Abstract

The Borg & Gall Research and Development (R&D) model is a methodological framework widely applied in science learning development because it focuses on solving learning problems through empirical data-based evaluation and revision. This study aims to describe and analyze trends in the application of the Borg & Gall model in science learning development, including variations and modifications in stages, evaluation strategies, development outcomes, and challenges reported in previous research. The method used was a literature review using the SPIDER (Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, Research type) approach. A systematic literature search was conducted through Google Scholar, ERIC, and ScienceDirect databases. The results indicate that most studies do not fully implement the Borg & Gall stages, but instead simplify or integrate them with other instructional design models to accommodate the learning context, time constraints, and resource constraints. The dominant evaluation strategies include expert validation, phased field trials, and measuring effectiveness through pre-test and post-test designs. In general, the developed science learning products were declared valid, practical, and effective, although they still face challenges in terms of time, cost, technical competence, and generalizability of the results

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the validity and reliability of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL)-based science module integrated with the Ethno-STEM approach and assisted by Augmented Reality (AR) on the Motion and Force material for seventh-grade junior high school students. The module was developed as an innovative effort to improve the quality of science learning by linking local cultural contexts and the use of technology. The research method used includes validity and reliability testing involving seven expert validators, consisting of four lecturers and three science teachers, who assessed the feasibility of learning documents with five assessment scales, including the Learning Objective Flow (ATP), Learning Implementation Plan (RPP), Teaching Module, and Student Worksheet (LKPD). Validity was analyzed using Aiken's V formula, and the results of the analysis showed that all components obtained V values between 0.75 and 1.00, which was categorized as valid. Meanwhile, the inter-rater reliability test using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) showed an ICC value between 0.753 and 0.947. This indicates that the developed module has excellent inter-rater consistency and good to very good reliability. Therefore, this PBL-based science module, integrated with Ethno-STEM and AR, has been proven valid and reliable for use in the learning process at the junior high school level, making it a reliable learning resource.

Abstract

This preliminary study aimed to examine the need for validated instructional support in transforming Sasambo indigenous knowledge into contextual science practicum activities for preservice and in-service science teachers. A descriptive survey design was employed involving 100 respondents, consisting of 76 preservice science teachers from Biology, Physics, and Chemistry Education programs and 24 in-service science teachers. These groups were selected to obtain complementary perspectives: preservice teachers represent future science educators who require contextual pedagogical preparation, whereas in-service teachers provide practical insights from classroom practice. Data were collected using an online questionnaire comprising nine closed-ended items related to the availability of science learning resources, the integration of Sasambo local wisdom into science learning, and the need for validated instructional support. The questionnaire was reviewed by experts to ensure content validity and tested for internal consistency to confirm instrument reliability. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed substantial gaps in current science learning support. Most respondents perceived science learning resources and portals as limited (82%), reported difficulty finding complete instructional materials (83%), and experienced challenges in accessing reliable and expert-validated resources (87%). The integration of Sasambo local wisdom into science learning was also limited, as 81% of respondents had never connected Sasambo local wisdom with science learning, 82% had difficulty integrating it into science content, and 87% had never implemented Sasambo-based ethno-practicum activities. In contrast, respondents expressed strong support for the development of an integrated learning platform: 98% indicated the need for a portal providing complete and validated instructional materials, 93% agreed that a Sasambo ethno-practicum portal would support innovative learning design, and 96% emphasized the need for reconstructed ethno-Sasambo data. These findings highlight the urgent need to develop validated, contextual, and accessible ethno-practicum learning support to facilitate the transformation of indigenous knowledge into meaningful science practicum activities.
