Abstract

The problem of livestock farmers in Tanjung Pasar Village, Muara Pawan District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan is the high number of calf deaths and the use of palm oil waste in the form of palm oil mud which is abundant in the area which is directly given to livestock, even though the nutritional content in it is quite low when used as a source of feed to meet the needs of life in cattle. So the urgency of this problem is the need to increase the knowledge of livestock farmers regarding how to intensively raise calves in order to reduce high mortality in calves and increase the knowledge of livestock farmers regarding how to process animal feed from palm oil mud. Palm oil mud processing can be done to increase its nutrition. Therefore, the Community Service team from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga University has carried out activities to improve the knowledge and skills of breeders in maintaining calves properly and processing palm oil mud. The specific output targets achieved are in the form of increasing the ability of farmers to raise calves better and make feed from palm oil mud, so that the health of calves can improve and the nutritional needs of the livestock will be met. The method used in achieving these goals is through activities that include counseling and training on how to rearing of calves, making animal feed from palm oil waste through fermentation methods and making mineral blocks. The results that have been achieved are in the form of a level of knowledge and understanding of how to rearing of calves which has increased from the previous 15.38% to 96.15%. Likewise, how to make animal feed from 11.54% to 96.15%, and how to make mineral blocks from 11.54% to 96.15%.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of kemangi leaf (Ocimum basilicum) extract in the egg yolk skim milk diluent on the plasma membrane and motility of Boerawa goats' sperm at room temperature. The research used fresh samples of Boerawa goat semen collected by artificial vagina. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design, divided into four treatments with six replications. The treatments were the addition of kemangi leaf extract at the levels of 0% (P0), 1% (P1), 2% (P2), and 3% (P3). Diluted semen was stored at room temperature and observed at hours 0, 1, 2, and 3. Analysis of the data using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), then proceed to the Duncan Test to determine significant differences between treatments. The results showed that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in sperm plasma membrane, but a significant difference (p < 0.05) in sperm motility was observed when kemangi leaf extract was added. However, the addition of kemangi leaf (Ocimum basilicum) extract tends to provide a better value than without it. The addition of kemangi leaf extract at a concentration of 2% yields the highest results in sperm plasma membrane integrity and sperm motility of Boerawa semen at room temperature.

Abstract

Trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi is a major protozoan illness that affects animals worldwide. It is also referred to as “surra” and affects a variety if wild and domestic animals such as sheep, cattle, goats, dogs, buffaloes, pigs, elephants, amongst others. In preparing this review, relevant scientific articles were searched on PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases using the keyword “Trypanosoma evansi AND animals”. T. evansi are carried by a vast number of hematophagous flies and are found in the extracellular and internal fluids of certain hosts. Trypanosomosis is mostly characterized by anemia, and the degree of anemia can typically be used as a gauge for the disease's severity. Trypanosomiasis compromises the host animal's immune system and its diagnosis is dependent on a number of factors such as thorough clinical examination, suitable sample collection, sample size, suitable diagnostic test performance, and logical interpretation of test results. The clinical manifestations of trypanosomiasis vary widely in both appearance and severity, ranging from neurological disturbances and skin plaques to vaginal enlargement. Hematophagous biting flies, including Tabanus, Haematopota, Glossina, Chrysops, Lyperosia, Stomoxys, and Hippobusca flies, contribute to the spread of trypanosomiasis. Four medications are primarily used to treat trypanosomiasis: quinapyramine, karetin, diminazene aceturate (Berenil), and melarsomine (cymelarsan). An efficient vaccination program is an additional technique for managing infectious diseases in addition to treatment. The most important step in curtailing the spread of trypanosomiasis caused by T. evansi is to stop its transmission by flies via physical and chemical methods.

Abstract

West Kalimantan Province is one of the provinces that has a large area of oil palm plantations which can become integrated cattle farms. Oil palm plantations provide a source of feed that comes from palm oil processing waste and green grass around the oil palm trees. However, this waste contained not sufficient nutrients if given directly, so needed feed processing to increase the nutrition. The community service team from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Airlangga carried out activities to increase the knowledge and skills of farmers in processing palm oil waste feed and carried out reproductive examination activities on female cattle. The output target to be achieved is increasing the ability of farmers to make feed from palm oil waste that can sufficient for livestock nutritional needs and increased of reproductive health of cows. This activity held on 20 – 23 July 2023 in Tonang Village, District. Sengah Temila, Kab. Landak, West Kalimantan. The activity was attended by 40 participants consisting of breeders, medical officers and veterinarians from the Dinas Ketahanan Pangan, Pertanian dan Perikanan Kabupaten Landak dan Dinas Perkebunan dan Peternakan Provinsi Kalimantan Barat. The first day's activities were carried out by delivering outreach and training materials on processing palm oil waste feed through silage and fermentation methods, making UMB and UMMB, and carrying out reproductive examinations and treatment of female cattle. The outcomes that have been achieved include increasing farmers' understanding and skills regarding how to make silage and palm frond fermentation, as well as UMB and UMMB as additional feed. Health and reproductive disorders examination of female cattle were carried out on 2 female cattle belonging to the Koperasi Produsen Landak Mandiri and 17 female cattle belonging to the Alam Raya Hijau Group. Based on the examination, data was obtained that 7 cows were pregnant, 1 cow had endometritis, and 11 cows were declared to be in normal reproductive condition. The conclusion that can be drawn from this activity is that the participants' knowledge about the given topic increases and the reproductive health of female cattle can be handled with appropriate examination and treatment.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing mineral mix and concentrate booster on the fertility of cows recovering from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Eighteen post-FMD cows were assigned to three treatment groups. Cows in the T0 group received a standard feed consisting of elephant grass and a local concentrate. In the T1 group, cows were provided the standard feed supplemented with 40 g/day of mineral mix, while cows in the T2 group received the standard feed supplemented with 600 g/day of concentrate booster. The feeding treatments were applied for 42 days, and fresh drinking water was provided ad libitum. The results showed that the onset of estrus occurred significantly earlier (p <0.05) compared to the anestrus period experienced during FMD infection. Both supplemented groups exhibited higher (p <0.05) estrus rates, pregnancy rates, and calving rates than the T0 group. The interval between the last estrus and the initiation of additional feeding was considerably longer than the onset of estrus observed after treatment. The pH and ferning scores of cervical mucus in cows from the T0 group were lower than those in the T1 and T2 groups. However, no significant differences (p >0.05) were found in cervical mucus pH or ferning scores between the T1 and T2 groups, between pregnant and non-pregnant cows, or between offspring sex categories. In conclusion, supplementation with either a mineral mix or a concentrate booster improved fertility parameter, including estrus rate, pregnancy rate, and calving rate, in cows recovering from FMD.
