Abstract

This study examines the sustainability of catfish (Clarias sp.) hatchery farming in Hang Tuah Village, Perhentian Raja Subdistrict, Kampar Regency, Riau, using a quantitative descriptive approach. The research population consisted of 220 catfish farmers, with a sample of 69 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The results indicate an average production of 66,188 fingerlings per cycle, generating an average revenue of IDR 7,942,609 and production costs of IDR 4,664,077, resulting in a net income of IDR 3,258,532. These findings demonstrate that catfish hatchery farming is profitable and has strong development potential. Labor elasticity was estimated at 4.15, meaning a 1% increase in labor input could raise output by approximately 4.15%, highlighting the labor-intensive nature of the business. However, labor productivity slightly declined from 91,668 to 83,668 fingerlings per worker, as labor growth outpaced production growth. Overall, the sustainability index reached 72.91, classified as moderately sustainable. Strengthening marketing strategies, enhancing community training, and adopting climate adaptation measures are essential to ensure long-term sustainability and optimize economic benefits for local communities.

Abstract

Increased greenhouse gas emissions have led to climate change. Indonesia plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 140 million tons of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e) by 2030. One strategy for achieving this goal is to conserve mangrove habitats. However, unsustainable activities continue to jeopardize the survival of these mangroves. The purpose of this study was to investigate the community structure and sediment carbon content of mangrove ecosystems in Sembilang National Park. Data was obtained at three stations using 100-m transects extending inland from the seashore or riverbank. The sediment carbon analysis was carried out utilizing the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method. Excoecaria agallocha had the highest Importance Value Index (IVI) at the Sungai Barong station, followed by Rhizophora apiculata in the Sungai Sanjang and Birik stations. The mangrove ecosystems at the study sites were characterized as moderately dense. The investigation revealed that the carbon store in mangrove sediments was 1294.14 t/ha, with an average of 431.38 t/ha. Mangrove ecosystems must be managed and protected to ensure that they continue to provide ecological and economic advantages. Keywords: carbon stock, climate change, mangrove

Abstract

Research Originality: This study uncovers the unexpected negative impact of long-term external debt on Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves, challenging conventional beliefs about debt stability. Research Objectives: This study provides important—and occasionally surprising—new insights into the dynamics of Indonesia's external debt and its impact on the country's foreign exchange reserves. Research Methods: Using recent time series data from 2013–2024 and the tried-and-true OLS regression method, this study provides a thorough and timely analysis of the relationship between Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves and the structure of its external debt. Empirical Results: The empirical results indicate that long-term debt has a negative impact on foreign exchange reserves, whereas Rupiah and foreign currency-denominated debts have positive effects. Notably, short-term debt shows no significant impact. These findings offer practical guidance for Indonesia’s external debt management, supporting better debt prioritization and enhanced financial resilience. Implications: These novel insights offer valuable guidance for optimizing debt management to strengthen Indonesia’s financial resilience and economic stability. Abstract

River hydrological factors are thought to influence the level of solid waste pollution that occurs in the Ciliwung River, this is one of the problems that causes a decline in river water quality and threatens the health of the surrounding environment. This research aims to analyze the influence of hydrological factors on the condition of solid waste pollution in the river. The research was conducted in April-June and August-November 2021 at five monitoring locations spread across Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, Purwakarta Regency and Bekasi Regency. The analysis used is a linear regression with the river width (X1), water level (X2) and current speed (X3) on solid waste reporting (Y). The analytical equation model obtained from this is Y = 0.0394 – 0.0041 X1 with a coefficient of determination value of 9,33% with a correlation coefficient reaching 30.55%. This research proves that narrow river width can increase the distribution of solid waste. Although hydrological factors influence forest ecosystems, a stronger influence is thought to come from human behavior factors that throw rubbish directly into rivers.

Abstract

Microplastics in the Central Citarum River, Karawang, West Java, originate from anthropogenic activities of people living around the watershed, which is an industrial, agricultural, and densely populated residential area. Microplastics are degraded plastics < 5 mm in size. This study aims to determine the abundance and size of microplastics in the Middle Citarum River, through observation with a microscope. Sampling was conducted at three locations with three observations: February, March, and April 2022. The types of microplastics found were pellets, films, fibers, and fragments. Microplastic particle size < 0.3 mm was the most common size found. The abundance of microplastics in the water of the Middle section of the Citarum River is different at each sampling location. The total number of microplastic particles in all research locations was 4,413 particles. The highest abundance of microplastics in all sampling locations was in densely populated residential areas at 239.7 ± 326.7 particles/m3 , followed by agricultural areas with an abundance of 72.5 ± 63.8 particles/m3 , then the lowest abundance was in industrial areas at 55.6 ± 57.8 particles/m3. The average abundance of microplastics in the middle Citarum River water was 122.6 ± 209.7 particles/m3. Statistical analysis using Kruskall Wallis with a df value of 2 > 0.05 showed no significant difference in microplastic abundance at each research location. All stations had the same potential for microplastic pollution. This study shows that high anthropogenic activities lead to high microplastic pollution in water. Therefore, proper mitigation and management of waste and plastic waste are needed.

Abstract

Abstract The social structure of inland fisheries communities tends to place powerful elites in important positions, while local fishermen are subordinate actors. Patronage is a form of social relationship that describes the unequal social structure between these actors. This research aimed to analyze social structure in the inland waters of South Sumatra in the practice of the Lebak Lebung and River Auction (L3S) in OKI District. To achieve this goal, a constructivist paradigm with qualitative research methods was employed, and the sample comprised 39 informants selected as subjects. The data analysis was conducted in three distinct stages, namely data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the regulation of open access for all parties in the local government regime after 1982 created an institutionalized social relations structure where the government, investors, traders, middlemen, and non-fishing actors dominated compared to the fishermen. The participants in this social landscape strived to accumulate capital to enhance their competitiveness within the L3S domain. A patronage system was implemented with middlemen assuming the role of patron and the fishermen acting as their clients. The current institutional social structure has created an unfair distribution of resource benefits for fishing workers. The novelty theories were found in the working relations of the inland waters community of South Sumatra, namely stratified distribution of rights, dual status, multi-stage patronage, and the positive function of patronage for chief fisherman. Further research should be conducted to research policy revitalization and develop strategic inland water management models. Highlight Research The author mentioned 3 highlights from their results research: Auction system in inland waters in South Sumatra presents an unfair distribution for fishermen. Structure of the working relationship formed is an asymmetric patron-client relationship but with novel theories such as the stratified distribution of rights model, dual status, multi-stage patronage, and the positive function of patronage. An imbalance in local access to auction objects due to their weak ability to accumulate capital.
