Abstract

Background: From pregnancy, until the child is two years old, it is a prone period for stunting due to inadequate nutritional care at the family level. Mothers' ability in parenting and child health will affect their nutritional status and health, especially mothers who have stunted children. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of specific nutrition assistance (SNA) through empowering cadres to change the behavior (knowledge, attitudes, practices) of mothers who have stunted children aged 6-24 months.Method: The research used a quasi-experiment with pre-post design with a control group. The research was conducted in Bengkulu Utara (BU) District and Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS) District. The intervention group received SNA for six months (June-November 2019) by Posyandu cadres and health workers. The control group received standard services from the Health Center or the Posyandu. Whilst, the intervention group received nutrition and health counseling during home visits. Mothers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices in parenting and child health nutrition were measured as dependent variables. Sample of 120 mothers with stunted children aged 6-24 months. Data analysis used independent t-test and dependent t-test.Results: The SNA was effective in increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers. The increased knowledge, attitudes, and practices were higher in the intervention group both in BU District (116%) and TTS District (26.33%). In BU District, there was an increase in knowledge (116%), attitude (40%), and practices (20.07%), likewise in TTS District; there was an increase in knowledge (26.33%), attitudes (42.5%), and practices (22.15%) which are significantly different from the increase in the practices of the control group. SNA needs to be carried out continuously to increase mothers' ability in parenting and child health. Therefore, that stunted children can catch up with their height growth.

Abstract

Microplastics are emerging contaminants in aquatic environments and may enter human exposure pathways through seafood consumption. However, baseline exposure data for small pelagic fish in small-island settings remain limited, particularly in Indonesia. Anchovy (Stolephorus spp.), which is commonly consumed whole, may represent a direct dietary exposure pathway. This study aimed to quantify and characterize microplastic contamination in anchovy collected from Dendun Island waters. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 using 100 anchovy samples obtained from local catches. Microplastics were extracted using oxidative digestion followed by density separation, filtration, and stereomicroscopic observation. Data were analyzed descriptively. A total of 109 microplastic particles were identified, with a mean abundance of 1.09 particles per individual. Fibres dominated (67.0%), followed by films (20.2%) and fragments (12.8%). Various colours were observed, indicating heterogeneous particle characteristics. This study provides baseline evidence of microplastic contamination in anchovy from a small-island coastal setting, highlighting its potential as a dietary exposure pathway. These findings support the need for routine monitoring and strengthened plastic pollution control strategies to protect seafood safety and public health.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTitle: Identification of Microplastics in Shrimps (Metapenaeus affinis) in the Waters around Dendun Village, Bintan RegencyBackground : Plastic waste poses a serious threat to the marine environment, with Indonesia being the second-largest contributor globally, and its particles degrading into microplastics (<5 mm) that contaminate aquatic biota. This study aims to analyze the presence of microplastics in Metapenaeus affinis shrimp in the waters of Pulau Dendun, Bintan Regency, as an early indicator of contamination, given that shrimp are filter feeder organisms susceptible to ingesting these particles, compounded by the local community's habit of disposing waste directly into the sea. Method : The research was conducted at the Poltekkes Kemenkes Tanjungpinang Laboratory in 2025 using the NOAA method, involving 30 individual shrimp collected using a purposive sampling technique. Samples were prepared by extracting the digestive tracts, followed by extraction, filtration, and observation under a stereo microscope. Result : Results showed that all shrimp samples were positive for microplastic content, with a total of 182 particles found, or an average of 6 particles per individual, dominated by the shapes of fiber, fragments, film, and pellets. This contamination is strongly suspected to originate from anthropogenic activities (household waste and fishing activity waste). Conclusion : This study confirms the high level of contamination and underscores the urgent need for improved waste management, a reduction in single-use plastics, and public education on Dendun Island to protect fishery resources and public health.

Abstract

Unwanted Pregnancy (UP) is a condition in which a partner or the opposite sex does not want a pregnancy or birth between partners. The incidence of Unwanted Pregnancy in Indonesia is still high (17.5%). Unwanted Pregnancy has an impact on the health of the mother, infant, and family problems. The study aimed to determine the relationship between access to information about family planning and Unwanted Pregnancy in Indonesia. This type of research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design using Program Performance and Accountability Survey 2019 secondary data. The independent variable is access to information about family planning with the dependent variable being Unwanted Pregnancy. Confounding variables are predisposing factors (age, education, occupation, parity, and marital status), enabling factors (area of residence, socioeconomic status, family planning needs), and reinforcing factors (support from health workers). The sample of this study were women of childbearing age 15-49 years who were recorded as pregnant. Multivariate analysis using multivariate logistic regression. Results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between access to family planning information and UP in Indonesia, after controlling for confounding variables (p-value 0.001) (OR=1.964;95%CI:1.334-2.893). Health promotion efforts are needed through communication, information, and health education regarding the importance of access to information about family planning and UP so that it can influence the behavior of women of childbearing age in Indonesia.
