Abstract

A congenital facial anomaly that manifests as a cleft lip, cleft palate, or both—without the involvement of other organ abnormalities—is known as a non-syndromic orofacial cleft (OFC) (Tobing, 2017). According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2019), OFC represents 0.2% of disabilities among Indonesian children aged 24 to 59 months. The causes of OFC are multifactorial. In Indonesia, approximately 7,500 new OFC cases are reported annually, with a rising trend (Purwitasari et al., 2020). This study aimed to investigate the association between micronutrient intake, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, and maternal exposure to secondhand smoke with the incidence of non-syndromic OFC. A case-control study was conducted at Harapan Kita Women and Children Hospital in Jakarta, involving 35 participants in both the case and control groups. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained through direct interviews with respondents, while secondary data were sourced from maternal and child health (MCH) books. Micronutrient intake was measured using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 365 and SPSS version 25.0 for Windows, applying logistic regression. The findings indicated that low folic acid and zinc intake, insufficient maternal weight gain during pregnancy, and maternal exposure to secondhand smoke were significantly associated with the development of non-syndromic orofacial cleft (p < 0.05).

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health concern in Bengkulu Province. According to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (IHS), the prevalence of stunting in Bengkulu reached 20.2%. This study analyzes the relationship between stunting and food security indicators using secondary data from the Bengkulu Central Statistics Agency and the National Food Agency from 2021 to 2023, comprising 30 samples. The analysis showed no statistically significant relationship between stunting and any of the independent variables at the 95% confidence level. The p-values for all variables—including the Food Security Index (FSI), Nutritional Consumption Pattern Ratio (NCPR), poverty rate, food and electricity expenditures, access to clean water, average years of schooling, health worker ratio, life expectancy (AHP), Desirable Dietary Pattern (DDP), Energy Adequacy Ratio (EAR), and Protein Adequacy Ratio (PAR)—were above 0.05. These findings suggest that none of the examined indicators had a significant effect on stunting in Bengkulu Province during the study period.

Abstract

Background: Food Waste (FW) remains a major concern both domestically and globally, with households being the largest contributors. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the total generation of FW in households at risk of stunting and analyze its determinants in urban and rural areas of Bogor Regency. Methods: A quantitative method with a cross-sectional study design was conducted from June to July 2023 in Ciampea and Sukajaya Subsitricts, Bogor Regency. This study involved 168 households as the samples, calculated using the SNI 19-3964-1994 method for sampling and measuring urban waste generation and composition. The inclusion criterion was households with at least one stunting risk factor, according to the National Family Planning Coordination Body or BKKBN. FW determinants included family characteristics and practices (planning, purchasing, storing, cooking, and consuming). The obtained data were then analyzed using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Results: The total FW generated was 5.51 kg/cap/year (urban: 4.08 kg/cap/year; rural: 5.07 kg/cap/year). The most wasted food groups were vegetables and cereals/tubers. Urban households with high income were 4.3 times more likely to generate FW (OR=4.32, CI=1.72 – 10.77). Meanwhile, those with inadequate knowledge were 3.49 times more likely to generate FW (OR=3.49, CI=1.39 – 8.79), and those not planning purchases and processing according to preferences were 4.3 times more likely to generate FW (OR=4.32, CI=1.72 – 10.77). Rural households that did not store food properly were 3.81 times more likely to generate FW (OR=3.81, CI=1.22 – 12.03). Conclusions: The total generation of FW in rural households was higher than in urban households. The determinants of FW in urban areas were income, knowledge, and planning practices, whereas in rural areas, it was storage practices.

Abstract

Abstract

The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia remains high, reaching 21,6% by 2022. The government has established a stunting reduction strategy using 11 specific nutrition intervention indicators and one sensitive nutrition intervention indicator. However, the implementation of these programmes is suboptimal. This study aimed to identify the nutritional factors that influence the reduction in stunting and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition intervention programs on the prevalence of stunting. The study utilized a cross-sectional design with Spearman correlation analysis to examine the relationship between intervention indicators and stunting prevalence, and linear regression analysis to assess their impact. The results showed significant indicators (p < 0,05) included antenatal care performed six times (r= -0,666), iron tablet supplementation for pregnant women (r= -0,362), exclusive breastfeeding (r= -0,501), growth monitoring of toddlers (r= -0,386), treatment of malnourished children (r= -0,503), complete basic immunizations (r= -0,404), adolescent health screenings (r= -0,394), adolescent iron tablet supplementation (r= -0,441), and open defecation-free villages (r= -0,448). In conclusion, increased program coverage correlated with a decrease in stunting prevalence, with antenatal care (ANC) interventions showing the strongest correlation.

Abstract

Background: Southeast Asia is experiencing a dietary shift from traditional plant-based diets to Westernized, processed foods, contributing to rising non-communicable diseases and environmental degradation. Given the significant impact of global food production on greenhouse gas emissions, freshwater consumption, and biodiversity loss, promoting sustainable diets in Southeast Asia is critical. This review aims to explore the current progress, barriers, and opportunities in adopting sustainable diets across the region. Method: A scoping review was conducted using a systematic framework to map the existing literature on sustainable diets in Southeast Asia. A total of 37 studies were identified and analyzed to understand the progress, barriers, and opportunities in adopting sustainable diets. Results: The review shows varying levels of progress across Southeast Asia, with countries like Indonesia and Malaysia advancing through government policies and sustainable agriculture practices. However, economic, cultural, and infrastructural barriers hinder broader adoption. Promising opportunities include leveraging alternative protein sources and the region’s biodiversity. Conclusion: While Southeast Asia has substantial potential for implementing sustainable diets, overcoming economic, cultural, and infrastructural challenges will require coordinated efforts between governments, stakeholders, and communities. Collaborative action is necessary to promote food systems that benefit public health and the environment.

