought) and La-Nina (flood). Climate change will have an impact on food availability and accessibility, thereby disrupting the food security and vulnerability of farmer households. This study aimed to: analyze the livelihood vulnerabilities, determine the food security level, and assess the livelihood vulnerability on the food security of upland rice farmer households against climate change. This study was conducted in Sidomulyo Sub-district, South Lampung District. The samples were randomly selected among farmers, resulting in 66 selected farmers. The analysis included: the livelihood vulnerability index– intergovernmental panel of climate change (LVI-IPCC), food security index based on the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and the Ordinal Model Logit (Ologit). The results showed that the upland rice farmer’s household had a livelihood vulnerability of 0.071, belonged to the medium category.  Most farmer households (77.27%) were categorized as food secure.   The “secure” category in the food security index is obtained if the upland rice farmers fulfill three criteria includes food availability, food stability, and food sustainability.  The strategy of climate change adaptation, rice price, and phonska fertilizer price affects the food security of farmers’ households.  Climate change adaptation strategies are indispensable for sustainable food security.

Abstract

Abstract. Rangga KK, Yonariza, Yanfika H, Mutolib A. 2020. Perception, attitude, and motive of local community towards forest conversion to plantation in Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4903-4910. Forest conversion in Dharmasraya District massively occurred from 2000 to 2014. In 2000, forest area reached 86% of 33,550 ha. In 2014, forest cover reduced to only 16% with an increase in plantation area (rubber and oil palm), covering 59% of the total area. This study was aimed to examine the perception, attitude, and motive of the local community regarding forest conversion to the plantation. This study was located in PFMU (Production Forest Management Unit) Dharmasraya West Sumatra, which included a production forest area. This study was conducted from February to August 2018 with a case study approach. A total of 40 households, was selected as respondents. Snowball sampling was applied to interview the key informants. Data were analyzed using the interactive model, which included data reduction, data presentation, also conclusion drawing and verification. The study result indicated that forest is owned by the local community based upon the customary law, and the state does not have the right to manage and claim forest ownership. In terms of the economic aspect, the community benefited greatly from wood availability in the forest as the source of income. According to the local community, the conversion of forests into plantation did not have a significant effect on the environment. In fact, the local community agreed that land-use change from forest to plantation will provide greater benefit than preserving the forest. The expansion of plantation was found to be the motive for land clearance by cutting trees to obtain ownership over the forest.

Abstract

Abstract. Mutolib A, Widi RH, Nuraini C, Rahmat A. 2026. Agrobiodiversity and local wisdom of indigenous communities in food security in Eastern Priangan, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 27 (3): d270318. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270318. Food security remains a persistent global challenge, shaped by population growth, climate change, and increasing pressure on natural resources. In Indonesia, despite exceptional biological and cultural diversity, food systems are increasingly threatened by land conversion, environmental degradation, and dietary homogenization. This study investigates how agrobiodiversity, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), and social capital contribute to strengthening household food security in Kampung Naga, an indigenous Sundanese community in Eastern Priangan, West Java, Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating biodiversity inventories, thematic analysis of interviews and participant observations, and a social capital survey involving 50 household respondents. Agrobiodiversity was assessed through species identification across major food categories, while social capital was measured using five dimensions—trust, social networks, social norms, participation, and reciprocity—on a four-point Likert scale. Results show that the community maintains a high diversity of food plant species, including tubers and staple foods, fruits, spices and seasonings, leafy and green vegetables, and vegetables and legumes, which enhance dietary diversity, nutritional adequacy, and livelihood resilience. Traditional ecological knowledge informs sustainable agricultural practices such as intercropping, crop rotation, and food preservation, while ritualized expressions of gratitude embed agriculture within cultural and spiritual values. Household and communal food barns further strengthen food stability and collective risk management. Social capital analysis revealed relatively high mean scores for trust (3.40) and social networks (3.45) on a 1-4 scale, indicating strong interpersonal reliability, dense social ties, and effective cooperation in food-related activities. Together, agrobiodiversity and social capital synergistically reinforce the four dimensions of food security-availability, access, utilization, and stability-forming an integrated, resilient, and socially embedded food system. These findings highlight the enduring relevance of indigenous knowledge and institutions in sustaining food security and suggest that strengthening social capital can serve as a strategic policy entry point for designing inclusive, community-based food security interventions in Indonesia and comparable socioecological contexts.

Abstract

Ciamis Regency is one of the bird’s eye chili pepper producing areas in West Java. Although this chili pepper productivity in Ciamis Regency is still relatively low, indicating that optimal farming efficiency has not yet been achieved. One of the main problems is the inefficient use of inputs, especially water. Therefore, the application of drip irrigation is considered to have the potential to improve the technical, allocative, and economic efficiency of chili pepper farming. This study aims to analyze production factors that affect chili pepper production, analyze technical inefficiency, and measure the level of technical, allocative, and economic efficiency in chili pepper farming with the application of drip irrigation. The research was conducted from June-September 2025 using a descriptive quantitative approach with a census method on 55 chili pepper farmers who use drip irrigation. Data analysis was performed using SFA with the Cobb-Douglas production function. The results of the study indicate that mulch and stakes have a positive and significant effect, while the factors of land area, manure, NPK fertilizer, lime, and drip irrigation have a positive but insignificant effect. Farmer education and experience reduce technical inefficiency, while family size increases it. Factors affecting production costs include production, manure, NPK fertilizer, pesticides, stakes, drip irrigation, and labor, which have a positive effect on cost increases. The average technical efficiency value was 0.83, allocative efficiency was 0.90, and economic efficiency was 0.74, indicating that drip irrigation is not yet fully economically efficient and still has opportunities for improved chili papper production performance.
