Abstract

Work discipline is an essential element of human resource management and a prerequisite for achieving optimal teacher performance. However, preliminary findings in several public elementary schools in the Singorojo District indicate that some teachers still exhibit low levels of discipline in terms of attendance and completion of administrative tasks. This condition suggests the presence of underlying factors affecting teacher discipline, particularly the work environment and work motivation. This study aims to analyze the influence of the work environment and work motivation, both partially and simultaneously, on the work discipline of elementary school teachers. The research employed a quantitative approach with a survey design. The population consisted of 266 elementary school teachers in Singorojo District, and a sample of 160 teachers was selected using proportional sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, as well as prerequisite tests (normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity), and simple and multiple linear regression analyses. The findings indicate that the work environment has a significant influence on teacher work discipline (R² = 0.336). Work motivation also significantly affects work discipline (R² = 0.246). Simultaneously, the work environment and work motivation contribute 40.1% to teacher work discipline (Sig. 0.000). A supportive work environment and high work motivation are proven to enhance the work discipline of elementary school teachers. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing the work environment and bolstering teacher motivation as key strategic efforts for schools. Future research is recommended to explore other potential predictors such as leadership, organizational culture, or workload.

Abstract

Low mathematics achievement in Indonesian secondary schools persists despite ongoing curriculum reforms. This study employed a Design Thinking–guided mixed-method inquiry to analyse instructional needs and co-create a multimedia Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model that fosters critical thinking. Three purposively selected schools in Batam contributed three mathematics teachers and forty-two students. Data were gathered through two rounds of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and Google-Form questionnaires. Qualitative coding during the Empathise and Define stages revealed four central issues: limited transfer of concepts to problem contexts, weak foundational mastery, mismatch between learning media and student preferences, and scarce collaborative support. Only 7.2 % of students felt competent, whereas 83.3 % acknowledged frequent computational errors and 80 % were unable to apply formulas. Students preferred group discussion (67.7 %), peer tutoring (51.6 %), and audio-visual media (45.2 %). In the Ideate stage, a PBL sequence aligned with the TPACK framework was prototyped and pilot-taught in each school. Observation indicated that 67.7 % of learners participated actively in group problem-solving, while post-lesson feedback showed 74.4 % experienced clearer conceptual understanding when multimedia and peer support were combined. Teachers reported improved lesson flow and greater responsiveness to heterogeneous ability levels. The study concludes that Design Thinking, coupled with media-rich PBL, can realign pedagogy with stakeholder needs, strengthen critical-thinking dispositions, and serve as a replicable model for mathematics instruction in similar contexts. Future work should examine long-term learning gains, scalability across diverse regions, and professional development structures required to sustain technology-enhanced PBL adoption. Such evidence will clarify policy guidelines and funding priorities for equitable implementation nationwide.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of implementing a design thinking approach in differential learning to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. A quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design was employed. The participants consisted of 60 undergraduate students enrolled in a Differential Calculus course, who were assigned to an experimental group (n = 30) receiving design thinking-based instruction and a control group (n = 30) receiving conventional instruction. The research instrument was an essay-based critical thinking test developed according to five indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in critical thinking skills between the experimental group (M = 83.67) and the control group (M = 68.43), with p < 0.001. The experimental group achieved an N-Gain score of 0.64, categorized as moderate to high and substantially higher than the control group’s N-Gain of 0.32. Furthermore, Cohen’s effect size was 2.41, indicating a very large effect. Improvements were observed across all critical thinking indicators, with the analysis indicator demonstrating the greatest gain (a mean difference of 16.67 points). In conclusion, design thinking-based learning is effective in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in differential calculus and represents a promising alternative instructional approach for university-level mathematics education.