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity has significantly increased, affecting millions of people worldwide. Obesity is a growing public health concern worldwide. According to the statistical data, millions of individuals were classified as obese. Policy plays a crucial role as a macro-level factor in shaping behavioral changes. This study aimed to analyze global trends in health policy research on obesity and its impact on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) from a bibliometric perspective using Scopus-indexed documents. Data analysis methods and visualization techniques were applied to publications from 2014 to 2023 using the keywords (overweight OR obesity OR obes* OR over$weight) AND (health AND (policy OR regulation OR procedure OR system) AND ncd*). RStudio and VOSviewer were utilized for bibliometric publication statistical analysis, resulting in 132 publications from the Scopus metadata. We used bibliometric analysis to examine the published literature and visualize development trends regarding the effects of health policies on obesity. These findings indicate that health policies related to obesity focus on the mechanisms that affect NCDs. The identified policies included taxes on unhealthy foods and food subsidies. Health policies play a crucial role in preventing obesity and reducing its impact on NCDs. Collaboration between the government and various sectors of society is necessary to implement effective policies for the prevention of obesity. Future policies are expected to be adopted by each country regarding unhealthy food tax policies, food subsidy policies, Early Care and Education (ECE) policies, and Health in All Policies (HiAP).

Abstract

Long-term food choices influence dietary patterns, contribute to the nutritional status of adolescents, affect cognitive function, and affect academic achievement. This study provides a novel perspective by examining food choices across urban and rural settings, an area seldom explored in the Indonesian context, and their association with adolescents' nutritional status and academic performance. This study employed a cross-sectional design to capture the relationship among food choice, nutritional status, and academic achievement at a single point in time. in November–December at two schools, Senior High School 1 Dramaga as an urban area and Senior High School 1 Nanggung as a rural area, involving 377 subjects. The collected data included nutritional status using anthropometric measurements, food choice analysis using FCQ, and academic achievement using final exam results. Data analysis included univariate methods, bivariate Spearman's rank correlation, and the Mann–Whitney U test to assess differences between the two study areas. This study showed that there is a correlation between food choice and nutritional status. In urban areas, the results were significant (p=<0,001) for health (r=0,732) mood (r= -0,592), convenience (r= -0,509), sensory appeal (r= -0,223), familiarity (r= 0,570), and weight control (r= 0,708). In rural areas, there were significant differences (p<0,001) in (r= 0,610), mood (r= -0,473), sensory appeal (r= -0,409), natural content (r= 0,577), price (r= 0,571), familiarity (r= 0,582), and weight control (r= 0,690).. Moreover, nutritional status was positively correlated with academic achievement (p < 0,001) in urban (r= 0,741) and rural areas (r=0,525). In conclusion, food choice significantly affects adolescents’ nutritional status and academic achievement in urban and rural areas. Therefore, structured education on the importance of making food choices based on health considerations and nutritional content is essential as a strategic effort to improve long-term nutritional status and academic performance.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among school-aged children negatively affect both physical growth and academic achievement. In Indonesia, approximately 41% of children attend school while hungry, and only 10% habitually consume a nutritionally balanced breakfast. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the “Free Nutritious Meal” (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) program on concentration levels among elementary school students. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments and a control group was applied. The study was conducted in Banda Aceh, with SD Negeri 50 serving as the intervention group and SD Negeri 20 as the control group. A total of 83 students in the intervention group received free nutritious meals, while 83 students comprised the control group. The study was carried out from April to June 2025. Concentration levels were measured using the Grid Concentration Test, a simple psychological tool to assess focus and attention. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to present respondent characteristics and concentration distribution, and Chi-Square tests to compare within-group and between-group changes. Results demonstrated a significant improvement in concentration among students in the intervention group between baseline and endline (p = 0.020), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p = 0.328). The MBG program effectively enhanced student concentration. Strengthening program quality and providing nutrition education to families are recommended to support healthy eating habits and maximize the program’s impact on children’s cognitive function.

Abstract

Feeding globally is considered a critical challenge for sustainable development, hence, protein, energy, and adequate micronutrients must be sustainably available to alleviate many community problems. In some parts of Indonesia, such as Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, approximately 60% of people consume protein less than the adequacy level. Therefore, this study aimed to identify halal status of edible insects as a forgotten-fringe food to obtain a potential alternative source of protein-rich food in the future. The goal was to cover households with lower-middle income in fulfilling protein requirements, specifically in food-insecure areas. The results showed that six edible insects were identified as a forgotten indigenous protein source. These insects were forgotten majorly due to taste (yuck), allergies, inferior quality, complicated processing methods, and confusion over halal status. However, the identified forgotten foods had the potential to cover the insecurity condition in Gunungkidul. This might help poor households increase protein intake since often those forgotten foods are cheap and hunted freely.
